A very warm welcome to the Dante Festival for Boodles Yorkshire Cup day.
York Racecourse is committed to supporting the sport and to attracting the best horses to race for us all to enjoy. As an indication of this commitment, prize money over the three days of the Dante Festival is £1.425m, representing a six-figure increase on last year, with every race worth £25,000 or more. All eight of the Pattern grade contests see an increase on their 2022 values, so putting them at record levels. With impressive winners from the first two days now looking to emulate the outstanding seasons of the remarkable crop of 2022 victors, Highfield Princess, Emily Upjohn and Desert Crown, we look forward to seeing who will claim the crown of Stradivarius in the “Cup” division.
With a record £445,000 in prize money on offer for today’s seven race card, we are set to see some wonderful horses in the Group Two Boodles Yorkshire Cup
As the picture for Epsom perhaps has become clearer after Soul Sister won the Tattersalls Musidora and The Foxes The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante; attention today switches to the stayers. We are delighted to host leg one of the QIPCO British Champions Series for this division, which will take in the “Cup” races at all the major racing festivals in the months ahead, including the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, back here at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.
More of those quality thoroughbreds will go to post in today’s seven races, headlined by those star stayers in our feature contest. The likes of Quickthorn have proven form on the Knavesmire after the Hughie Morrison trained runner stormed to victory in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, last August. Some young pretenders have emerged, including Eldar Eldarov who gave Roger Varian a Classic triumph in the St Leger of 2022. It will be fascinating to see them all in opposition.
Notebooks or iPad to the ready wherever you look today as some highly regarded fillies undertake the Clipper EBF Marygate Stakes and Oaks Farm Stables Stakes, a pair of Listed contests. What’s more, a new race to our calendar, a novice affair backed by both Darley and the EBF could well highlight a rising star
This can only be achieved through the support of racegoers and of course our sponsors. Many thanks to Boodles, Knights Solicitors, Oaks Farm, Yorkshire Equine Practice, Darley, Horse Racing Ireland and the European Breeders’ Fund, for their valuable backing.
The team have been busy preparing for your return, the Flying Frankie serving Theakstons Ebor IPA is a new destination on the John Carr Terrace, whilst on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand the renamed York Kitchen and Café serves a range of home-made goodies, including deep-filled Yorkshire Puddings. If the weather plays its part, then the County Stand Garden offers both fresh air and a fresh perspective of the racecourse
Equine ambassador to the Knavesmire, Remy (aka Goldream when successful on the track), is back with us; do go and say hello to him and the team from New Beginnings.
This week Racing Welfare are leading the sport through Mental Health Awareness Week, we are proud to play our part. The new “sunflower” benches spread around the course offer a chance for a quiet moment of reflection.
Finally a word for our hardworking groundsteam, who collect their RCA Flat Team of the Year Award, after the first race, please show your appreciation.
I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there disabled and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.
Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

YESTERDAYS RACING CTION
THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI MIDDLETON STAKES (GROUP 2)
Frankie’s fine final season continued as Free Wind held off the persistent challenge of Rogue Millennium to give Clarehaven a fourth win in the race.
Aristia was second in this race last year after leading and Sean Levey set out with the same plan in mind He set a sedate gallop for most of the race with quite a few of those in behind giving their jockeys a hard time in the saddle.
Stay Alert was perhaps the keenest of all under Oisin Murphy and expended valuable energy in the first half of the race. Favourite Free Wind settled nicely in the back half of the field and was tracked by eventual second Rogue Millennium.
Despite setting slow fractions, Aristia was first off the bridle and began to slip back through the field. Poptronic briefly took up the running but was quickly tackled on her outside by Free Wind and Frankie.
Stay Alert looked to be coming with a nice challenge on the inside but those early exertions took their toll, and she was unable to sustain her effort
Free Wind was rousted by Frankie to take it up but was tracked into race by the smooth travelling Rogue Millennium and Jack Mitchell.
The pair of them put a few lengths between them and the field and it quickly became a two-horse race. Tom Clover’s four-year-old looked to be a real danger but Frankie had left a bit in reserve and Free Wind pulled out a little extra to win going away inside the final 50 yards.
Owner George Strawbridge, on a rare visit over from the U.S, will be delighted that the supplementary entry proved rewarding.
THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI DANTE STAKES (GROUP 2)
A vintage renewal of The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes saw The Foxes give Andrew Balding a second win after Bonfire had won back in 2012.
While the Middleton was a slowly run affair, the Dante could not have been more opposite and was run at a ferocious gallop. Liberty Lane took a narrow lead into the first turn under Clifford Lee but a whole host of runners in behind made sure he couldn’t steady things up as they ran down the back straight
Passenger had been subject to a lot of late money for Sir Michael Stoute, who was going in search of a record eighth win, with Richard Kingscote positioned handily on the rail.
Turning for home they all looked to be going well enough apart from a few out the back and it was very much there for the taking. Coming down to the three-furlong marker, Clifford Lee and Liberty Lane still had their noses in front but there were no shortage of challengers queuing up.
The Foxes opted to come down the far side for his challenge and edged his way to the front While Oisin had a smooth passage through the race, Richard Kingscote ended up becoming a Passenger, as he was caught in behind a wall of horses, when looking to be travelling best of all.
The gap ended up appearing, but it was too little too late as the race had sadly passed him by. Instead, it was The Foxes who stayed on gamely to claim the prize and in doing so earnt himself a 9/1 quote with Sky Bet for the Betfred Espom Derby and will bid to follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner Desert Crown.
RESULT 1st Free Wind 6/5F 2nd Rogue Millennium 20/1 3rd Poptronic 25/1
RESULT 1st The Foxes 6/1 2nd White Birch 9/1 3rd Continuous 6/1 14

