Good Afternoon,
Welcome to our Christmas Special at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse. Today is the concluding fixture of 2022, and our General Manager Jeannie Chantler’s last race day at Bangor-on-Dee as she begins her well-deserved retirement from the role. Jeannie has headed up Bangor-on-Dee since 1997 and her dedication, hard-work, and love for the sport of racing has made the racecourse what it is today.
Today we have seven exciting races on the card. First in the order is The Corbett Sports Handicap Chase at 12:20pm. Our third race at 1:30pm is our highest value race of the day The Alfa Aggregate Products Golden Spurs Handicap Steeple Chase, with a prize of £30,000 Finally, the day’s racing will close at 3:45pm with The Thank you Jeannie Chantler Open National Hunt Flat Race.
I’d like to extend our thanks to today’s sponsors Corbett Sports, Your Space, Alfa Aggregates, RW Hough and Sons and DTS Scaffolding. All of us here at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse are grateful for your support.
We next race here at the only racecourse in North Wales on Thursday 12th January for the Hen Galan Meeting. I hope you’ll join us again then for our first fixture of 2023 at Bangor-on-Dee.
Tickets for our 2023 fixtures are now on sale including hospitality bookings. You can find more information on these dates as well as book your tickets on our website bangorondeeraces.co.uk.

15. Aguide to the horse’s recentform and star rating. Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
16. Jockey’s Name. If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Win only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
· Fewer than 5 runners – all to win
5-7 runners 1/4 odds a place 1-2
· 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3
Handicaps with 12-15 runners 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3
· Handicaps with 16 or more runners 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4
Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)
At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.
Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.
If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings.
Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall,Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY.
Tel: 01480 499180
In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.
A left-handed track of approximately one mile three furlongs in circumference. There are nine relatively easy fences per circuit and a run-in of 325 yards. Three tight turns make the course somewhat sharp in nature

BOLSOVER BILL caught the eye when recording a comfortable win at Catterick on his latest outing last month. A 5lb raised mark may not be enough to stop him following up given he kept on to score by two and a quarter lengths, but Starvoski should not be underestimated with a run under her belt this season. Miss Mcgugen completes the shortlist on her return to action.
WIN: BOLSOVER BILL DANGER: STARVOSKI
It could be dangerous to dismiss Good Work, who arrives following a good second at Uttoxeter last month, but the Sam Thomas-trained BALLYBEEN built on his seasonal debut when filling the runner-up spot at Hereford in the hands of Charlie Deutsch most recently. He has gone up 5lb for that run but talented conditional Shane Quinlan knocks 3lb off the gelding’s back today, so he merits the utmost respect Caro Des Flos completes the shortlist
WIN: BALLYBEEN DANGER: GOOD WORK
Fuji Flight has dropped to just 3lb above his last winning mark and can have a say in proceedings down in class from his most recent outing, but it was hard not to be impressed by ONLY THE BOLD when bolting up on both his chase and stable debut over this course and distance last month. He can follow up off a 10lb raised mark, but Golden Sovereign is another not to be taken lightly
WIN: ONLY THE BOLD DANGER: FUJI FLIGHT
The veteran BOBO MAC is showing no signs of his advancing years catching up with him, as he has looked in great nick this season, and he is fancied to back up his recent cosy Chepstow success. Jubilee Express went down fighting when failing to justify favouritism at Lingfield on his seasonal reappearance last month and could improve for this longer trip. David Pipe won this race last year and his Itacare isn’t without a chance either
WIN: BOBO MAC DANGER: JUBILEE EXPRESS
Donald McCain has won this three times in the past five years and looks to have strong claims in adding to that impressive record with IVAR, who has had a wind operation since his runnerup effort over C&D last month. Bubble Dubi has shown a decent level of form in both starts over hurdles and looks the likely danger Howlingmadmurdock makes his debut over obstacles having won a bumper for Anthony Honeyball earlier in the year and is worth a market check.
WIN: IVAR DANGER: BUBBLE DUBI RA
It may pay dividends to side with in-form five-year-old HERITIER, who arrives on the hunt for a first victory over hurdles. The progressive gelding recorded a career-best effort when readily dismissing his rivals over fences at Market Rasen last time and, given George Cowley’s claim, he is effectively 5lb lower on his return over the smaller obstacles. Lady Tremaine is capable on her day and demands the utmost respect on seasonal reappearance, while Razzo Italiano completes the shortlist.
WIN: HERITIER DANGER: LADY TREMAINE RA CE 6
In this fascinating contest marginal preference is for AMIDNIGHTSTAR, who gave a good account when runner-up at Stratford on her debut under Rules. The five-year-old’s dam was a dual winner on the Flat and she may be able to take a step forward in this contest Ballybeg Boss was victorious in a point-to-point in April and must be respected after being bought for 50,000 pounds, while La Pagerie is related to plenty of winners and can’t be overlooked either.
WIN: AMIDNIGHTSTAR DANGER: BALLYBEG BOSS
