A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

SATURDAY 20TH APRIL 2024

Good afternoon,

Welcome to Family Day at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse, a day that’s sure to be fun for all the family to enjoy.

The day consists of thrilling racing, fantastic children’s activities, and an exciting visit from our new ROR Equine Ambassador, Sleepy Haven aka ‘Noddy’. We are also delighted to welcome the team from Racing to School who are giving guests the opportunity to give racing a go on an equine simulator. Be sure to head over to the Bangor-on-Dee end Open Course to meet Sleepy Haven and see all we have on offer.

We have seven exciting races on the card today beginning with the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Novices’ Hurdle Race at 1.05pm. At 2.15pm, we see the horses take to the track for the DragonBet Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Steeple Chase with a total prize pot of £12,000 The day draws to a close at 4.35pm with the Nightingale House Hospice Junior National Hunt Flat Race.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank today’s sponsors, Weatherbys, DragonBet, and Camden Stout. All at Bangor-on-Dee are grateful for your continued support.

We next race on the 18th May for Wrexham Day A day to celebrate our local city and all the things that make it special. I hope you’ll join us once again for an enjoyable day of racing at North Wales’ only racecourse.

HOW TO BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER

WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT EACH WAY

Win only

A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.

STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

· Fewer than 5 runners – all to win

5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2

· 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3

Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3

· Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

AWAY BETTING

Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE

At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

PLACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS

If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings.

Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY.

Tel: 01480 499180

In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

16. Jockey’s Name. If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

BEST SELECTIONS ON THE DAY RA

HAITI COULEURS benefited from a drop in class when gaining a first career success at Chepstow last month. The seven-year-old was a cut above the opposition and while this appears to be a tougher assignment on paper, he has plenty in his favour to make it back-to-back victories. Grand Albert won here on his latest start and is respected going up in distance, while the likes of Galassian, Illico De Cotte and Heros De Romay add further spice to the contest

TOTEWIN: HAITI COULEURS

TOTEEACHWAY: GRAND ALBERT

BAMPTON STAR has progressed well for the switch to fences, with victories on both starts at Exeter The handicapper has raised him 8lb for the latest of those but he appears capable of further improvement Le Grand Vert has been running with credit of late and is a key player, with Brian Hughes a notable jockey booking. Dusautior is entitled to step forward from his third at Huntingdon and is capable of a decent showing, as is Nine Nine Nine.

TOTEWIN: BAMPTON STAR

TOTEEACHWAY: LE GRAND VERT RA

GRAIN D’OUDAIRIES went up 10lb following a comfortable success at Market Rasen, when dropped back in trip on just his second start over fences. The return to softer conditions is unlikely to prove an issue because he won on heavy ground over hurdles at Uttoxeter in November Reverting to fences is likely to benefit Charlie’s Glance after his comeback third over timber at Fakenham at the start of the month. Others to note include Fast Buck and Vicki Vale.

TOTEWIN: GRAIN D’OUDAIRIES

RA CE 4

TOTEEACHWAY: CHARLIE’S GLANCE

BALLYCAMUS ran with plenty of credit here over further when second in a higher grade last month, and dropping back in trip on this occasion can see him in his best light. A comfortable winner over this distance at Warwick in January, the seven-year-old is narrowly preferred to the progressive Whodini, who found only one too strong when on a hat-trick at Ayr. Narrowly denied at Carlisle last time out, Grey Skies is likely to appreciate the step up from 2m.

TOTEWIN: BALLYCAMUS

TOTEEACHWAY: WHODINI

BALHAMBAR has improved hand over fist since joining the Harry Derham stable, and a 6lb rise for his recent success at Ludlow may not be enough to prevent him from doubling up. Bucephalus arrives with strong claims following his victory at Newbury in March, which came prior to a defeat on the level, while Camarrate makes his handicap debut on the back of a Fakenham triumph. Third to Sir Gino at Kempton over Christmas before an easy Wetherby victory, Torneo then occupied the runner-berth on his handicap bow and cannot be ruled out either

TOTEWIN: BALHAMBAR

TOTEEACHWAY: BUCEPHALUS

Galunggung took a step forward from his debut over hurdles to justify odds-on favouritism at Hexham and it will be interesting to see how he fares in the market on his handicap bow However, preference is for YEALAND, who struck by half a length at Haydock and has been put up 6lb, but with Luke Scott negating 5lb of that rise, he could be the one to beat again. Malpas completes the shortlist.

TOTEWIN: YEALAND

TOTEEACHWAY: GALUNGGUNG

DOCTOR KILDARE was sent off a warm order when beaten into fourth on his debut at Newbury in January, but he will have learned a great deal from the experience. Nicky Henderson’s four-year-old should have plenty more to offer and he looks the one to beat Mythical Moon failed to fire at Kempton but he has Brian Hughes taking over the reins, which suggests he could take a big leap forward. Any market confidence behind Walk With Charisma would be interesting.

TOTEWIN: DOCTOR KILDARE

TOTEEACHWAY: MYTHICAL MOON

The former, trained by Rebecca Curtis, found Grade 2 company too competitive when a well beaten fourth at Haydock but bounced back emphatically when winning a Chepstow maiden hurdle in a canter last time. Race Summary:

GRAND ALBERT should go on improving now that his stamina is drawn out, so there’s every reason to believe he can defy a penalty. Fellow last-time-out scorer Haiti Couleurs is much respected with some of his earlier form reading well in the context of this race Galassian hasn’t been seen for 18 months but reappears with his yard in good form and also needs considering

There could be more to come from BAMPTON STAR, who is unbeaten in two starts over fences and an 8lb rise for his latest success at Exeter looks manageable given the way he went about his business that day. Race Summary:

CRACKING RHAPSODY was very strong at the finish when landing Kelso’s Morebattle Hurdle and Ewan Whillans’ upwardly-mobile hurdler can make light of an 8lb rise in the weights to complete a hat-trick. County Hurdle runner-up L’Eau du Sud must go well again and heads the list of dangers, while Salsada teed herself up well for this when a resurgent third at Newcastle and is also highly respected. Rubaud and First Street complete the shortlist in this highly competitive handicap

Race Summary:

Jamie Snowden can land another big handicap chase courtesy of GIT MAKER. This 8-y-o bumped into a subsequent Grade 1 winner at Cheltenham and the fact he pulled 18 lengths clear of the reopposing Whacker Clan in third suggests he could be well treated here off only 1lb higher Willie Mullins is going all out for the British title after last weekend’s Grand National success and his unexposed pair Macdermott and Spanish Harlem are very interesting contenders now stepping up markedly in trip.

EVACUATION PROCEDURE

18 Bangor Racecourse has enhanced Safety & Security measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment of the day. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency.

We employ professionally trained and experienced stewards who are located predominantly around the course and are identifiable by their uniform.

In the event of a situation that requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards.

The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember:

• Take your belongings with you;

• Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.
