HURD DAY
A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN SATURDAY 23RD MARCH 2024
Good afternoon,
Welcome to Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse for the DragonBet Premier Hurdle Day. Our first Saturday meeting of the year and a chance to watch some thrilling racing in the beautiful North-Wales countryside.
Today we have six exciting races on the card. The first race is the DragonBet Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Hurdle at 1.30pm. This is our highest value race of the day, and one of the highest value races of the entire season, so its set to be a very competitive race. 2.30pm sees the first of our steeple chase races of the day, the Camden Stout Handicap Steeple Chase, with a prize pot of £15,000 The day draws to a close at 4.15pm with the Broxton Gates Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Race.
As its National Grounds Week this week, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful grounds team who work tirelessly to ensure the best possible racing surface for our runners. I would also like to thank today’s sponsors, DragonBet, Broxton Gates, Camden Stout, and Becks. All of us at Bangor-on-Dee are grateful for your support.
We next race on 20th April for our much-loved Family Day. I hope you’ll join us with your families for a fun day of thrilling racing and exciting children’s activities.

HOW TO BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER
WAYS TO BET
STRAIGHT EACH WAY
Win only
A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.
STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
· Fewer than 5 runners – all to win
5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2
· 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3
Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3
· Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4
AWAY BETTING
Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)
BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE
At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.
PLACING YOUR BET
Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.
COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS
If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY.
Tel: 01480 499180
In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

15. A guide to the horse’s recent form and star rating. Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
16. Jockey’s Name. If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS
BEST SELECTIONS ON THE DAY
PICKANUMBER has won both of his starts in impressive fashion since joining the Olly Murphy yard and a 7lb rise for the most recent of those victories may not be enough to stop him from rounding out the hat-trick. Uncle Bert also won well on his latest outing and is an obvious threat to the selection. Others to consider in an open event are Cheddleton, Jungle Jack and Llandinabo Lad.
WIN: PICKANUMBER
DANGER: UNCLE BERT
RA CE 2
RA CE 3
JUMBO VESTE VERTE put in a career best when a close third over 2m at Southwell on his second handicap start last month. That form has worked out well and this unexposed five-year-old merits plenty of respect off a 1lb lower figure. Professor Klump got off the mark at Carlisle last time and that evidence suggests that a rating of 101 should be workable. El Jefe and The Famous Five are next best.
WIN: JUMBO VESTE VERTE
DANGER: PROFESSOR KLUMP
RA CE 4
Cases can be made for all of these, but marginal preference is for MONTGOMERY. The seven-year-old has won both of his starts for Venetia Williams, including a -17length success at Leicester a couple of weeks ago, and he remains open to further progression. Ballycamus was not disgraced at Newbury last time and should not be underestimated in a race of this nature, while Red Rookie has valid form claims if seeing out the trip.
WIN: MONTGOMERY
DANGER: BALLYCAMUS
RA CE 5
A determined winner over 2m6f at Lingfield, HUNTER LEGEND should have no issue with the drop in trip, having shown plenty of form over shorter throughout this season. Soft ground is another plus and he should have too much for Mini Yeats, who returned to form on his chasing bow when runner-up at Taunton. One Last Glance has been consistent this term and is another who must enter calculations.
WIN: HUNTER LEGEND
DANGER: MINI YEATS
A winner of two bumpers here and runner-up over C&D on his latest start, GUARD THE MOON clearly has an affinity for Bangor and this looks like an ideal opportunity to get off the mark over hurdles. Grand Albert has half a length to find with him from their meeting here in a bumper back in December, and Donald McCain’s charge has since run with credit over timber Kenny’s Park was well beaten at Hereford, but better may be expected on softer ground.
WIN: GUARD THE MOON
RA CE 6
DANGER: GRAND ALBERT
A tentative vote goes to MISTYMAL, who may have disappointed at Fakenham but is better judged on his previous effort when runner-up at Southwell. This is only a third start in a handicap for Tim Vaughan’s six-year-old and he may have more scope for improvement than Fantomas, who regained the winning thread in determined fashion at Hereford. Behind him in third on that occasion was Sea Village, who has plenty of ground to make up but remains on a workable mark.
WIN: MISTYMAL
DANGER: FANTOMAS

Race Summary:
LIBERTY LANE was impressive over this C&D on soft at last year’s St Leger meeting and this relatively lightly-raced 4-y-o appeals as one who could have more to come in 2024. Chazzesmee was a good winner of the Irish version of this race on Monday and a 5lb penalty won’t prevent him making a bold bid for a notable double if coping with the quick turnaround. Awaal was second in this off an identical mark last year and also makes the shortlist along with Thunder Ball

EVACUATION PROCEDURE
18 Bangor Racecourse has enhanced Safety & Security measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment of the day. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency.
We employ professionally trained and experienced stewards who are located predominantly around the course and are identifiable by their uniform.
In the event of a situation that requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards.
The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember:
• Take your belongings with you;
• Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.
