EVENT DIRECTOR’S FOREWORD
Welcome to Burgham International Horse Trials 2024, supported by Project Pony!
It is very gratifying that we have once again received a huge amount of entries. This has meant extending the timetable again - and I cannot fully express my gratitude towards everyone who has made this possible. The support that riders and owners show Burgham is the best possible reward for the hard work put in by the Burgham committee, our fantastic volunteers and officials in past years. We have a great team and I cannot thank them enough.
Perhaps most importantly, I must give a huge thank you to our wonderful landowners, the Hogg family - they are so supportive and are involved in numerous ways, before, during and after Burgham.
We would not be able to run Burgham without the support of our partners, especially Project Pony. Project Pony is known for supporting and nurturing young talent amongst the pony ranks of British Eventing, identifying and supporting up-and-coming young riders by giving them the opportunity to compete on elite event ponies. The organisation aims to maintain a group of established event ponies, each loaned out to individual riders who might not otherwise have access to ponies of this calibre to participate in the sport at the highest levels.
We are also very grateful to our CCI4*-S sponsors Holme Dodsworth Metals, to Hambro Sport Horses for their sponsorship of the CCI3*-S sections, to N.I.S Group Services Ltd for supporting the CCI2*-S class, to Blackshaws Garage - our official vehicle suppliers - and to all of our national class and fence sponsors.
This year, following the sad cancellation of Belsay due to bad weather, Burgham is the middle leg of the hotly contested and highly valuable Northumberland Challenge, which will conclude this time at Belsay 2025. Thank you to Hambro Sport Horses and to N.I.S Group Services Ltd for sponsoring the CCI3*-S and CCI2*-S challenges, while InXpress Tyne & Wear and Equestrian Eye take joint sponsorship of the new BE100 challenge.
I must give a special mention to the Event Horse Owners’ Association, who have helped us provide the owners’ facility at the ringside. They do a superb job of supporting the sport and our all-important owners.
We wish all owners and riders the best of luck over the weekend and hope that you all enjoy a great weekend of sport.
Craig Anderson Event Director
Project Pony is an initiative which aims to identify and support up and coming young riders with a realistic ambition of competing at the top level, in particular by giving them the chance to ride elite eventing ponies.
Project Pony was born from the love of this thrilling and exhilarating sport and the desire is to give a little back by opening the door to young, determined athletes who might not otherwise get the opportunities their ability deserves. In short, Project Pony is all about giving talent a chance in the sport of eventing.
With some very exciting ponies and riders already in our team, and a number of new plans in the pipeline, we would be delighted to discuss with individuals, owners and businesses how they too could become involved.

DUBARRY BURGHLEY YOUNG EVENT HORSE EXPLAINED
The aim of the Burghley Young Event Horse Series is to encourage riders, trainers and breeders to produce and present the type of young horse which potentially has the attributes needed to develop into a world-class three-day event horse. Horses eligible to compete in the 2024 Burghley Young Event Horse Series are based on year of birth: 4 year olds -foaled in 2020; 5 year olds - foaled in 2019.
Judging
Judges are looking for potential for the future; an athletic, loose moving horse with a promising jumping technique and attitude, which, with effective training will develop physically and mentally into a world class event horse. The winner of the class is that with the highest overall combined mark from four sections:
Dressage Phase
(35 marks)
Unlike a normal dressage test, judges are not assessing the current state of training and marks are not given for individual movements. Judges will have to weigh up the influence of the rider; a good rider may present a well-balanced, smooth test from perhaps a moderate, unscopey horse whereas a less skilled rider may not make a good horse’s attributes obvious However, judges are reminded that it is the horse and not the rider’s attributes being evaluated.
The idea is to find horses with three correct, scopey and regular gaits, whilst considering the attributes for potential longevity and performance as a world class event horse
Jumping Phase
(40 marks)
Judges are looking for a bold athletic horse with good technique A horse with these qualities, should not necessarily be penalised for knocking down one fence (or a four-year-old having one refusal), providing they demonstrate they react positively afterwards Especially in the early part of the season, four-year-olds may find it easier to jump some fences out of trot. Notwithstanding; 3 cumulative refusals or a fall of horse or rider must result in elimination.
