Greetings and welcome to the 2025 MARS Badminton Horse Trials. We are thrilled to return for the 76th running of this iconic event and are incredibly honoured to be the third title sponsor in its illustrious history You are in for an exhilarating weekend of world class Eventing as the top athletes and their equine partners from around the world take on the course at the beautiful Badminton Estate.
The MARS EQUESTRIAN™ sponsorship of the event is only the latest illustration of Mars’ multi-generational impact on equestrian sports and the equine industry Going back to the 1930s, the founders of Mars, Incorporated, Frank and Ethel V. Mars, established a renowned Thoroughbred breeding and racing stable in Pulaski, Tennessee. They named the property Milky Way Farm, in honour of their best-selling candy bar, and followed up by naming their new SNICKERS® Bar after one of the family’s beloved horses. A decade later, their long-shot Gallahadion carried the Mars silks into the winner’s circle at the 1940 Kentucky Derby. Today, the Mars family and business alike share a passion for horses and equestrian sports across all disciplines.
The partnership with Badminton is a unique opportunity for MARS EQUESTRIAN to showcase the breadth of Mars, Incorporated’s brands and services to create a better world for horses, pets and the people who love them. Equestrian Sport is the perfect intersection of our diverse business including Petcare brands like PEDIGREE® , James Wellbeloved™ and ROYAL CANIN®; Horsecare brands SPILLERS™ and BUCKEYE Nutrition™; Science and Diagnostics brands including ANTECH™ and WISDOM PANEL™; and iconic Confectionary brands such as M&M’s® , MARS BAR® , MALTESERS® , SNICKERS® , TWIX® , and Skittles®
To ensure and promote the best in equine welfare, the MARS Equine Veterinary Centre will provide a full imaging and diagnostic suite onsite to assist the veterinarian team and all international and domestic competitor teams. William Fox-Pitt
When William Fox-Pitt set off across country at Mars Badminton last year, a vast horde of eventing fans worldwide watched especially closely. The great rider, whose two Badminton wins (2004 and 2015) sit atop a record 14 CCI5* victories, had hinted – but not confirmed – that this year’s event would be his last.
What followed was a masterclass in cross-country performance as the 55-year-old guided Amanda Gould’s mare Grafennacht smoothly round the track, coming home with just 2.4 time-faults. That put the pair into second place overnight, less than three penalties off the lead.
In characteristically self-deprecating fashion, William gave full credit to Grafennacht: “She could have gone round there in a headcollar,” he said.
It meant that the “impossible dream” was well and truly alive: would this supreme horseman, who had been such a towering figure in the global eventing world for three decades, crown his career with one more stunning success?
In fact, the fairytale didn’t quite come true –they so rarely do – and William and Grafennacht slipped down the order to a still-respectable 13th. William confirmed that he was, while not completely retiring from the sport he loved, stepping down from the top levels, and there would be no more Badmintons, no more Burghleys – where he is the winning-most rider, with six titles – and no more British teams.
2024 – Grafennacht
1989 – Steadfast
It will take a long time, however, for our memories of William Fox-Pitt to fade. From his first Badminton in 1989 aged 20, riding Steadfast, owned by his mother Marietta to his 24th and final completion in 2024 on Grafennacht, his 35-year career spans an extraordinary period of change and development in eventing. William’s first Badminton win came in 2004 – the penultimate running of the event in “long format”, with roads and tracks and steeplechase – on the brilliant, irrepressibly cheeky Tamarillo (owned by The Honourable Mrs Mary Guinness), with whom he represented Britain at the Athens Olympics a few months later.
His second Badminton triumph was also closely tied to an Olympics – and triggered one of the most remarkable sports stories of the decade. Riding Chris Stone’s chestnut stallion Chilli Morning, William led throughout to finish on his dressage score and score an emphatic and very popular victory. However, in October 2015, William suffered a serious head injury while competing in France, and for a while his future looked bleak indeed. But, defying belief, William returned to riding and then competing the following spring, which led to he and Chilli Morning going to Rio 2016 for Britain. Despite numerous team and individual medals at World and European Championships – and three Olympic team medals from his five Games –his Olympic luck has never quite been in. William and “Chilli” were in pole position after dressage, but a split-second of indecision led to a run-out across country, and the individual gold medal he so richly deserved has always remained elusive.
Nevertheless, it has been a record-breaking career: those 14 CCI5* wins, 64 international victories across the levels, 18 Championship appearances for Britain, and countless examples of outstanding horsemanship and sportsmanship. We will miss his riding, his generosity with advice to other competitors, his forthright, articulate and entertaining interviews, his kindness, and his absolutely transparent love of horses and of eventing. His adored family – TV presenter wife Alice and children Oliver, Thomas, Chloe and Emily – have been an integral part of eventing and of Badminton, too, and, while we are sure we will see all of them here for many years to come, it will never quite feel the same without William’s name on the start-list.
2015 – Chilli Morning
2004 – Tamarillo

