TATTERSALLS

024 saw Tattersalls achieve levels of turnover and average price never witnessed before. After a slight downturn in 2023 from the previous year, this year’s recordbreaking turnover topped 420 million guineas, comfortably exceeding the previous record in 2022. Likewise, an average price of over 77,000 guineas was a big increase over the previous high. Particular highlights were the 4.8 million guineas fetched by You Got To Me at the December Mares Sale, and the Frankel yearling filly who was purchased as part of Amo Racing’s spending spree at the Book 1 Sale. At the conclusion of the 2024 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented: “Exactly eight weeks ago we reflected on a Tattersalls yearling sale of breathtaking proportions. Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale broke every conceivable record and the momentum from those extraordinary three days has shaped the entire Tattersalls sales season ever since. “Record after record has been broken in the past two months, culminating in a Tattersalls
December Mares Sale which has produced sustained international demand from start to finish and again reached unprecedented heights. It has been a fitting way to end an extraordinary year which at times has left even the most seasoned commentators a little stunned. “The December Mares Sale is an annual barometer for the international thoroughbred breeding industry and the records for turnover, average and median suggest that the appetite for the best European bloodstock is as strong as ever. There are few stages in the world that compare with the unique atmosphere of a packed Tattersalls Sale ring and yet again the elite Sceptre Sessions provided some compelling theatre and memorable highlights. The sale topping 4,800,000 guineas Classic winner You Got To Me is the highest priced filly or mare in the world this year, the outstanding French Group 1 winner Vertical Blue became the highest priced two year old ever sold at public auction in Europe when selling for 3,200,000 guineas and it is the first December Sale to have three

December Mares turnover rose more than 20% year on year to a new record high well over 80 million guineas, average and median both posted wide margin record highs and the combined December Yearlings, Foal and Mares turnover increased by more than 30%. Gains of this magnitude have all contributed to a record Tattersalls annual turnover up more than 20% from last year’s total, but more importantly they have given a massive boost to the British and Irish breeding industries. While we cannot and should not pretend that all in the garden of British racing is rosy, we should nevertheless be proud that our sport and the wider British and Irish breeding industries continue to be held in the very highest esteem internationally and never has this been more apparent than during the 2024 Tattersalls sale season.

