HOW TO BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER

WAYS TO BET

STRAIGHT EACH WAY

Win only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.

STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

· Fewer than 5 runners – all to win

5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2

· 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3

Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3

· Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

AWAY BETTING

Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE

At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

PLACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS

If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY.

Tel: 01480 499180

In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

15. A guide to the horse’s recent form and star rating. Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

16. Jockey’s Name. If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

BEST SELECTIONS ON THE DAY

QUEENSWORTHY looked set to mount her challenge when falling three out at Uttoxeter in June and this appeals as an ideal opportunity to gain compensation. Intosomethinggood’s winning run came to an end when runner-up at Market Rasen but he is expected to be thereabouts again, along with Old Bridge, who has been steadily working his way closer to the winner’s enclosure.

TOTEWIN: QUEENSWORTHY

BAIKAL is in good form at present and a 6lb rise for his most recent success at Newton Abbot may not be enough to prevent him from landing the hat-trick over hurdles. Stepping up in trip seems likely to suit Buxted Reel for his in-form stable, while Zamond looks the pick of Donald McCain’s trio with Brian Hughes in the saddle. TOTEWIN: BAIKAL

BUXTED REEL

3 A veteran at the age of 11, NORTHERN BOUND has shown that he retains plenty of ability with his performances over the past year and this appeals as a solid opportunity to notch up his 11th career success. Ben Pauling’s charge is narrowly preferred to recent Stratford winner Magistrato, who drops in grade and has been raised 4lb for that success. Gwennie May Star could improve for wind surgery and cannot be ruled out either

TOTEWIN: NORTHERN BOUND

TOTEEACHWAY: MAGISTRATO

ART OF DIPLOMACY completed a hat-trick in this sphere in July and is just 6lb higher than for that success at Uttoxeter. Mickey Bowen’s nine-year-old struggled on the level a couple of days later, but will prove hard to beat back over fences. Pull Again Green struck at Market Rasen to supplement a Worcester victory and is likely to be thereabouts again off only a 3lb higher rating. Presentandcounting completes the shortlist

MONTICELLO is two from two in handicaps, with both of his victories coming at Uttoxeter, and is now 8lb higher than for his latest triumph. The five-year-old could have more to offer and he remains the one to beat Dreams Fled Away caught the eye when fourth at Stratford before a subsequent spin on the Flat and he is one to be wary of. Guillaume is the pick of the remainder

TOTEWIN: MONTICELLO

TOTEEACHWAY: DREAMS FLED AWAY

Matchless failed to land the four-timer when second at Perth, but that was still a fair effort and he should remain competitive. However, HALIFAX is a C&D winner who bounced back to form when hitting the woodwork at Market Rasen and is just 1lb higher With a similar performance, he could be the one to beat Last-time-out Uttoxeter scorer Supreme Yeats is another to consider

Race Summary:

Plenty in with a squeak but the vote goes to ZAMOND, who couldn’t have gone much closer at Cartmel a fortnight ago and this step back up in trip might be enough for him to snap a losing streak stretching back to December 2022. Buxted Reel has been in good order over the summer and having been freshened up, he heads the dangers. The selection’s stablemate Jipekaa Machin can edge out stable-switcher Crookbarrow for third.

Both all at Weatherbys and I are delightedwiththequalityoffield, despite just seven horses taking their chance in the Class 3 event which rounds off this afternoon’scard.

Imperial Merlin finished runner-up in thesameraceandalthoughthewinner disappointed subsequently, that form was given a boost when King Roly (4th) won over fences at Perth. Grace Harris’ Halifax won this race two years ago, when it was a 0-120 (now 0-130) contest. After 36 starts over hurdles, the son of Saddler Maker is unlikely to be improving but also ran well here in October 2023 and again when runner-up at Market Rasen last month. Conditions should suit and he is aconsistentsort.

The weights are headed by Prince Imperial, who was in good form in the spring.

Supreme Yeats is the oldest runner in the field but arrives here on the back of having won at Uttoxeter, for which he has gone up 5lb. Harry Atkins takes 7lb off Dan Skelton’s nine-year-old, whilst Jennie Candlish’s Matchless also ran well last time, when runner-up over 2m4f at Perth.
