HOW TO BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER
WAYS TO BET
STRAIGHT EACH WAY
Win only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.
STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
· Fewer than 5 runners – all to win
5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2
· 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3
Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3
· Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4
AWAY BETTING
Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)
BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE
At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.
PLACING YOUR BET
Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.
COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS
If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY.
Tel: 01480 499180
In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

15. A guide to the horse’s recent form and star rating. Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
16. Jockey’s Name. If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

BEST SELECTIONS ON THE DAY
Narrowly denied in her bid to land the double at Perth last month, having scored over further there on her penultimate outing, HAPPY INDEX rates the one to beat off 4lb higher with Beau Morgan taking off a valuable 3lb. Runner-up on each of his last three starts over shorter, Lune De La Mer is a key player if seeing out the rise in distance, while Irish raider Tango Theatre arrives on the back of a creditable second at Kilbeggan.
TOTEWIN: HAPPY INDEX
TOTEEACHWAY: LUNE DE LA MER
Placed on her last three starts, including last time out over an extended 2m here behind a subsequent winner, HERJA sets the standard on form and the booking of Brian Hughes looks significant as she aims to get off the mark. Taktique Gagnante hasn’t shown much since joining new connections but stepping up in trip could bring about improvement, whereas Dothejive makes her Rules debut for in-form connections having landed a point-to-point at Stradbally in April.
TOTEWIN: HERJA
TOTEEACHWAY: DOTHEJIVE
3 SHARP GLANCE has made a strong start to her hurdling career and, despite a slight mishap when a beaten favourite at Hexham last month, Alan King’s mare can get back to winning ways. A winner here over fences in May, Barranco must be of interest on his hurdles return, while Guillaume has a chance if bouncing back to the form of his penultimate second at Kelso.
TOTEWIN: SHARP GLANCE
TOTEEACHWAY: BARRANCO
Having supplemented his second here when scoring over C&D last month, LIPA K is one to keep the right side of. A further 3lb rise in the ratings looks workable for the seven-year-old and a seventh career victory may be in the offing. Donnie Azoff finished with a rattle on his latest third at Market Rasen and is a live threat if getting a good pace to aim at Jamie Snowden’s charge is feared most, ahead of the hat-trick seeking Evenwood Sonofagun.
TOTEWIN: LIPA K
TOTEEACHWAY: DONNIE AZOFF
Having stayed on doggedly to complete a double over track and trip 13 days ago, another bold bid is forecast from LAND GIRL’S LUCK. Max Comley’s mare ticks plenty of the right boxes and is fancied to overcome a 5lb rise from the assessor Fellow last-time-out winner G’day Aussie bounced back to form at Worcester last month and, if in the same mood, is likely to be in the mix once more. Mrs Tabitha is the pick of the remainder
TOTEWIN: LAND GIRL’S LUCK
TOTEEACHWAY: G’DAY AUSSIE
Donald Jump is sure to prove popular after posting a close-up third on his debut over C&D last month and isn’t taken lightly. However, GARDE MY GUINNESS also finished third on her opening bid at Stratford in May Jamie Snowden’s mare shaped promisingly behind a subsequent winner and she is slightly more compelling. Way Maker and Elusive Power are both intriguing newcomers and market support for either would be interesting.

Race Summary:
HERJA has yet to finish out of the frame in four hurdles starts, including when runner-up at this course last time out. That form looks solid and she can get off the mark at the expense of Taktique Gagnante who was well-backed on hurdles debut and could improve second time up over the longer trip. Point winner Dothejive is an interesting contender on her first start under Rules and while Pearl Smoke needs to improve on hurdles debut, she does hail from a good yard.

A competitive finale in which SUPREME KING rates just the pick of the weights on the back of a good fifth in a big-field York handicap so edges the vote. Altmore could emerge as the main danger if the fitting of blinkers for the first time ekes out some improvement. Byzantine Empress, Desert Falcon and Sword also need factoring in.
