SATURDAY 20TH MAY YOUR GUIDE TO TODAY’S RACING Official racecard £3 UR FAMILY WREXHAM THE WREXHAM LAGER

A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

SATURDAY 20 MAY 2023

Good Afternoon,

I’m delighted to welcome you to Bangor-on-Dee for the Wrexham Lager Wrexham Family Day.

Today, we get to enjoy thrilling racing on the track, and lots of family fun off the track, with a range of free activities on the Open Course.

We have seven exciting races on today’s card. We start the action at 1.35pm with the Wrexham Lager Welsh Gold Liquid Trophy Maiden Hurdle race. Later, we have our most valuable race of the day, the Remembering Kitty Warburton Handicap Steeple Chase with a prize of £18,000 We then conclude the day with the Mares’ Open National Hunt Flat Race at 5.05pm.

I’d like to extend my thanks to today’s sponsors, Wrexham Lager and The Buck. All of us here at Bangor-on-Dee are incredibly grateful for your support.

Today is tinged with sadness following the passing of Richard Aston, our Racecourse Chairman. However, there is no better way to celebrate his life, his contribution to racing, to this racecourse and to the Thoroughbred breed than everyone here today having a great days racing.

We next race here at Bangor-on-Dee on the 10th June for the Summer Saturday meeting. I hope you’ll join us again for another enjoyable Saturday fixture, at North Wales’s only racecourse.

HOW TO BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER

WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT

Win only

EACH WAY

A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.

STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

· Fewer than 5 runners – all to win

5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2

· 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3

Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3

· Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

AWAY BETTING

Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE

At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

PLACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS

If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings.

Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall,Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY.

Tel: 01480 499180

In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS

Alastair Ralph boasts a 19% strike-rate (+£45.24 level stakes profit) with his runners at Bangor-on-Dee in the last five seasons. The Shropshire trainer is represented today by Churchman (1.35), Kabrit (2.10) and Your Band (2.10).

Faded Fantasy ran his best race to date when third in a juvenile hurdle at Taunton in March and a similar performance should see him involved once more. Preference, however, is for WASPY, who was last seen falling at the first flight at Sedgefield. Donald McCain’s gelding will need to put that mishap behind him, but his penultimate second over course and distance in February looks the best form on offer Churchman completes the shortlist

WIN: WASPY

DANGER: FADED FANTASY

Oceans Red boasts a course and distance success to his name, but he returns here off a high enough mark and the seven-year-old may prove worth taking on. COO STAR SIVOLA shaped better than the beaten distance at Warwick last month and the veteran could be ready to capitalise on a declining rating. Heart Of A Lion has often appeared as if this stiffer test could suit and he’s another to consider now 5lb lower than his last triumph.

WIN: COO STAR SIVOLA

DANGER: HEART OF A LION

EL BORRACHO confirmed his well-being with a cosy success on the Flat recently and he looks more than capable of following up on his return to hurdles. Hidalgo De L’isle was down the field at Musselburgh in March and this course and distance winner is feared most Copper Beach could also have a say if putting his latest appearance at Market Rasen on Boxing Day behind him.

WIN: EL BORRACHO

DANGER: HIDALGO DE L’ISLE

GABRIEL’S GETAWAY hasn’t looked back since making his chase debut in February, with three victories to his name, and another 9lb rise in the ratings for his latest success at Exeter may not prevent him from completing a four-timer. Norley gained his first success over fences last month and is likely to have more to offer in this sphere, despite a 9lb hike. The Paddy Pie makes most appeal of the remaining rivals.

WIN: GABRIEL’S GETAWAY

DANGER: NORLEY

Universal Folly remains in good form and he’s considered along with Landen Calling, who appeals as the type to find improvement now switched to the larger obstacles, although preference is for THE WREKIN. Henry Daly’s charge hit the woodwork on his chasing bow last month and, with the benefit of his rider’s 7lb claim, it would be no surprise were he to go one better

DANGER: UNIVERSAL FOLLY RA

WIN: THE WREKIN

Donald McCain has often found success when sending his seasoned chasers back over timber, and that could be the case with ARMATTIEKAN. The nine-year-old was pulled up on his last two starts over fences, but he looks well treated back in this sphere and it would come as no surprise were he to rediscover the winning touch. Luna Dora remains capable of going well and must be on the shortlist, along with Dee Eire.

WIN: ARMATTIEKAN

DANGER: LUNA DORA

SUNDAY SOLDIER was no match for an impressive winner at Southwell when second on her latest outing. However, that form appeals as the best on offer and she could open her account if running to a similar level. Queen Of Hindsight shaped encouragingly at Hexham on her racecourse debut and will be a threat should she take a step forward. Others to note include Granny Hawkins, Presently and Emma Hamilton.

WIN: SUNDAY SOLDIER

DANGER: QUEEN OF HINDSIGHT

In partnership with his wife Sally, Richard developed the leading UK based dual purpose thoroughbred breeding stud and sales consignment operation Goldford Stud and in so doing created an iconic brand name within the industry

We have been fortunate to have benefitted from the dedication, passion and leadership that Richard provided to Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse and Chester Race Company over the years. He contributed greatly to Chester Race Company, serving on the Bangor-on-Dee Committee since 2007 and as its Chair from 2016

Richard was a very good Point to Point rider himself back in the day and was delighted when the Point to Point track was created at Bangor-on-Dee, as he was always very keen to support the grass roots of jump racing.

As a member of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Committee he was the driving force behind the inaugural TBA Foal Show which took place at Bangor on Dee in 2013 the first of its kind in the UK.

Another progress within Bangor-on-Dee that Richard was very proud of was the big step forward that came with the opening of the current Owners and Trainers facility in 2018 when Bangor-on-Dee became the Racehorse Owners’ Association Small Racecourse of the year for its provision for Owners and Trainers. He was always keen to keep this up to standard, knowing how important this is to the industry, owners and the Racecourse itself

The latest major development led by Richard was the increase in prize money at Bangor-on-Dee to over £1million for 2023 – a major move for a small racecourse.

His knowledge of the Thoroughbred industry was second to none and we at Bangor-on-Dee were very lucky to have him as our Chairman for so many years. We will miss him, his presence in the Parade Ring on racedays and his support on a daily basis.

Thank you Richard.

HEART OF A LION has been very lightly raced since his chase debut success at Ludlow in 2021 but arrives here having very much caught the eye from a long way back when third at Fontwell (19.5f) 4 weeks ago and, unexposed at this sort of trip, he could be worth chancing to build on that now. HORSE WELFARE

At all our race meetings there are three equine veterinary surgeons on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to injured horses. This may involve screens being erected around a fallen horse but does not necessarily mean that it is fatally injured.

11-4 The Wrekin (IRE), 7-2 Universal Folly (GB), Supervisor (IRE), 4-1 Landen Calling (IRE), 8-1 Inishbiggle (IRE)

Race Summary:

An interesting race despite the small field with the narrow vote in favour of SUPERVISOR. He again shaped well (looked likely winner) when falling 4 out when last seen at Ludlow in November and, in the hope this trip doesn’t stretch him, he can prove his mark a lenient one Universal Folly should appreciate this step back up in trip and is feared, with The Wrekin also worth a second look
