Race preview from Weatherbys A small but select field go to post for this Graduation Chase, staged over two miles, and all four look to hold solid claims here. Sail Away for the Dan Skelton team must shoulder top weight here but ended last term with an emphatic win in the Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase at Ayr. The seven-year-old made virtually all, jumping with aplomb as he travelled smoothly throughout the contest and ran away a comfortable 11-length winner. The form hasn’t worked out all too well since, but he could not have won more impressively than he did and
One of those speedier types could be Chris Gordon’s Aucunrisque. this son of Martaline looked to be a real progressive novice chaser trending in the right direction. He does drop back in trip significantly here though, from three miles to two miles, and he may not have the gears for this sharp test so could be vulnerable to a speedier type. One of those speedier types could be Chris Gordon’s Aucunrisque, who was one from three over fences last term, the highlight no doubt chasing the smart Boothill home in the Grade 2 Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase, beaten just one length. Although a very accomplished hurdler, a Grade 2 winner over the smaller obstacles and the winner of last season’s Betfair Hurdle from a mark of 138, his form over fences has been consistently boosted; he got the better of Jetoile on debut in his only victory, Ryan Potter’s WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW
gelding going on to win the Old Roan this term, whilst Boothill has gone on to bolt up in a handicap from a lofty mark of 149. Back over fences here, Chris Gordon’s seven-year-old sets a high standard. Nicky Richards’ Nells Son is himself a Grade 2 winner over hurdles, landing the Premier Novices’ Hurdle at Kelso back in 2022 before finishing a gallant fourth in the Grade 1 Mersey Novices’ Hurdle at the Grand National meeting at Aintree. The eight-year-old got off the mark over fences belatedly last time out at Carlisle, travelling strongly through the contest up against some promising novices before putting in a great jump at the last to win his race. That was from a mark of just 130 and he has a little bit to find on ratings with Aucunrisque, but he will relish the soft underfoot conditions and still has plenty of scope for improvement over fences. It could look to be a smart bit of placement from John Queally for his Irish raider The Banger Doyle, who has been kept busy all throughout the summer and was last seen finishing fourth on the flat at Thurles. He finished third in a Grade 3 novice chase at Roscommon in his last race in this sphere, and although well beaten that day, may find this a little easier receiving weight off two of these. He was staying on at the line that day though, and chased home Gordon Elliott’s Salvador Ziggy over an extended trip before this, so perhaps may want a little further than this two mile trip.
