WELCOME TO

Welcome to Carlisle Racecourse for our Go North Finals Raceday.

Thank you for supporting us today for our Jump Season Finale in which we are proud to host the Go North Series Chase Finals.

We have six races scheduled with a total prize fund of £130,000 on offer for winning connections Our first race is due off at 14.12pm shortly followed by the three Go North Chase finals, the Veterans Chase and finally an Open National Hunt Flat Race to finish the day at 17.05pm Thank you to all Owners and Trainers who have travelled to support us today.

The Go North series was designed to give connections of mid-range rated horses a crack at decent price money as well as - through the various qualifiers - boosting field sizes on the northern circuit

The iconic names are also something we are really proud of; One Man was a Champion Chaser trained in Cumbria by Gordon Richards as was his fellow flying top-class grey, Monet’s Garden, who was with his son Nicky. The other, is named after the mighty Red Rum, who needs no introduction to jumps fans and we have a bar named in his honour here. He used Carlisle as a launch point for his annual trips to Aintree where he landed an unprecedented three Grand Nationals!

A huge thank you to our sponsors today;

- Mark Nield Wealth Management

- The Phizacklea Family

- The Eloise & Katie Memorial Trust

- Racing Post

BETTING EXPLAINED

Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

In April 2015 the family of Peter Phizacklea O.B.E. surprised him on his 78th Birthday by sponsoring a race in memory of his late wife Pauline, who sadly passed away in 2006.

Peter was awarded the O.B.E. in 2003 for his “Services to Cumbria and The Lake District”.

The Phizacklea family had such a memorable day that they have continued to sponsor a race each year since, (with the exception of the two Covid years). Unfortunately Peter was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2016 ultimately resulting in him now residing at Ostley House care home in Barrow-in-Furness.

Today sees the 8th running of the Pauline Phizacklea Memorial Hurdle in memory of a loving wife, mother & grandmother.

Sadly missed - always in our thoughts

TRENDSETTERS GUIDE

Previous race trends (2014-23) can often help provide a short-list of potential winners in the current year’s races. The percentage figure in brackets after the race details is the favourite’s ‘strike rate’ in the race for the last ten years Trainers who have won the race before are also highlighted if they had an entry at the 5-day declaration stage.

Sunday 7th April

2.12 – 2m 3f+ Novices’ Hurdle (63%): New race in 2015. 7/8 past winners were either 1st/2nd favourites with one surprise (40/1) winner in 2021. 7/8 past winners had finished 4th or better LTO (excluding point to point form). Trainerto watch: S R Crawford (won 2016).

Last year’s winner Going Mobile again holds an entry and is 1lb lower in the handicap ratings – but ifthe horse gets in the race he may well be running ‘out ofthe handicap’ this time.

Trainers to Watch: Sam England (won 2023), S Coltherd (won 2022), Rebecca Menzies (won 2021)

3.22 - 2m 4f Handicap Chase (33%): New race in 2021. All winners to date were 5th or better LTO (10-34 days earlier). Winner’s weights were 10st to 10st 9lbs. Uptown Harry is seeking a repeat win in the race and has the same handicap rating as last year – however as with the previous race, this past-winner may be running ‘out ofthe handicap’ this time.

Trainers To Watch: Jane Walton (won 2023), Sam England (won 2022), Lucinda Russell (won 2021)

3.57 – 3m+ Handicap Chase (33%): New race in 2021. All winners to date were 4th or better LTO. (12-27 days earlier). In the betting two had odds of 15/2 or shorterwith the other a 16/1 shot. All past winners carried a weight of 10st 6lbs to 11st 8lbs. TrainerTo Watch: Sam England (won 2022).

4.32 – 3m+ Veterans’ Handicap Chase: New race in 2024

5.05 – 2m 1fNH Flat Race (62%): New race in 2019 with four previous renewals. All four past winners were either 1st/2nd favourites. Two were making their debuts and the others both had two previous runs, finishing 4th or better LTO (30-58 days earlier). All fourwere aged 5yo.

Caroline Thompson, who lived from 1938 to 2023, had a lifelong passion for horses and racing. When she was young, Caroline used to ride horses and was involved in owning shares in a couple of National Hunt horses. Although she enjoyed all types of racing, it was the National Hunt racing that brought her the greatest joy. The highlight of her year was always The Cheltenham Festival and Aintree.

Caroline joined the Ennerdale Box at Carlisle Racecourse and soon after joined the syndicate, ‘The Spirit Partnership’, which had tremendous success with their first horse, Derriana Spirit, trained by Nicky Richards. Caroline’s love for racing also led her to make some wonderful friends throughout her life in the world of racing.

Thank you to Caroline’s family for the donation of £1,000 to Injured Jockeys Fund in memory of Caroline and her love of horseracing

The presentation of this donation will take place in the parade ring at 14.20pm by Rilla Carr to Jack and Jo Berry from the Injured Jockeys Fund.

To find out how you can become involved and support the Injured Jockeys Fund or make a donation, call 01638 662246 or visit www.ijf.org.uk

ROCCO STORM: Following its run on 12/3/2024 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run.

RITSON: Following its run on 26/3/2024 it was reported that the horse hung left-handed throughout.

ProbableS.P’s: 7-2 Netywell (FR), 11-2 Trac (FR), Travail d’Orfevre (FR), 13-2 Heritier (FR), 8-1 Chase A Fortune (GB), 11-1 Duo d’Enfer (FR), Fia Fuinidh (IRE), 18-1 Ardera Cross (IRE), 22-1 Rocco Storm (IRE), Ritson (IRE)

Plenty hold claims in this Series Final and it could well be worth chancing FIAFUINIDH. He needs to dispel a couple of lesser efforts at Ayr in February but he’s on a workable mark on the pick of his form over fences and this drop back in trip rates a likely plus. Dangers aplenty are headed up by Travail d’Orfevre, Netywell and Trac in a competitive affair

ELVIS MAIL won off this mark at Kelso on his return and can return to winning ways dropped to a veterans’ event for the first time. Two For Gold responded well to a tongue strap when a close second at Ascot 2 weeks ago so is feared most ahead of Ask Me Early, who will find this less demanding than the Midlands National.
