HOW TO BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER

WAYS TO BET

STRAIGHT EACH WAY

Win only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.

STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

· Fewer than 5 runners – all to win

5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2

· 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3

Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3

· Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

AWAY BETTING

Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE

At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

PLACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS

If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY.

Tel: 01480 499180

In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

16. Jockey’s Name. If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CLASSY TIPS

The following horses are running today in a race at least two grades lower than their previous race:

1.55 CASA NO MENTO (down 4 grades)

2.25 CHUMLEE (down 2 grades)

4.35 ROCK HURLEY (down 2 grades)

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 24th February

BEST SELECTIONS ON THE DAY

With a top-rating of 134 (11lb and upwards ahead of these rivals), CASA NO MENTO is very well treated at these weights and she is fancied to strike on her second chase outing. Cabhfuilfungi only just failed to supplement his Southwell romp at Chepstow and he is likely to be in the shake-up once again, while Throatlash is interesting switching to fences after only two hurdle starts.

WIN: CASA NO MENTO

DANGER: CABHFUILFUNG

Jackpot Cash won over hurdles on his stable debut for James Owen at Southwell recently and must enter calculations switching to fences off a 5lb lower mark, but he has yet to really sparkle in this sphere. Oppositely, NIGHT JET struck on his chasing debut at Leicester last time so he looks the more solid option, lining up off a 6lb higher rating. Grasshopper Time might fare best of the remainder.

WIN: NIGHT JET

DANGER: JACKPOT CASH

Big City Roller has a lengthy absence to overcome but is a fascinating runner on his chasing bow, while Imperial Alex is only 1lb higher than his last winning mark. BALLYBEGG could be the one, though, as Kerry Lee’s horses are in good nick and she’s booked Sam Twiston-Davies in the plate. Her veteran is now 4lb lower than when bolting up at Ludlow last year

WIN: BALLYBEGG

DANGER: BIG CITY ROLLER

Point-to-point winner FORCETORECKONWITH changed hands for 30,000 pounds in November and is related to a few winners. The daughter of Workforce looks to have been found a suitable assignment and could be up to making an instant impression. I’ve Madeupmymind could only manage fourth at Taunton last month, but she might have more to offer on only her third start over hurdles. Of the remainder, Getaways Gift makes the most appeal.

WIN: FORCETORECKONWITH

DANGER: I’VE MADEUPMYMIND

WINCHMORE HILL took a step forward to occupy the runner-up berth at Uttoxeter on his most recent start and has Brian Hughes back on board. The eight-year-old sets the standard with a rating of 110 and he looks the one to beat. French recruit Kingbel Du Lion showed more when third on his second start at Auteuil in March last year and warrants a market check. Count Adhemar can beat Steal The Moves home for third.

WIN: WINCHMORE HILL

DANGER: KINGBEL DU LION

C’EST DIFFERENT has improved since going handicapping, winning a conditional riders’ event at Carlisle before following up at Chepstow on Saturday Sam Thomas’ charge doesn’t escape a penalty this time but the progressive five-year-old is unlikely to have reached the ceiling of his ability just yet The Secret Pearl was keeping on into fourth over 2m1f here latest and the return to further looks a real positive. Rock Hurley is also noted.

WIN: C’EST DIFFERENT

DANGER: THE SECRET PEARL

FARMER JIMMY took a giant leap forward on his handicap bow a fortnight ago, where he won in comfortable fashion over an extended 2m3f at Wetherby. A 4lb rise does not look at all harsh and with a further step up in trip promising to suit, Mark Walford’s charge could double his tally Getaway With You scores highly for consistency and he is unlikely to be far away, while Goguenard, who sports cheekpieces for the first time, ought to relish forecast conditions.

WIN: FARMER JIMMY

DANGER: GETAWAY WITH YOU

Race preview from Weatherbys

It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring the first two races on the cardatBangor-On-Deethisafternoon and a small but select field of five go to post in the opening Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Novices’Chase. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ mare Casa No Mento developed into a smart novice hurdler last term, winning four times in all including an extremely strong Listed event at Punchestown to close the campaign. The seven-year-old shaped as if in need of both the run and the experience when beaten on chasing debut here in November and is worth another chance over fences following a solid run in Grade 2companyoverhurdleslasttime.The othermareinthefield,MissMaverick, should also improve for her chasing debut last time and a return to a lefthandedtrackshouldsuit.

CasaNoMentoisworthanotherchance overfencesfollowingasolidrunin Grade2companyoverhurdleslasttime.

KerryLee’sCabhfuilfungihasperhaps achieved the most of these over fences, an easy wide-margin winner on New Years’ Day at Southwell and three times filling the runner-up spot, ontwoofthoseoccasionsbehindnext time out winners. He is officially rated

123 over fences but must give weight awaytothefieldhereunderapenalty.

Tom Symonds’ Night Jet is likely to be popular in the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Novices’ Handicap Chase on account of his chase debut success at Leicester last time. Winless in 14 starts over hurdles, he took really well to fences on his first crack in reapplied cheekpieces and is open to further improvement with the headgearretained.

JackpotCash was unable to score in three chase starts for Evan Williams but made an emphatic start for his newstablewhenanimpressivewinner back over hurdles for James Owen last week. That was from a mark of 97 and the six-year-old runs here fromareducedmarkof92,soiswellhandicappedifremaininginthesame formoverthelargerobstacles.

Pulled up on his first start over fences at Warwick, Royal Deeside ran a promising race next time when third at Market Rasen in January, travelling well throughout and just weakening after a couple of jumping mistakes late. He has since left Alan King for PatrickMorrisand,onlyafive-year-old, has plenty of scope for improvement over fences. Grasshopper Time has undergone wind surgery and makes his chasing debut here, whilst Eric Carmenhasbeenrunningconsistently well in defeat this term but does find himself3lbsoutofthehandicap.

The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember:

• Take your belongings with you;

• Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.
