EXPERT VIEW

A quick way to see a horse’s past performance. These are its recent finishing positions.

How the experts rate the horse’s chances:

Look out for Letters: C D CD BF

= Has won at this course = Has won over this distance = Has won over this distance at this course = Was a beaten favourite

MORE INFORMATION ON THE FORM / P F U R CO B S r

= New racing season = Missed racing season = Was pulled-up and didn’t finish the race = Horse fell = Rider unseated = Horse refused to race = The horse was forced out of a race by a loose horse = Horse was brought down = Horse slipped = The horse ran around a jump or took the wrong course in a flat race = Disqualified

d Bold form figures = performance in all-weather (Flat) or Point-to-Point (Jump) races

2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse. 3. Timeform view and TFR rating 4. HORSE’S TRAINER & THEIR LOCATION

Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race. 5. JOCKEYS Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day. OTHER USEFUL DETAILS 6. Owner’s colours worn by the Jockey 7. Saddlecloth number 8. Horse’s name 9. Days since the horse last run 10. Horse’s age 11. Jockey’s weight (stone and Ibs) 12. The horse’s breeding – father (sire) and mother (dam) 13. Horse’s owner 14. Horse’s breeder 15. Birthplace of horse (outside GB) 16. Draw – position of the horse in the starting stalls

BETTING EXPLAINED Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

TRENDSETTERS GUIDE Previous race trends (2014-23) can often help provide a short-list of potential winners in the current year’s races. The percentage figure in brackets after the race details is the favourite’s ‘strike rate’ in the race for the last ten years. Trainers who have won the race before are also highlighted if they had an entry at the 5-day declaration stage.

Monday 5th February 1.32 – 2m 1f Novices’ Hurdle (50%): Due to the weather, this race has been run just six times in the last ten years. The betting market tends to be a good guide for this race with three favourites and two second favourites winning in the last six renewals and all having odds of 5/1 or shorter. Five of the six winners were either 1st/2nd /3rd on their last run with the other 6th LTO. All last ran 27-43 days earlier with 5/6 having run twice before this season. Trainers to Watch: D McCain (won 2017, 2020 & 2023); J Moffatt (won 2014). 2.02 – 2m Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (66%): New race in 2014 but only run six times before, with four races won by the favourites and the others by the second favourite. All six had also finished 1st/2nd /3rd on their last run (18-37 days earlier). 2.32 – 2m 3f+ (Mares) Novices’ Hurdle (50%): Race run six times since 2014. As with the first two races today, the betting market tends to be a good guide for this race with three favourites and two second favourites winning in the last six renewals. All six winners had odds of 6/1 or shorter and were 6th or better on their last run. Brian Hughes has ridden three of the last five winners in this event. Trainer to Watch: D McCain (won 2017 & 2022). 3.02 – 2m 5f (Mares) Handicap Chase (33%): New race in 2020 and run just three times before. All three winners were 4th or better LTO (11-47 days earlier) with odds of 5/1 or shorter. Last year’s winner Lilith again holds an entry and is now 4lbs lower in the handicap ratings. Trainer to Watch: A Honeyball (won 2023). 3.32 – 2m 1f Handicap Hurdle (16%): New race in 2014 but only run six times before. All past winners finished 5th or better on their last completed run (excludes falls etc). Three winners had odds of 9/2 or shorter with the others 10/1, 11/1 & 14/1 shots. Trainers to Watch: M Hammond (won 2023); J Dixon (won 2016). 4.07 – 3m Handicap Chase (33%): New race in 2022 when race divided so three past runnings of this event. Two past winners were 3/1 shots and the other 14/1. All three were aged 8/9yo and had last run 22-51 days earlier. Trainer to Watch: Ann Hamilton (won 2022). 4.40 – 2m 1f NH Flat Race (n/a): New race in 2022. Both winners to date had odds of 3/1 to 7/2. Trainer to Watch: D McCain (won 2022).

TIMEFORM VIEW Put in a good round of jumping when landing this race 12 months ago. Indeed, she’s 4lb lower compared to 12 months ago and the first-time visor/prospect of a soft lead are other factors which could potentially PLAY SMARTER help tilt the scales in her favour. Royale Margaux will be a big threat if reproducing the form of her Cheltenham effort in December and she is feared most ahead of Game On For Glory.
