A warm welcome to Carlisle Racecourse for one of the most prestigious and historic fixtures in the racing calendar – Carlisle Bell & Cumberland Plate Raceday.
Today promises a thrilling afternoon of flat racing, with eight competitive contests and an impressive £197,000 in prize money on offer The action begins at 2.00pm and builds towards the feature race of the day, the Stablemate by AGMA Carlisle Bell Handicap, which takes centre stage at 4.35pm
Away from the track, there’s plenty to enjoy throughout the afternoon. Flat Cap Brass will be providing entertainment around the racecourse, while Tullie House will be showcasing the original Carlisle Bells beneath the Parade Ring Lawn Marquee – a unique opportunity to get up close to one of sport’s greatest treasures
Few sporting occasions can match the history celebrated here today. The Carlisle Bells date back to 1599, while racing at Swifts is believed to have taken place as early as 1559.
The larger Bell bears the inscription: “The sweftes horse thes bel to tak for mi lade Daker sake”or, in modern English, “The swiftest horse this bell to take for my Lady Dacre’s sake.”
Preserved for more than four centuries as part of the city’s civic silver collection, the Bells are recognised as the world’s oldest sporting trophy still competed for today. This afternoon, another name will be added to their illustrious roll of honour as the latest contenders bid to write their own chapter in racing history. Previous winners dating back to 1960 can be viewed in the Main Entrance.
Also featured on today’s card is The Lady Dacre Bell, named in honour of Lady Dacre, whose name is immortalised on the historic Bell
Formerly known as the Carlisle Bell Consolation, this Class 4 Handicap offers horses who narrowly missed out on a place in the Carlisle Bell another opportunity to compete for success. Now worth £20,000, it has firmly established itself as a feature race in its own right.
My sincere thanks go to our valued sponsors for their continued support:
• Stablemate by AGMA
• Irish Stallion Farms EBF
• Oddschecker
• Spreadex
As part of Racing Staff Week, I would also like to thank everyone working across our industry, racing would not be possible without your dedication and passion.

2025: HOTCASH 3 9 8 Callum Rodriguez 4-1 (Jack Channon) 16 ran Blinkers, Tongue Strap worn by No 9. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No 4, 7.
Running for the first time since Gelding No 5 Stewards Note:
HARSWELLRUBY: Following its run on 13/6/2026 it was reported that the horse became tight for room late-on.
RUNSWICK: Following its run on 12/6/2026 it was reported that the horse hung right in the home straight.
Probable S.P’s: 4-1 Runswick (IRE), 11-2 Geo (IRE), 13-2 Barley (IRE), 17-2 Harswell Ruby (IRE), 9-1 I Can Dance (GB), 11-1 Aqua Bear (IRE), Pepsea (IRE), 12-1 Pension Pot (GB), 16-1 Popeye Doyle (FR), 18-1 Wetsand (IRE), 40-1 Marry The Night (GB)
RUNSWICK resumed progress with his reappearance under his belt when second at Chester recently, feasible to think he would have collected had he of stayed straight under pressure and he’s very much of interest with the possibility of better still to come. Geo and Barley are a similarly in-form pair and they need factoring in too, whilst I Can Dance firmly appeals as the type to do better now handicapping as a 3-y-o.
