THE WEATHERBYS NHSTALLIONS.CO.UK GRADUATION CHASE Although it is slightly disappointing that two of the novices from the original five-day entries – namely Aucunrisque and the high-class hurdler Monmiral – weren’t declared for today’s feature, we still have an exciting quintet to face the starter for the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Graduation Chase. Tommy’s Oscar was himself a very smart hurdler and after a trio of handicap victories last winter, completed the four-timer in Grade 2 company at Haydock. Whilst he was unable to make his presence felt in the Champion Hurdle, he bounced back to form with a gutsy display on chase debut, when successful over course-and-distance last month. He was conceding plenty of weight to a race-fit rival on that occasion and ought to strip a whole lot fitter this afternoon. Ann Hamilton’s stable-star won’t mind the soft ground and in receipt of weight from his four rivals, is likely to take plenty of beating. The same connections won this race five years ago with the recently-retired Nuts Well and it would appear to be a big day for jockey Danny McMenamin, who partners another Grade 2 winning hurdler, Nells Son, in the novices’ handicap chase. Emma Lavelle opted to give Friday’s Haldon Gold Cup a miss with Red Rookie and that decision is likely to be vindicated, as the chestnut is sure to revel in the prevailing conditions. A three-time winner on heavy ground, he didn’t get to face his optimum conditions in four starts as a novice chaser last season and as a result, could be capable of marked improvement. Currently the lowest-rated of the quintet, it would not be a surprise to see him run a big race and he has gone well when fresh in the past. The other trio are more experienced chasers and in fact, Cheddleton finished third in this very race 12 months ago. A course-and-distance winner at the second attempt over fences (November 2020), he is another mud-lover and was far too strong for Cornerstone Lad in a heavy ground novices’ chase at Haydock the following month. He hasn’t won over fences since – which is why he still qualifies to run in this race – and you would imagine that this has been his early-season target for some time. Interestingly, trainer Jennie Candlish runs another nice young prospect earlier on the card, in the shape of bumper winner (won at this course in October last year) Basford, who runs in the opening maiden hurdle. Cornerstone Lad, who wears his customary cheek-pieces, hasn’t reached the same level as a chaser as he was a hurdler, whilst Malystic hails from the family of the smart dual-purpose performer Clever Cookie and has himself developed into a flag-bearer for trainer Peter Niven. He should be sharper for his recent Kelso second and has won on second start in each of the past two seasons. More is required at this level, but he ought to run his race and is another with winning form on soft ground. Best of luck to the connections of all five runners.

The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Carlisle Racecourse. The emergency exits on the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Carlisle Racecourse employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualiﬁed paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that ﬂash photography is not permitted as the ﬂash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.
