WEDNESDAY 26 JUNE

The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2024

WELCOME TO

Welcome to Carlisle Racecourse for our historic Carlisle Bell & Cumberland Plate Raceday.

We have seven thrilling flat races scheduled today with a total prize fund of £188,000 on offer for winning connections. Our first race is due off at 2.05pm, today with the Cumberland Plate at 3.05pm, the Listed Eternal Stakes at 3.55pm and the Carlisle Bell at 4.40pm

In-between races there will be entertainment from The Fat Cats by the Main Entrance plus the opportunity to browse Tullie House’ pop-up museum in the marquee which includes the original bells.

The bells date back as early as 1599, the larger bell has the inscription: ‘The sweftes horse thes bel to tak for mi lade Daker sake’ (The Swiftest horse this bell to take for my lady Dacre’s sake). The second bell, is inscribed: 1599 H.B.M.C In this case, the initials are believed to stand for: Henry Baines, Mayor of Carlisle The bells appear to have survived as part of the council’s collection of civic silver, which has allowed them to be preserved until today - hence being the worlds oldest sporting trophy Witness history today and see who is added to the Carlisle Bell and Cumberland Plate illustrious rolls of honour, previous winners can be reviewed in our Main Entrance dating back to 1960!

A huge thank you to all of our generous sponsors today for their support;

• Family and friends of Alan Jennings

• Tattersalls & EBF Stallions

• Stablemate by AGMA

In aid of Racing Staff Week I’d also like to give a special thank you to all of those who work in the Racing Industry, without these dedicated, passionate individuals our sport would not be possible!

Thank you for supporting us today and I hope to see you again very soon.

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

Last Orders Memorial Restricted Maiden Stakes

The Spirit In The Sky

Alan Jennings was unique, deeply loved by family and friends alike A hard working Scotsman bursting with pride and passion in equal measure. A diamond of a man, a man who would help anybody with anything. He made the time, he made it happen, and above all, he made a staggering amount of friends on his journey, which was sadly cut short just before the sparkling festivities began last year. It’s no secret that Alan would be the one up at the bar treating his pals as the bell rang for last orders in Windermere, where he lived for decades. On a day like today, when a different bell is sounding, it’s perfect that his friends from far and wide, could celebrate in style in memory of him.

They are here in their droves today, from all over Great Britain and Ireland, from Bowness to Belfast (Newry to be precise) and from Clydebank (Alan’s birthplace) to Crosby.

So, we are delighted to introduce the ‘Alan Jennings Last Orders Memorial Restricted Maiden Stakes’, the very first special race on a very special day for Carlisle Racecourse set to open up proceedings at 2-05 It is right and fitting (just like the kilt Alan loved wearing on many an occasion).

He’ll be watching will Al, there’s been many a famous chaser gracing us with their presence here, Red Rum to name but one, but he’ll have a different kind of chaser at those pearly gates in one hand, as proud as punch, and rightly so, looking down as the two year olds blast up the five furlongs.

His friends will be having a blast too, you won’t miss them, there’s almost a hundred ladies and gents here to party like no one’s watching. Well, we’ve got news for you, Alan Jennings will be, as his spirit lives on, and we ’ re all exceedingly lucky to have known this adorable gentleman. A legend.

A huge thank you to Carlisle Racecourse team for their unprecedented support. Alan’s Friends and Family.

A poor turnout for the money, with BOUNTIFUL taken to follow up her Thirsk victory Megalithic looks a winner-in-waiting but faces much quicker conditions here and will be suited by longer trips, similar comments also applying to Shamal Wind.