Potential to lengthen stride
(5 marks)
Immediately after the jumping horses are required to show lengthening of strides in canter, the judges are looking for the qualities in a horse’s potential to gallop in the future, with further maturity and development in their training
Suitability & Type
(20 marks)
Judges are looking for horses with the attributes to withstand the demands of the sport in terms of soundness, speed and stamina. Lack of quality and other defects which might indicate limited stamina or speed should be penalised, even though the horse may be a nice dressage or show jumping prospect. However, a lack of size should not be held against him/her.
Qualifiers
One horse per12 starters at today’s event will qualify for the Dubarry BurghleyYoung Event Horse Final at Burghley Horse Trials on Friday 6th September.

COURSE-DESIGNER’S NOTES
The list of horses and riders entered for Burgham this year is very impressive and exciting. I hope the riders enjoy my cross-country courses and that spectators enjoy watching so many fantastic horses and competitors tackling them. Good luck, keep your thinking caps on and have fun! The CCI4*-S track starts with three straightforward, inviting fences on a bit of an uphill pull -1, the British Eventing Starter, 2, the big Houghton Country Tack Box, which is 180cm wide at the top and 120cm high; maximum dimensions, and 3, the Cook & Barker Stick Pile. A good gallop at the beginning to open them up and settle them down ready for the first question at 4abc, the Cussins Homes First Test, which consists of angled house to angled house to a smaller cottage: which angle will they take? This will get horses and riders thinking to find a line that suits and in tune with each other before they tackle the more challenging parts of the course. After opening up over the Event Horse Owners Association Palisade Ditch at 5, they gallop on to
By David Evans
the turning question at the Holme Dodsworth Metals Question at 6abc, a maximum log pile to a brush left-hand corner. I hope the previous question sets them up for this, which asks them to take a left-handed corner to a choice of corners. I think most will jump the left to left, but we will see. This combination and it tests accuracy and boldness.
Next are two imposing but uncomplicated fences: 7, the Castle House Saddlery Parallel Rails and 8, the Acousteel Triple Bar. The next combination at 9abc, the Blackshaws “Off-Road Challenge” is one of my favourites and consists of two narrow fences placed on hillocks and then finally a corner. It’s a key question - but it must feel so good riding up and down the small humps and being in mid-air. When the competitors get it right it must bring a smile to their faces.
Now they can take a breath and kick on over the Equine Products Oxer and back over the Encon Technical Solutions Trakehner at 10 and 11 and then throttle back and balance for the Silvermoor Slide at 12ab. I love this part of the track, which
Harry Meade and Away Cruising
runs through a beautiful, untouched valley.
The Stablewood Coastal Cottage With A View log at 13 sets horses and riders up for an intense section with two water questions - at 14, the Newton Hall “Go For A Dip” this year we just jump into water, landing in the water, and at 15abcd, the AW Jenkinson Lakeside, I have slightly revamped what they have to do. It’s then back towards the second water over a big-looking brush oxer right-handed to a shoulder brush on the edge of the water, then over a brush nose in the water to another brush shoulder. To some it will look like a gymnastic exercise; to some, if they over-jump any element will they run out at the next, and should make great viewing for spectators.
After negotiating all that, competitors gallop away uphill and over the GAIN Feed Table at 16. Then it’s an iconic Burgham fence, 17, the Alnorthumbria Sit & Kick - a real flier over a ditch and brush that must feel fantastic to jump. Be brave!
The last water complex at 18abc - the Project Pony Splash - has a big fence to bring them to the
water’s edge, where they must choose left or right brushes into the water. Once in the water, they turn left to an imposing brush corner. Lots to watch here; it needs clever and determined riding. Then we disappear through the hedge line for a gallop up the hill and to the final combination, the Voltaire Design Challenge at 19abc - a brush nose to a bold hedge to a brush nose. It’s a good accuracy question for which riders must conserve enough energy and keep their horses’ minds on the job before they cross the lane to the last fence, the Howick Hall Garden, at 20.
I think the track has some differences to that of last year, and it is a little bit longer, too. It should prepare horses for their autumn three-day events, educate the younger ones and reward good riding - I hope the riders think so when they gallop across the finishing line!
Good luck, everyone.
We are missing a few competitors that would be normally here, so we send the best of luck to them in their various teams in Paris.
Aaron Millar and KEC Deakon
