A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN FRIDAY 15TH DECEMBER 2023 Good Afternoon, Welcome to the final meeting of 2023 here at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse – The Corbettsports Christmas Special. Today we celebrate the festive season, as well as reflect on a fantastic year of racing at North Wales only racetrack. Our racecard today features 7 exciting races. The first of which will begin at 12:20pm in the form of The Corbettsports Handicap Steeple Chase. Later in the afternoon, all eyes will be on the 1:30pm race, the Alfa Aggregate Products Golden Spurs Handicap Steeple Chase with a total prize pot of £30,000. Finally, the day will end with The JBF Group Open National Hunt Flat Race at 3:42pm. I’d like to extend our thanks to today’s title sponsor – Corbettsports. Corbettsports are one of our longest-standing supporters both here at Bangor-on-Dee, but also at our sister track, Chester Racecourse. HOW TO BET WITH A
RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER
WAYS TO BET
STRAIGHT
Win only
EACH WAY
A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.
STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. · Fewer than 5 runners – all to win · 5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2 · 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3 · Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3 · Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4
AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)
BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.
PLACING YOUR BET Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.
COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY. Tel: 01480 499180 In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE 1
HORACIO APPLE’S shaped better than the finishing position suggests when fifth at Wetherby last month. The drop in trip from 3m may see the gelded son of Saddex in a better light and he’s taken to get the better of Fakir. The eight-year-old finished runner-up on his reappearance at Sedgefield in October and is likely to be the mix once more, while Lady Of The Night races off a career-low mark and she cannot be ruled out either. WIN: HORACIO APPLE’S DANGER: FAKIR
A tentative vote is for CHRIS COOL, who exploited a career-low mark of 96 when scoring in good style over 3m1f at Huntingdon last month. A repeat of that effort, up just 6lb in the ratings, would make him difficult to stop. Butler’s Brief rates as the biggest danger up 4lb for his comfortable success over 3m2f at Kelso, while the consistent Shallow River is expected to hit the frame. WIN: CHRIS COOL DANGER: BUTLER’S BRIEF
CLASSIC LORD was a bloodless winner over the extended 2m1f at Fontwell last time and this looks a good opportunity to follow up that success. The five-year-old can continue on an upward trajectory. Just Gino is fancied to give the selection most to think about on his first start under Rules for the in-form Donald McCain yard, while Two Auld Pals makes most appeal of the remainder. WIN: CLASSIC LORD DANGER: JUST GINO
RACE 7
RACE 6
RACE 4
YES INDEED was far from disgraced when finishing third on his reappearance in a competitive handicap chase at Carlisle last month and any natural improvement could make the gelding tough to pass. Hold That Taught is also likely to prove popular after his victory at Ascot. A 3lb rise is unlikely to prevent another bold bid from the eight-year-old and he merits respect, while First Lord De Cuet should make his presence felt too. WIN: YES INDEED DANGER: HOLD THAT TAUGHT
RACE 5
RACE 3
HECTOR MASTER has posted two solid runner-up efforts since going chasing this season and a 3lb rise for his latest second at Kelso may not be enough to prevent the six-year-old from gaining a first career success. The in-form veteran Abaya Du Mathan should put his experience in this sphere to good use and may give the selection most to think about, ahead of winning pointer Ballybeg Boss. WIN: HECTOR MASTER DANGER: ABAYA DU MATHAN
RACE 2
TODAY’S TOP TIPS
Mullins Cross has been running to a consistent level in recent starts and she must enter calculations, but a chance can be taken on WHITEHAVEN. A useful sort on the Flat, Donald McCain’s charge finished down the field on last month’s reappearance but ought to improve for the run and his earlier hurdling form would give him every chance, with forecast ground conditions expected to be no problem. Rolypolymoly is also noted. WIN: WHITEHAVEN DANGER: MULLINS CROSS
GUARD THE MOON trounced his rivals over C&D earlier this month. On that evidence, Nigel Twiston-Davies’ five-year-old looks more than capable of carrying a penalty to further success, although point-to-point winner Josie Alice, a half-sister to three winners including bumper scorer The New One, could have a say on her Rules debut. Grand Albert is another to take seriously, while Lawrenny is worth a market check too. WIN: GUARD THE MOON DANGER: JOSIE ALICE

Raceday preview from Weatherbys Race two on today’s card – the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk. Handicap Chase – is one of two contests sponsored by Weatherbys and eight horses go to post for this 0-105 event. A winner at this track over hurdles, Horacio Apple’s represents the local training duo of Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero, who have enjoyed a fine season to date. Whilst Jagwar, White Rhino and recent Grand Sefton Chase winner Gesskille are in action down at Cheltenham, this lightly-raced sixyear-old is one of four runners on the
Horacio Apple’s trainers have enjoyed a fine season to date. card for the stable. He has had just the two starts over fences and looked as though he didn’t quite get home over 3m on heavy ground last time, so the drop in trip is a positive and Toby Wynne retains the partnership. Another who represents a local yard – that of Donald McCain – is Henry Gray, who looked in need of the run on his chase debut at Market Rasen. Again, coming back in trip looks to be a plus, as he ran well for a long way last time and a tongue-tie is applied. Jonjo O’Neill’s Our Friend Mo makes her first start over fences, having unseated WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW
her rider in a hurdle race here earlier in the month, whilst bottom-weight Nine Nine Nine ran well under similar conditions at Uttoxeter last time. The other quartet are more exposed. Seven go to post for the Weatherbys & Birdie Calendars “Hands And Heels” Handicap Hurdle, a 0-105 contest for conditional and amateur jockeys, in which the aforementioned Donald McCain saddles three. McCain won this race in both 2016 (Raise A Spark) and in 2021 with Lady Tremaine and of his trio, useful Flat performer Whitehaven sports blinkers for the first time, under Charlie Maggs, who rode a winner here in August. McCain also runs top-weight Present Fair, who reverts to hurdles from chasing, and handicap debutant Chase Outlaw. The ground is an unknown for the latter, who is having his first start in 13 months. Another returning from a lengthy break is Jennie Candlish’s Cosheston, whilst Book Of Verse is another who has yet to prove himself on this sort of ground. Rolypolymoly is having his first start for Robbie Llewellyn, who enjoyed a fine start to the season, and Mullins Cross represents the ever-respected ‘Shark’ Hanlon. The County Carlow trainer has saddled two winners form 11 runners at this track, although his seven-year-old has won just once from 27 starts over hurdles.