IT’S TIME TO GET ON THE OCTOBER RIGHTBOOKS TRACK TATTERSALLS’ 2&3
SUPPLEMENTING FOR BREEDING SUCCESS
T
he extraordinary success of Book 1 was well and truly replicated in Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and far exceeded pre-sale expectations. Turnover and average both reached new heights by considerable margins and the 1,000,000 guineas sale- topping Kameko yearling is the highest price ever for a colt at Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale, but it was the clearance rate above 90% and the sheer volume of horses selling for 200,000 guineas or more that was truly incredible. The demand for quality yearlings from buyers from throughout the world resulted in 93 yearlings selling for 200,000 guineas or more; a number far in excess of any other European yearling sale except Book 1 and a huge increase on the previous Book 2 record of 58. The opening day of Book 2 saw thirteen lots realising 300,000 guineas or more and a top price of 875,000 guineas. The average and turnover were both up on last year’s opening session and the clearance rate was an impressive 90%. The top lot on the opening day was the Staffordstown consigned Sea The Stars colt out of the Listed placed Bighearted who realised 875,000 guineas to Anthony Stroud, bidding on behalf of Godolphin, after a protracted bidding duel with Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown. The February-born colt was bred by Michael Perlman and Sunderland Holding Inc. and is the first foal out of the Listed John Musker Stakes and Listed Prix Charles Laffitte second Bighearted. The daughter of Farhh is out of Bianca Nera, the Irish Champion two-year-old filly, and is a half-sister to the dam of Gr.1 winners Postponed and God Given. The top priced filly on Day 1 was Yeomanstown Stud’s St Mark’s Basilica daughter of the Listed winning Dark Angel mare Angelic Light who realised 600,000 guineas to the bid of Alex Elliott, on behalf of Amo Racing and Al Shaqab. The filly was bred by Yeomanstown Stud, who purchased Angelic Light at the December Mares Sale in 2019 for 165,000 guineas.
Godolphin also secured the Sea The Stars colt out of the Lope De Vega mare Fort Del Oro, who out of Dark Angel mare Angel Fairy for 475,000 was knocked down to MV Magnier. The filly is a guineas. Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale continued The first 1,000,000 guineas yearling colt in the its record-breaking pace on the second day with history of the sale provided a fitting climax to the highest grossing session in the history of the Book 2. Leading the way on the final day was sale and six lots realising 500,000 guineas or the Kameko own-brother to the Gr.1 Summer more. Turnover surpassed 20,000,000 guineas Stakes winner New Century who was knocked for the second consecutive day, the average and down to Anthony Stroud on behalf of Godolphin median both realised double figure increases for 1,000,000 guineas. Avenue Bloodstock’s Mark McStay teamed up with trainer Paddy Twomey to secure the Pinatubo half-brother to dual Listed winner Mrs Gallagher for 220,000 guineas. The son of the first crop sire is out of the mare A Huge Dream and was consigned by Johnny Collins’ Brown Island Stables. A Huge Dream is a half-sister to Xtension, a dual Gr.1 winner in Hong Kong, and to the dams of Champion Sprinter Harry Angel and Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes winner Supremacy. The very last unraced horse offered at public auction by the incomparable Galileo lit up the Craven Breeze Up Sale on Day 2 when selling for 1,000,000 guineas on an electric evening that saw five lots realise 500,000 guineas or more, taking the sale total to a record six. The turnover for the sale was second only to last year’s record-breaking renewal. The sale of the Galileo colt is only the second time seven figures has been breached at the Craven Sale and is the third highest price ever achieved at a European breeze up sale. Bidding for the colt, who had done a spectacular breeze, was initially a head-to-head between Amo Racing’s Kia Joorabchian and KHK Racing’s Chris Wall before Anthony Stroud, bidding on behalf of Godolphin, joined in. Joorabchian was in a determined mood but couldn’t counter Stroud’s bid of 1,000,000 guineas. The colt was sold by Glending Stables and it is the second consecutive year that the consignor has topped the Craven Sale, following the sale of Vandeek for 625,000 guineas last year. Francesca and Charlie Poste, consigning as Station Yard, made a Park Paddocks sales ring debut that may never be matched after their Blue Point colt sold for 800,000 guineas to Anthony Stroud, bidding on behalf of Godolphin. The couple have long sold point-to-pointers, but
last autumn decided to diversify and purchased a draft of yearlings to breeze this year. This colt out of the mare Platinum Coast was part of the bunch, having been purchased for €78,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale. Godolphin also secured the Kingman colt out of the Listed winning mare Pure Excellence for 800,000 guineas after Anthony Stroud saw off the effort of Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown. The half-brother to the Gr.3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes winner Parent’s Prayer was sold by Eddie O’Leary’s Lynn Lodge Stud. Stroud struck again a few lots later when going to 600,000 guineas to secure the Persian King half-brother to the Listed winner Ritournelle. Godolphin, who purchased Champion two-year-old and Irish 2000 Guineas winner Native Trail at this sale in 2021, ended the sale as the leading purchaser, securing four lots for 3,125,000 guineas. Katie Walsh was celebrating again when her Havana Grey filly sold for 525,000 guineas to the bid of Stroud on behalf of KHK Racing. The daughter of Iffraaj mare Lady Macduff was purchased as a yearling by Norman Williamson’s Oak Tree Farm at the Somerville Yearling Sale for 80,000 guineas. The Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale registered 11 lots of 100,000 guineas or more. The top lot was Donovan Bloodstock’s daughter of first-season sire King Of Change who was knocked down to Oliver St Lawrence and trainer Bryan Smart for 180,000 guineas. It was a superb pinhooking result for the young consignor who purchased her for £20,000. Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner and 2000 Guineas runner up King Of Change stands at Michael Orlandi’s Starfield Stud at a fee of just €5,000.

TATTERSALLS’ OCTOBER BOOK 1
THE BLOODSTOCK SALES REVIEW OF 2024 SALES
he Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale has produced the best British two-year-olds of their generation in two of the last three years, as well as two Guineas winners, and the global participation reflected the sale’s reputation as a prolific source of Group 1 performers. The Sale got off to a strong start on the opening day with a son of New Bay topping proceedings at 525,000 guineas and eight lots selling for 200,000 guineas or more. The New Bay colt out of the Galileo mare Alegra was purchased by Anthony Stroud on behalf of Godolphin. The colt was sold by Katie Walsh’s Greenhills Farm who purchased him at Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale last year for 125,000 guineas, where he was part of the Lady Ogden dispersal. Alegra has produced five winners including the Listed winners Pythagoras and Blue Gardenia, and is from the family of Champions Albanova, Alborada and Alpinista. Stroud, who had to withstand the efforts of BBA Ireland’s Michael Donohoe, will be hoping this purchase will be as successful as his 2023 Craven Breeze Up sale topper, the KHK Racing-owned leading British two-year-old of last season Vandeek. Trainer Michael O’Callaghan is a familiar face at the Craven Breeze Up Sale and he struck early for the Mehmas half-brother to last year’s Gr.2 Coventry Stakes winner River Tiber. O’Callaghan saw off the attentions of underbidder Ross Doyle, who was standing with trainer Richard Hannon, to secure the Mocklershill consigned colt for 300,000 guineas. The colt’s dam Transcendence is an unraced daughter of Norwegian Listed winner Cover Girl who is also the grandam of Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes winner Sudirman. It is the family of 1000 Guineas winner Mother Earth and the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes winner Anthem Alexander.
