A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN SATURDAY 2ND DECEMBER 2023 Good Afternoon, Welcome to Bangor-on-Dee for our penultimate fixture of 2023, the Early December Meeting. After two consecutive abandonments due to bad weather, we’re delighted to be back racing with you all just in time for the Christmas festivities. We have six exciting hurdle races on the card for you today. The anticipation will build for our first race at 12.36pm – The Xenon Handicap Hurdle Race. Later in the afternoon at 2.56pm, conditional jockeys will take to the track as part of the Conditional Jockeys’ Training Series. Finally, the days racing will draw to a close at 3.31pm when The Excel Signs Open National Hunt Flat Race crosses the winning post. I’d like to extend our thanks to today’s sponsors – Xenon, Yorton Stud and Excel Signs. All of us here at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse are grateful for your continued support. As you may be aware, the government is trying to implement new betting affordability/financial risk checks that could severely hinder our sport. I hope you’ll join me in signing the petition to help stop this happening. You will find a QR code enclosed in this race card. Our next and final meeting of 2023 is The CorbettSports Christmas Special on 15 December. I hope you’ll join us again as we bid farewell to an incredible year of racing here at North Wales only racecourse. Jonathon Turner, Chairman Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse

HOW TO BET WITH A
RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER
WAYS TO BET
STRAIGHT
Win only
EACH WAY
A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.
STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. · Fewer than 5 runners – all to win · 5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2 · 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3 · Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3 · Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4
AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)
BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.
PLACING YOUR BET Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.
COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY. Tel: 01480 499180 In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE 1
TODAY’S TOP TIPS MAGICAL KING has finished second on both starts over hurdles at Uttoxeter and Aintree and the four-year-old is likely to have plenty more to offer on his handicap debut. Ballygeary performed with a considerable amount of promise when third at Cheltenham on his return in October and is open to improvement stepping back up in distance. Skycutter, who makes his first start for Dan Skelton, and Issam are others worth considering.
RACE 2
WIN: MAGICAL KING
THUNDERCLAP seemed to improve with each start over hurdles last season, ending with victory at Sedgefield in April at the fifth attempt, and the five-year-old is expected to be very competitive now switching to handicaps. Risk D’Argent is likely to enter calculations following his second at Warwick last month, while the consistent John Betjeman and Feel The Pinch, a winner over fences at Ludlow on Monday, appeal most of the remainder.
RACE 3
WIN: THUNDERCLAP
RACE 4
DANGER: CLONDAW ROYALE
A Cheltenham Grade 2 was all too much at this stage of his career for ACT OF AUTHORITY and he trailed home sixth behind subsequent Greatwood runner-up Lookaway, with last weekend’s impressive Haydock scorer Kamsinas in second. This is a considerably easier task for Olly Murphy’s representative and he can defy the 6lb penalty picked up for his hurdling debut success over C&D. Tedtwo has switched to the Kerry Lee team since a promising bumper campaign, while Panhandle Slim has also shown enough to warrant an interest. WIN: ACT OF AUTHORITY
RACE 5
DANGER: RISK D’ARGENT
KILBARRY HILL shaped encouragingly to finish third on his Rules debut at Warwick over 2m last month and Olly Murphy’s gelding wouldn’t need to improve much from that display to get off the mark. Clondaw Royale took a step in the right direction when also hitting the frame at Warwick on his latest start. A repeat of that effort would give him every chance, while I See The Sea is likely to step forward from his bumper outing at Chepstow. WIN: KILBARRY HILL
DANGER: TEDTWO
SHESUPINCOURT was unlucky to part company with her jockey on her chasing debut at Chepstow last week, but she was sent off favourite on the back of a success over the smaller obstacles there and can show her appreciation for the return to timber. Committee Of One and Our Friend Mo were third and fourth respectively in that race won by Ryan Potter’s mare and a bigger threat now could come in the shape of Bushtucker Park, who made the frame at Warwick on the same day. WIN: SHESUPINCOURT
RACE 6
DANGER: BALLYGEARY
DANGER: BUSHTUCKER PARK
ISHOLO DU VIVIEN broke through at the fourth attempt between the flags with an emphatic all-the-way triumph on his return to the fray and, if he brings that level of form to his debut under Rules, he could prove too strong. Better is expected from Guard The Moon now he has a Newbury run under his belt, with the experience expected to help him settle much better now. Olly Murphy went to 75,000 euros for Gallonray, but he also held an entry at Musselburgh on Friday. WIN: ISHOLO DU VIVIEN
DANGER: GUARD THE MOON

JOHN BURGESS RACECOURSE VETERINARY OFFICER John Burgess has been a Racecourse Veterinary Officer covering the North West and North Wales for close to 50 years. Acting at race meetings at Aintree, Bangor-on-Dee, Chester and Haydock Park during this time. Many changes in the veterinary, and in the horse racing world, and the improvements in horse treatment and welfare have been seen by John - an amazing career in the Horse Racing Industry. Much of this time was spent alongside being a practising Veterinary Surgeon – always a busy person! Even after his retirement from practice and then from being a Racecourse Veterinary Officer, he is still very much involved - now being a Veterinary Officer for the British Horseracing Authority – officiating on the same racecourses. You can’t keep a good man down! All four racecourses are represented here today to see John enjoy a rare day on the racecourse as our guest. We would all like to offer our most sincere thanks for his continued long service to the Racing Industry and to us in particular.

Race Summary: Highly progressive in his novice season over fences, MONBEG GENIUS was undone by a mistake on his return at Ascot 4 weeks ago. The pick of his form last term, not least his third behind subsequent National hero Corach Rambler at Cheltenham in March, indicates he remains one to be interested in from this mark.
