HOW TO BET WITH A

RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER

WAYS TO BET

STRAIGHT

Win only

EACH WAY

A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.

STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. · Fewer than 5 runners – all to win · 5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2 · 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3 · Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3 · Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

PLACING YOUR BET Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall,Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY. Tel: 01480 499180 In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE 1

DID YOU KNOW

TODAY’S TOP TIPS All but one of Finn Lambert’s seven victories in the saddle have come for Nigel Twiston-Davies and they team up with The Kniphand in the finale at 4.52. The newcomer is the only runner on the card for the dual Grand National-winning trainer, who has a 25% strike-rate with his bumper runners here in the last five years.

Oliver Greenall and Toby Wynne teamed up for success at Southwell earlier in the week, and they come here with a huge chance in the shape of LUCKY LOVER BOY. The son of Teofilo bounced back to form with a good fourth at Carlisle on his latest start, and he may be ready to take advantage of a sliding handicap mark. Donald McCain saddles Beach Break and Taragrace, and they both appear to have solid claims.

RACE 2

WIN: LUCKY LOVER BOY

KATPOLI has run with credit in some strong contests this season, and now sits 16lb below his last winning mark. His trainer Richard Newland has been in great form, and his seven-year-old can provide him with more success. Ecume Atlantique made the switch from France to Richard Bandey and won first time up at Wetherby, coming off a 464-day break, so should have more to offer. C&D winner Twotwothree is expected to be on the premises too.

RACE 3

WIN: KATPOLI

DANGER: ECUME ATLANTIQUE

DARANOVA made a solid start for Gary Hanmer when filling the runner-up spot at Warwick. The winner of that race was set to follow up from 8lb higher at Uttoxeter before falling at the last, which gives a solid look to the form, while the step up in trip should benefit the selection too. On The Platform is expected to run another bold race, while top-weight Methodtothemadness can also be involved, with Patrick Wadge claiming a handy 10lb. WIN: DARANOVA

RACE 4

DANGER: TARAGRACE

DANGER: ON THE PLATFORM

DAWN RAIDER has been an excellent servant for Gary Hanmer in recent weeks, winning back-to-back races before running a solid second at Newcastle. Up 2lb for that, he might still have enough in the tank to take this contest. Harry Du Berlais was a winner between the flags so it’s interesting he switches from novice hurdles straight into handicap company over fences, while Bitasweetsymphony could be better for the return to this trip.

RACE 5

DANGER: HARRY DU BERLAIS

IN OUR DREAMS filled the runner-up spot in a couple of races at Ludlow last summer and though his more recent exploits have been below that level, they have come on soft ground. A sounder surface should play to his strengths, which is possibly not the case for Dedanser, who was said to be unsuited by the good going at Newcastle. He would have every chance if there’s rain, though the biggest threat to the selection could be recent Wincanton third Tigerbythetail. WIN: IN OUR DREAMS DANGER: TIGERBYTHETAIL

RACE 6

WIN: DAWN RAIDER

Bel Fondo is the only horse with experience but she was beaten a long way on debut. Lady Alex is related to a winner in this sphere and is interesting, while Sworn To Be Free is out of a bumper winner and could go well too. Donald McCain appears to hold a very strong hand, with Islebriand, Lovin Jukebox and Trick Of The Tail offering ample support to SPIRIT OF REGULUS. The 64,000-euro purchase is out of a Grade 1-winning hurdler in France and looks the one to side with. WIN: SPIRIT OF REGULUS DANGER: LADY ALEX

Race Summary: A smashing staying handicap to kick off the card with the vote in favour of WINTER FOG. A low-mileage 8-y-o, he ran his best race yet when fourth in last month’s Pertemps Final at Cheltenham, impressing with his move into contention. He’s on a handy mark, and a strong pace to aim at will suit, so he looks sure to go well. Party Business was a big eyecatcher himself at the Festival and is feared, along with upwardly-mobile pair Serious Charges and Beauport. Punting Poet appeals each-way.

Race Summary: NORTH LODGE, a C&D winner on debut back in December, lost little in defeat when beaten by a very narrow margin by Nells Son under a 5lb penalty at Kelso last month, and he’s a very appealing candidate now back up in trip, especially with the prospect of more to come after just 3 starts. Three Stripe Life sets the standard on his runner-up effort to Sir Gerhard in the Ballymore at the Cheltenham Festival, while Good Risk At All and Walking On Air are others to take seriously.

WEATHERBYS NHSTALLIONS.CO.UK HANDICAP CHASE Eight horses go to post for race two on today’s card, the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Handicap Chase and the weights for this 0-120 contest are headed by the Richard Bandey-trained Ecume Atlantique, who made a winning British debut at Wetherby just 18 days ago. Formerly trained by Emmanuel Clayeux in France, the eight-year-old made virtually all of the running and having fenced well, showed a willing attitude to prevail by a nose. That was his first start in some time, so he can be expected to strip fitter for the outing and off a 2lbs higher mark, looks to hold sound claims of following up. Oliver Greenall’s Twotwothree is the only course winner in the line-up, but that victory came back in October 2019 and he has now dropped to his last winning mark (115). The local trainer has his horses in fine form at present and having been hurdling of late, will appreciate reverting to the larger obstacles. Cheek-pieces are applied for the first time. Two more local trainers – Donald McCain and Gary Hamner – are represented, with Theo Gillard partnering McCain’s Cenotice, whilst Brian Hughes takes the mount aboard the mare Costly Diamond. The former hasn’t been in the best of form of late, whilst the latter drops in class and was successful under similar conditions (off a 3lbs lower mark) at Sedgefield last September. As with many of the sire’s progeny, the daughter of Mahler enjoys good ground and she should go well under the champion-elect. Ar Mest has yet to win a race in 11 starts over fences, but has been knocking of the door of late and has finished a close second on both starts since switching to the Henry Oliver stable. That said, he was beaten in a match last time and although he handles conditions, probably needs to improve again. Katpoli was a faller behind likely market leader Ecume Atlantique at Wetherby last time, having earlier finished fourth in a stronger grade at Sandown. Good enough to contest a Grade 2 juvenile hurdle on his second start in Britain, he won twice over fences as a novice a couple of seasons back and has a touch of class, although it is worth noting that those two victories did come on soft ground. He wears first-time blinkers and is respected. The pair of 10-year-olds – Instant Replay and Billingsley – complete the line-up, with the former representing trainer Brian Ellison. Another who hasn’t been in the best of form of late, he does appreciate good ground but might, perhaps, want a shade further. Two years ago Billingsley was a rapid-improver when rattling up a hat-trick as a novice and he returned to winning ways at Fontwell in February. Partnered by today’s rider on that occasion, he faded on soft ground over course-and-distance last time and has subsequently been dropped 2lbs by the handicapper. Paul Ferguson Weatherbys

Clearly saved for this, he warmed up with a pleasing win in a good time from 3 of today’s rivals at Fairyhouse 6 weeks ago and can give Ireland their fifth victory in the last 6 renewals.
