A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
WEDNESDAY 28TH FEBRUARY 2024
Good afternoon,
Welcome to Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse for the Broughton Hall Estates Spring into Racing Day.
It’s a pleasure to welcome you to our first fixture of the year After an unfortunate abandonment of the North Wales National fixture earlier in the month, we are delighted to have moved the North Wales National Handicap Steeple Chase to today It’s set to be a fantastic race with a great field of runners.
First up on the card today is the John Hewitt Memorial Novices’ Handicap Steeple Chase at 2.20pm. The highlight of the day comes at 3.20pm in the form of the Broughton Hall Estates North Wales National Steeple Chase, with a total prize pot of £20,000 The day comes to a close at 4.50pm with the Bangor-on-Dee Handicap Hurdle Race.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank todays sponsors, Broughton Hall Estates, DragonBet, and Camden Stout. Your support is very much valued and appreciated.
I hope you’ll join us again on Saturday 23rd March for the DragonBet Premier Hurdle Day, which is sure to be another fantastic day of racing here at the only racecourse in North Wales.

HOW TO BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER
WAYS TO BET
STRAIGHT EACH WAY
Win only
A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.
STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
· Fewer than 5 runners – all to win
5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2
· 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3
Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3
· Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4
AWAY BETTING
Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)
BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE
At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.
PLACING YOUR BET
Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.
COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS
If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY.
Tel: 01480 499180
In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

15. A guide to the horse’s recent form and star rating. Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
16. Jockey’s Name. If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS
BEST SELECTIONS ON THE DAY
Thatza Dazzler picked up the pieces in a strongly-run affair when opening his account at Ludlow last week. It remains to be seen whether the six-year-old can back that performance up, but he warrants consideration shouldering a 7lb penalty. David Brace’s charge is likely to be priced accordingly, so it could be worth taking a chance on handicap/chase debutant SHADY B. The Saint Des Saints gelding boasts some fair form between the flags and his opening mark looks workable. Yellow Jacket also makes some appeal.
WIN: SHADY B
EACHWAY: THATZA DAZZLER
RA CE 2
RA CE 3
A 5lb rise in the ratings wasn’t enough to prevent BREEZE OF WIND from completing a hat-trick at Carlisle earlier in the month. Stuart Coltherd’s gelding looks more than capable of defying this 6lb higher mark and a four-timer could be on the cards. Stable/chase debutant Montgomery is a potential fly in the ointment now under the tutelage of Venetia Williams and any market support for the seven-year-old would be interesting, while first-time blinkers could spark Domandlouis’ interest
WIN: BREEZE OF WIND EACHWAY: MONTGOMERY
RA CE 4
WHYDAH GALLY relished the step up in trip when landing a first chase victory over 3m5f at Lingfield recently and the eight-year-old likely has more to offer over these marathon distances. A 6lb rise in the ratings and quick turnaround will give hope to his rivals and Gold Emery is feared most. Donald McCain’s charge is a potential improver now faced with a stiffer test of stamina. Ali Star Bert and Duke Of Deception have the form to feature as well.
WIN: WHYDAH GALLY EACHWAY: GOLD EMERY
Point-to-point winner PITWOOD ROAD clearly benefitted from the application of blinkers (retained) when scoring comfortably in an Ayr bumper earlier this month, and she may have too much for her rivals now tackling hurdles. The unexposed Miss Maverick finished second behind a useful mare in a Uttoxeter bumper last April and she can make her presence felt, while Strong Belle is one of the likely pace angles and could hit the frame.
WIN: PITWOOD ROAD
EACHWAY: MISS MAVERICK
RA CE 5
ABSOLUTE STEEL scored at huge odds over an extended 2m2f at Exeter earlier this month, keeping on gamely to the line, and, easing slightly in grade, he gets the nod to come home in front once more and prove that performance to be no fluke. Fellow last-time-out winner Panhandle Slim shouldn’t be overlooked lightly, while Mr Bramley gave the impression that he was still very much a work in progress when finishing a close second in a Wetherby bumper latest
WIN: ABSOLUTE STEEL
EACHWAY: PANHANDLE SLIM
RA CE 6
GLOBE PLAYER represents a trainer firmly on the hot list and, on the back of an impressive win on his most recent start over 3m at Southwell, he can make a bold bid to go in again having been upped 8lb. Catch Him Derry got off the mark in workmanlike fashion on his handicap debut over an extended 3m at Southwell last month, but a 6lb rise will make life tougher, while Phil De Pail was in good form when last seen over 600 days ago and the market should tell us more on his return.
WIN: GLOBE PLAYER
EACHWAY: CATCH HIM DERRY
