MONDAY 20TH FEBRUARY Trendsetters Guide Previous race trends (2013-22) can often help provide a shortlist of potential winners in the current year’s races. Hopefully these brief pointers will assist racegoers at Carlisle today. The figure in brackets after the race details is the favourite’s strike rate for the race Trainers who have won the race before and have an intended runner at the final declaration stage are also highlighted.
1.15 2m 1f Maiden Hurdle (67%): New race in 2020 All winners to date were either 1st/2nd favourites with all three ridden by Brian Hughes. Trainer to watch: D McCain (won 2021 & 2022).
1.45 - 2m 3f+ Novices’ Hurdle (44%): All winners last ran 16-69 days earlier with the last eight winners all finishing either 1st/2nd on at least one of their last two runs. 7/9 winners since 2013 had odds of 9/2 or shorter Trainers to Watch: J O’Neill (won 2021), T Easterby (won 2020) & D McCain (won 2015).
2.15 2m 4f Handicap Chase (31%): The last eight winners all finished 6th or better on their last completed run. Longest winner’s odds seen since 2013 were 18/1 although 7/8 winners had odds of 9/1 or shorter Knocknamona won the race in 2019 and is now 10lbs lower in the ratings.
Trainers To Watch: M Hammond (won 2019).
2.45 - 2m 1f Handicap Hurdle (27%): 10/11 past winners were rested at least 17 days before winning here. In addition, 10/11 had also finished 6th or better on their last completed race In the betting the longest winner’s odds were 20/1 with 8/11 having odds of 11/2 or shorter
Trainers To Watch: D Sayer (Won 2020) & D McCain (won 2016).
3.15 – 3m+ Handicap Chase (50%): New race in 2015. 6/7 winners to date had odds of 11/2 or shorter Also, 6/7 winners carried a weight of 11st 7lbs or more.
3.50 – 2m 3f+ Handicap Hurdle (22%): 8/9 past winners had odds of 6/1 or shorter (other was 9/1). 7/9 winners had won either of their last two races. Captain Zebo again holds an entry having won the race in 2020 when rated 130 (now rated 126). Trainers to watch: D Skelton (won 2022) & J E Dixon (won 2020 & 2016).

4.25 – 3m 1f Handicap Hurdle (n/a): New race in 2021.
2023 Carlisle Race Facts #1: There are two horses travelling from Ireland today and hopefully they will both run well. However, race goers should be aware that if they had backed all 52 Irish trained runners (in jumps races) here since January 2019, with a £1 win stake, they would be showing a loss of £35.85!