WHERE CAN I PLACE A B T
There are various points and different ways to bet here at York.
1. Place a bet with the tote. 2.
go to the betting ring. 3.
William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower.
PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER
Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.
COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS
If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times
is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
Non-runner
Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.
Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.
Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Age: 2f
Stalls: Farside
We start with a Listed race over the shortest trip in UK racing, five furlongs. It is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, being the development tier of the four categories; Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1.
This race is for those that are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that the horses sire is registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock breeding in Europe. Strong performers will be watched closely as they progress, previous year’s winners have gone on to win the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Sky Bet Lowther at our own Ebor Festival. This early in their career, your selection comes down to a choice of the two “p”s, pedigree or pin.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Persian Dreamer had over three lengths to spare with Dorothy Lawrence at Newmarket last month but, with that experience under her belt, the latter may well get closer this time However, they both may have their work cut out to stop GOT TO LOVE A GREY, who was a most impressive winner of a novice event at Nottingham on debut and looks an exciting filly for this season. If all goes to plan here, Royal Ascot is likely to be her next target.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Our second Listed race of the day, and remember Listed status gives an indication of the top-drawer potential of the runners. In the spirit of creating opportunities for different types of horse, this race has been planned especially to cater for three-year-old only fillies. Those with top class trophies already in the cupboard shoulder more weight, so Juliet Sierra will feel the 5lb extra from her Group 3 victory at Salisbury.
An in-form jockey could be the best way of spotting the eventual winner, check the stats table

Another competitive Listed race followed our opener but this time it was Kevin Ryan who got on the scoreboard. Fonteyn was slow to get going but made stylish progress through the field to just prevail.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Silver Lady won well on debut at Newmarket and two subsequent winners have already come out of that race, so she has to be respected. However, preference is for STORMY SEA, who showed an impressive turn of foot to put her rivals to the sword last time at Haydock. She is a half-sister to Bay Bridge and, with any amount of improvement to come, she merits plenty of respect. Orchid Bloom is another to note.

The best will be the highest rated horses, Masekela here, so will carry top weight.

Nobel could have more to offer this season and he’s not one to take lightly now entering handicaps off what looks a fair opening mark. Preference, however, is for C&D winner EEETEE, who bounced back to form with a ready success at Haydock last month. The five-year-old looks more than capable of shrugging off a 4lb rise. Lightening Company also returned to winning ways at Pontefract last month and is another of interest for an in-form yard

