WEDNESDAY 28 JUNE
World’s Oldest Sporting Trophy OFFICIAL RACECARD £3.50
BELL & PLATE DAY
The

A Warm Welcome to Carlisle Racecourse for our Bell & Plate Raceday!

What a pleasure it is to welcome you back to the racecourse this afternoon for our feature flat meeting There is so much to look forward to today from the FB Pocket Orchestra providing some musical entertainment, a town crier adding a bit of history alongside the original Bells and finally our ROR Equine Ambassador Duke of Navan who will be parading at 1.30pm in the parade ring. Following this our raceday tipster will be providing some top tips ahead of racing so make sure you take some notes!

We have seven fantastic races today with over £163k of prize money on offer Our first race is due off at 2.20pm with our first feature race of the day, the Carlisle Bell, scheduled for 3.50pm The race was first contested all the way back in 1599, with the two bells given out as a prize dating even further back to 1559. It doesn’t get more prestigious than that and to top it off we have a town crier on site ready to declare the result! Our next feature of the day is the Cumberland Plate shortly followed by the Listed Eternal Stakes. You can see the Roll of Honour for the Bell & Plate races in our Main Entrance dating back to 1960, we cannot wait to see who will be added to the list and written in the history books this year.

A huge thank you to our sponsors who have kindly sponsored races across the card today:

• AGMA Ltd.

• The European Breeders Fund

• Mark Nield Wealth Management

• Story Homes

In aid of Racing Staff Week I’d also like to give a special thank you to all of those who work in the Racing Industry, without these hard-working, passionate individuals our sport would not be possible!

Looking ahead our next fixture, on Saturday 8th July, is the Great Community Raceday kindly sponsored by local company OEE Container Technology Ltd. who are raising funds for six Cumbrian charities; BEE UNIQUE, Calvert Trust Lake District, Diff-Ability, Every Life Matters, Eden Animal Rescue and The Great North Air Ambulance Service After racing there will be a live DJ set from Faithless so make sure you join us for what is set to be a fantastic evening!

Thank you again for supporting us today and I hope to see you all again soon

With best wishes,

PLAY SMARTER

Plenty are in with a shout but one of the most appealing is ALBEGREY, who ran out a five-length winner over C&D on his recent return and gets in under a 5lb penalty here. Fellow C&D scorer What’s The Story is a big threat on the back of a good York third in a much stronger race, although dual winner of this event Jackhammer and ready Wetherby scorer Clear Angel need factoring in too.

Worlds Oldest Sporting Trophy

Horse racing has been a popular activity in Britain for many centuries, the first properly recorded races date from the 16th century. During this period, silver bells were common racehorse prizes, along with bridles, plates’ and purses of money.

The larger bell, has the inscription:

‘The sweftes horse thes bel to tak for mi lade Daker sake’ (The Swiftest horse this bell to take for my lady Dacre’s sake).

The second bell, is inscribed: 1599 H.B.M.C. In this case, the initials are believed to stand for:

Henry Baines, Mayor of Carlisle

The bells appear to have survived as part of the council’s collection of civic silver, which has allowed them to be preserved until todayhence being the worlds oldest sporting trophy.

The original Bells are proudly on display in the Parade Ring Lawn Marquee

Unsurprisinglyclaims can be made formost andwiththat in mind a chance istaken onVACCINE. He ran well when placed in a pair of Pontefract handicaps during the spring and any further easing of the ground will hold no fears on the back of a short break. Platinum Girl, a good winner over C&D recently, heads the dangers. Gometra Ginty who has landed this race for each of the last 2 years and Iris Dancer are next best.
