A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

SATURDAY 16TH MAY 2026

Good afternoon,

Welcome to Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse for our much-loved Family Fun Day. We have a fantastic day in store for you, including thrilling racing and of course, fun and free activities for families to enjoy.

We have six exciting races on the card today, with two added pony races at the start of the day. This is a fantastic opportunity for young riders to experience riding at our track. The first main race of the day is a 2.10pm. Our feature race of the day, the Bangor-onDee Grand Wynnstay Handicap Steeple Chase comes at 3.55pm. Racing concludes at 5.05pm with the Ladies Day on Saturday 23rd May Novices’ Handicap Steeple Chase.

I’d like to extend my thanks to today’s sponsors; The Wigan Beer Company, Classic Additions and to the family of Kitty Warburton. Your continued support is very much appreciated.

We next race here at Bangor-on-Dee on Saturday 23rd May. Our Ladies Day is set to dazzle with a fantastic best dressed competition, and live music after racing with DJ Toby Anstis. I hope you’ll join us again for another great day of racing and entertainment.

HOW TO BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER

WAYS TO BET

STRAIGHT EACH WAY

Win only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.

STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

· Fewer than 5 runners – all to win

5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2

· 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3

Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3

· Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

AWAY BETTING

Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE

At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

PLACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS

If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY.

Tel: 01480 499180

In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

15. A guide to the horse’s recent form and star rating. Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

16. Jockey’s Name. If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

FANCY THAT

D MCCAIN won the 3.20 race in 2019 and 2023. The stable is represented by CITY OF DIAMONDS in the race today.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 14th May.

BEST SELECTIONS ON THE DAY

Donald McCain trained the winner of this race for three years in a row from 2021 to 2023 and he runs two here with Mr Mojo Risin of most interest after his Kelso fourth following wind surgery SAINT JEANNAIS impressed on debut with an easy Worcester bumper victory before his Ascot fourth and looks a useful recruit to hurdles. He could get off to a flying start under useful claimer Tom Broughton, leaving Magna Patch as another for the shortlist

WIN: SAINT JEANNAIS

DANGER: MR MOJO RISIN

A wide-open contest but one that could go the way of Dan Skelton’s DREAM’S KA, who showed improved form when second at Fakenham earlier this month and has only been put up 2lb by the handicapper Peace In The Park ran well when third at Taunton off this mark and he could run into a place in this company, though Mr Mahler appears the bigger danger returning to hurdles off a potentially favourable mark for a stable in among the winners.

WIN: DREAM’S KA

DANGER: MR MAHLER

The McCain stable traditionally do well here and City Of Diamonds could go well with his most recent win coming off this mark at Musselburgh last November, even if he has struggled in better races since. DIAMONDS GALORE had been frustrating with numerous placed efforts before gaining her first victory at the ninth attempt at Market Rasen last month and she could go on from there now the penny has dropped. Stratford second Fromheretoeternity is the pick for third.

WIN: DIAMONDS GALORE

DANGER: CITY OF DIAMONDS

CALICO has been set tough assignments since landing a double last autumn. Competing off 1lb higher as when successful at Ascot in November, Dan Skelton’s chaser is taken to resume winning ways back at this level. Personal Ambition failed to complete in the Grand Annual in March, but won nicely at Newbury before that and could bounce back. Wetherby winner Sir Tivo goes well fresh and is worth a second look on his return from a lay-off.

WIN: CALICO DANGER: PERSONAL AMBITION

Cahier’s Den finished a close second at Newcastle last time and could shape well again. Slaney Opera returns to this shorter distance with a shout, but SPECIAL JOHN looks worthy of another chance. The latter has won two of his four starts over fences so far and is only 3lb higher than his latest success in December Sam Thomas’ charge remains on a tempting mark judged on last month’s second at Wincanton and he gets the vote.

WIN: SPECIAL JOHN DANGER: CAHIER’S DEN

PARK ANNONCIADE is holding his form well over fences. He returned the convincing winner at Huntingdon prior to another good effort when second at Stratford and a similar effort could suffice in this company Is This For Real makes his chasing bow 3lb higher than when scoring over timber at Huntingdon. He’s another to consider, along with Ice In The Veins, a dual novice winner over hurdles on good ground.

WIN: PARK ANNONCIADE

DANGER: IS

Wise Approach must shoulder a 5lb penalty for his Group 1 success in the Middle Park but still rates the main threat despite his underwhelming reappearance at Ascot, while the highly-regarded Albert Einstein stepped up on his belated comeback when third in the Greenham here and completes the shortlist in what is a very strong listed event.

Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards.

The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember:

• Take your belongings with you;