The Boodles Yorkshire Cup FACT FILE:
Distance
One mile, five furlongs abt 188yds (2,770 metres)
Prize money
£180,000
WHEN DID THE RACE BEGIN? WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
It had been intended to launch a new two mile handicap in 1926, but racing was cancelled because of the General Strike and so it began 12 months later. After the war it became a Conditions race and in 1966 the distance was reduced to one mile and six furlongs. In 1971 it achieved Group 2 status.
The Boodles Yorkshire Cup is the first of the major stayers’ Cup events, what you might term the “Grand Slam”. It pits the established stars against the young pretenders. The status of the race is such that it forms the opening leg of the Long Distance Championship category of the QIPCO British Champions Series.
In this case anyway, as Ardross, winner in 1981 and 1982, was the first thoroughbred to claim two Boodles Yorkshire Cups.
The previous winner, Stradivarius, make history and became only the second back-to-back winner of the race in 2018 and 2019
Stradivarius returned last year to make it a famous hattrick of wins.
Stradivarius
LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE OR EVEN THRICE?
A POT OF GOLD? NOT SO FAST
Incredibly, given Irish success in almost every sphere of modern horse racing, this race has always eluded raiders from the Emerald Isle Southern France pushed Stradivarius all the way in 2019, but apart from that, their best effort in the last decade was from the then Thomas Carmody-trained Royal Diamond who finished third to Glen’s Diamond in 2013. With no Stradivarius, will Broome provide an Irish winner for the roll of honour.

LEADING TRAINERS?
The legendary Cecil Boyd-Rochfort bagged seven victories in a career that spanned four decades – The Scout II (1931), Kingstone (1945), Premonition (1954), Dickens (1960), Sagacity (1962), Raise You Ten (1964), and Apprentice (1965). Saeed bin Suroor and Sir Michael Stoute both have trained five winners, after the latter’s Royal success of Dartmouth in 2017 Clarehaven stables, operated by John & Thady Gosden, has three successes in the race thanks to the great Stradivarius but none of the above are represented today.
LEADING RIDER?
The late Lester Piggott has eight wins
- Pandofell (1961), Aunt Edith (1966), Knockroe (1972), Bruni (1976), Bright Finish (1977), Noble Saint (1980) and Ardross (1981, 1982). Of the current crop Frankie Dettori leads the way with six winners – Arzanni (1991), Kayf Tara (2000), Marienbard (2001), Mamool (2003) & Stradivarius (2018, 2019 & 2022). Ryan Moore could add a fourth win to his name should Broome come home the winner
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Plenty of local winners down the years with both the Peacock and Elsey families making their mark. Middleham-based Harry Peacock and his son Dick both saddled a winner, as did the legendary Malton trainer Captain Charles Elsey, followed later by his son Bill. In more modern times Zindabad landed the spoils for Middleham trainer Mark Johnston in 2002 as did Glen’s Diamond for 3000 man, Richard Fahey in 2013, whilst Clever Cookie kept the Yorkshire end up with victory for Peter Niven.
But there could not be a more local winner than Templestow who took the very first running in 1927, for he carried the colours of Colonel Hugh Stobart, a former Steward at York who lived at nearby Middlethorpe Hall, now a popular resting place for owners and racegoers alike.
Get Shirty for David O’Meara and Tashkan for Brian Ellison carry the Yorkshire flag today.

BIG RACE TRENDS
THE BOODLES YORKSHIRE CUP (GROUP 2) (BRITISH CHAMPIONS SERIES)
PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS
INTRODUCTION
The Boodles Yorkshire Cup, part of the QIPCO British Champions Series, is widely recognised as the first major stayers’ race of the season.
TRAINERS
The victory of Stradivarius twelve months ago gave his trainers John & Thady Gosden a third win in the race but with the retirement of the star-stayer last year, there will be a new name on the roll of honour.
RECENT FORM
Only three of the last ten winners had previously raced twice during the current season suggesting that it is probably best to side with fresher horses here Two of those had made just the one seasonal appearance whilst the other six were making their seasonal debuts in the race. An equally strong trend is that all barring the 2010 winner, Manifest, had been previous winners at least of a Group 3. In fact, Millenary, Sergeant Cecil and Stradivarius (thrice), had already been successful at Group 1 level prior to winning here.
OFFICIAL RATING
In terms of official ratings, the benchmark for winners appears to be 110. The only horse in the last decade to win this race with a rating lower than that was Glen’s Diamond, in 2013, so it seems best to focus our attention on the higher-rated horses.
BETTING
With an average winning SP of just under 5/1 and a record of five winning favourites, it is fair to say that the market has proved an excellent guide in the recent years. Glen’s Diamond caused a shock in 2013 when winning at 25/1 but the other nine winners were all sent off at single-figure prices.
KEY TRENDS
Focus on those towards the head of the betting
Oppose those yet to win a Group race
Oppose runners officially rated less than 110
CONCLUSION
Only one of todays runners is rated below 110 and as such it could be wise to draw a line through Get Shirty, who would need a few to falter. Eldar Eldarov looked a super exciting stayer last year when winning the St Leger but may struggle against some more experienced legs first time up, he also must concede weight all round. Siskany has been a real globe-trotter for connections and makes his first start back on British soil after just being denied at Meydan. The horse who beat him that day was BROOME, who is also the selection. He’s got a wealth of experience and is a proper stayer, who could well put all that knowledge into a winning run.

