BETTING EXPLAINED

Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

The following declaration was made in the CUMBERLAND NEWS on the 3rd of July 1987 by locally-based commentator; Sporting Life journalist; radio broadcaster; former schoolteacher, and Border TV presenter (yes, a jack of all trades, but MASTER of all!) the legendary JOHN BASIL BUDDEN.

He had witnessed the pillar-to-post Carlisle success of a two-yearold called HINARI VIDEO ,and jockey Bobby Elliott – a stunning performance to provide a 27-year-old Glasgow University, graduate (born in Bellshill, and brought up in East Kilbride) with a first winner as a handler of horses.

JBB stated emphatically: “ Carlisle racecourse have certainly not seen the last of MARK JOHNSTON. Already a fully qualified vet, the astute SCOT now intends to make a serious impact in his adopted role as a professional trainer!

Wow! Talk about hitting the nail on the head!

Sadly, ever popular JOHN, who made Newbiggin (Castle Carrock) his home way back in the 1960s, passed away last August, aged 83. (How he would have loved to be here today!)

That forecast proved spot-on, because today Carlisle racecourse pays tribute to what happened 36 years and 12 days ago at the Blackwell Road track.

Records have fallen like ninepins for the Kingsley Park team, now “officially“underthesupervisionofsonCharlie(thoughMarkremainsfully involved).

Richard Hannon, seniors‘s 4,193 total was eclipsed in 2018; then Mark smashed through the 5,000-winner barrier, and, as I write this article, the JOHNSTON winner total has marched on to 5,140.

NEXTTARGET::6,000,andattheircurrentstrikerate,they“couldbethere” by 2027! Congratulations to the JOHNSTON tribe on an unbelievably fantastic record-shattering performance!

WILL LEFEBVE, Ferring-by-Sea, West Sussex……and by the way, I was here on the 1st of July, 1987!

TRENDSETTERS GUIDE

Previous race trends (2013-22) can often help provide a short-list of potential winners in the current year’s races. The percentage figure after the race details is the favourite’s ‘strike rate’ in the race for the last ten years. Trainers who have won the race before are also highlighted if they had an entry at the final declaration stage Drawfacts comments show the past record of winning stalls in the race – stalls divided as low-middle-high.

Thursday 13th July

2.15 - 1m 3f+ Handicap – Fav 0%: New race in 2019 with all three winners finishing 5th or better LTO. In the betting, the winners odds ranged from 5/1 to 8/1. Drawfacts: No advantage seen.

Trainer to watch: I Jardine (won 2021)

2.50 – 6fHandicap – Fav 56%: New race in 2017 but run as two divisions some years. The last six winners had all raced in the last 14 days with all but one of them finishing 5th or better last time. 6/7 winners had odds of 8/1 or shorter 4/7 winners were ridden by an apprentice jockey

Drawfacts: Low 42%; Middle 29%; High 29% Trainer to watch: P Midgley (won 2019).

3.25 – 6f(Fillies) Handicap – Fav 35%: New race in 2015. 6/7 winners had last run 7-20 days earlier and 5/7 winners finished 6th or better last time. 3yo have won 5/7 races with the others won by 5yo horses. In the betting 5/7 winners had odds of 11/2 or shorter Drawfacts: Low 42%; Middle 29%; High 29%. Trainer to watch: K Burke (won 2018).

4.00 – 7fMaiden for 2yo Fillies – Fav 50%: New race in 2017 with 4/5 winners having odds of 9/2 or shorter The last two winners were debutantes with all others finishing 5th or better on their last run.

Drawfacts: Low 40%; Middle 40%; High 20%. Trainers to watch: K Burke (won 2018 & 2022), C & M Johnston (won 2017)

4.35 – 7fMaiden Handicap – Fav 0%: New race in 2019 None of the three past winners were better than 5th on their last run. Two had odds of 6/1 and the other was a 20/1 shot. Drawfacts: Low 33%; Middle 67%.

5.10 – 1m 1fHandicap – Fav 50%: New race in 2021 with both winners to date having finished 3rd or better last time. Jewel Maker won the race last year and is now 1lb lower in the ratings.

TREMENDOUS TIMES: Following its run on 24/6/2023 it was reported that the horse ran too free early on.

Probable S.P’s: 10-3 Strangerontheshore (GB), 4-1 Jewel Maker (IRE), Camusdarach (IRE), 11-2 Dandy’s Angel (IRE), 15-2 Distinction (IRE), 17-2 Tremendous Times (GB), 12-1 Forever Proud (GB)

Successful in this race from a 5lb higher mark 12 months ago, JEWEL MAKER can probably have his run in the Cumberland Plate here last month overlooked and, having previously highlighted he’s coming to the boil, Tim Easterby’s 8-y-o could well be ready to strike back at this more suitable trip Strangerontheshore and Forever Proud, who looks worth a try at this longer trip, head up the dangers.