Distance: 1m 6f
Race Type: Group Two
Prize Money: £180,000
Age: 4+

The race is over the comparatively long distance for a flat race of a mile and three quarters, and like long distance human athletes, the stamina required to win tends to develop with age so this race is for horses aged four and older
Identifying a successful stayer could make for a profitable summer, so maybe visit the paddock to get a closer look before making your selection and then watch all the field closely

KNAVESMIRE TIP
QUICKTHORN (sixth) was well behind Broome (first) when they met in the Dubai Gold Cup in March, but that was the six-year-old’s first run of the season so there is every chance he will improve upon that effort. A progressive stayer throughout last season, including a career-best performance when bolting up in the Lonsdale Cup here, he can bounce back to winning ways. Eldar Eldarov may have disappointed when last seen on British Champions Day, but he was a determined winner of the St Leger before that and promises much as a four-year-old. Giavellotto and Siskany are capable of being in the shake-up as well.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Mostabshir arguably sets the standard based on his impressive Kempton win last year and his fifth in the Craven was also promising. That said, Jim Crowley has chosen KATHAB over him and the son of Dark Angel may struggle to give 6lb and a beating to the selection. William Haggas’ gelding only found one too good on his debut in the Wood Ditton last month and he is fully entitled to improve for that experience. New Business was only a place back in third on that occasion and is another to note, along with Ziryab

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 7f
Race Type: Handicap
Rating: 66-85
Prize Money: £25,000
Age: 3+
Stalls: Farside
This handicap presents another tricky challenge for the betting public, 3yo+, rated 66-85, distance seven furlongs are your key stats. Top weight is carried by It Just Takes Time
If an apprentice jockey partners a horse they can claim a reduction in weight (called a claim) to balance their relative lack of experience, see how Jonny Peate earns some relief for his the top-weighted mount by claiming 5lb.
Needing some help, look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see how Ataser has both won over course and distance.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Mark Walford’s string have been in excellent form recently and IT JUST TAKES TIME gets the vote to follow up his Thirsk victory from last week. The 5lb penalty is negated by Jonny Peate’s claim and the step back up in trip is unlikely to inconvenience him. Tiempo Star won on his return to action at Chelmsford and may just be the type to kick on after some below-par efforts last season. Titan Rock, No Nay Nicki and Ataser are others worth a place on the shortlist.

“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 90 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar
If judgement of form has failed you so far today, it might be time to resort to a spread bet or just try your favourite colours; perhaps those worn by rising star Oisin Orr, it has been known to pay a dividend in such races. Good luck, we hope you can go into the weekend ahead of the bookies!

KNAVESMIRE TIP
A tentative vote goes to SPARTAN ARROW, who could not have won any easier at Brighton last time out, and an opening mark of 82 could greatly underestimate him on his handicap debut. Runner-up on his last two starts, Winter Crown looks very dangerous off a featherweight, while Rhythm N Hooves arrives on the back of a bloodless success at Chelmsford last month. Last-time-out winners Miss Brazen and Tatterstall are others to note, as well as Just A Spark and Thankuappreciate.

It has always been the case that shorts and t-shirts have been welcome in Grandstand and Paddock. All racegoers are reminded that the removal of shirts is not encouraged and that basic decency and not causing offence to fellow racegoers by clothing choices, is required. York Racecourse reserves the right to refuse or, to require anyone to leave who does not observe the above code.
Drugs
A zero tolerance policy on drug abuse is in force, be warned, North Yorkshire Police and our own team are watching with some canine help, sniffing.
Litter
Racegoers are requested to place all litter in the receptacles provided. If you do not need your racecard please place it in a bin as you leave the racecourse.
Noise
So that the horses have the best chance to perform and so your fellow racegoers have the opportunity to enjoy them please do not cause any distractions; the waving of flags or banners, use of radios or making of sudden noises are examples of things to avoid. Racegoers are reminded of Public Health England advice that shouting increases the risk of the spread of diseases, so to consider wearing your face covering when part of a cheering crowd.
Parade Ring
For safety reasons children under the age of twelve are not permitted into the Parade Ring or Unsaddling Enclosure.