The Three-Day Event
THE THREE-DAY EVENT, or Concours Complet (Complete Competition) as it is known in French, is a comprehensive test of all-round ability of horse and rider. It was originally a military event, drawing on the requirements for a top-class officer’s charger – steadiness on parade, the ability to cross the countryside fast in battle, and to be fit and tough enough to continue with duties after a strenuous day
Over the past 50 years all the tests have become more demanding technically with much less emphasis being placed on endurance or suitability for battle! The ability of the rider is now probably more important than the qualities of the horse, but to succeed both must be highly trained in all three tests. The marks are cumulative and elimination in any one test brings elimination from the whole competition. The horse and rider with the lowest number of penalties at the end is the winner
Dressage Test
To ride a supremely fit horse, bursting with energy, is no easy task, when calmness and precision are required. The judges (Ground Jury) are looking for fluency, balance, suppleness, a steady outline and free-forward movement. Judging is inevitably a subjective art, but regular training and experience enable judges to agree on the essentials. One of the judges will be placed on the long side of the arena, to give a very different angle of view, which can easily affect the marks awarded. This year Xavier Le Sauce will be at ‘C’, Nick Burton at ‘H’ and Robert Stevenson at ‘B’. The most important requirements for each movement are shown in the printed test below. Each movement is marked out of 10 (the movement number and mark being displayed on the scoreboard). The judges’ marks are averaged and shown as a percentage, to keep them in balance with the cross-country and show jumping.

6On the ¾ line Between D and F Shoulder-in left until the X & B

Top Spread 2.00m (6’6”)
Base Spread 3.00m (9’9”)
Maximum Drop 2.00m (6’6”)
Many of the fences, especially those sited in “awkward places”, are much smaller! Brush Fences may be up to 1.45m (4’9”) in height.
Unauthorised Assistance
Any intervention by a third party, whether solicited or not, with the object of facilitating the task of the Athlete or of helping their Horse, is considered unauthorised assistance and the Athlete is liable to be eliminated at the discretion of the Ground Jury Officials or spectators who draw the attention of an Athlete to a deviation from the course will be considered giving unauthorised assistance which may result in the elimination of the Athlete. Exceptions a) Whip, headgear or spectacles may be handed to an Athlete without dismounting during the Cross Country Test. b) An Athlete, after having knocked a flag at an obstacle as a consequence of a run-out, may ask the fence Judge for the flag to be repositioned, but no time will be deducted. With the support of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, Judge Jim Blurton, assisted by Bernie Tidmarsh, both top-class farriers, will examine each horse on Sunday morning. Both owner and farrier of the best shod will receive a plaque, reflecting the truth of the old saying “no foot no horse”. The judges will be looking at the condition of the feet, the making and fitting of the shoes, the nailing and position of clips.
SUNDAY 28th SEPTEMBER 2025
The 2025 Cross-Country Course
(See Map: inside front cover)
2025 is no different from other years in the fact that we are running in the opposite direction to last year We are running in the clockwise direction. We start in the main arena. It always makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end when watching the first horse of the day set off to tackle the Badminton Cross-Country.
The competitors then run through the collecting ring and down the hill to the Bloomfields Horseboxes Keeper’s Table This is probably one of the largest second fences on any course. This year it has been re-built to make it deformable. That means it will collapse if a horse banks it or hits it hard, hopefully preventing either horse or rider coming to any harm.
Then up the hill to Fence 3. The Tortworth Court Brush This is a narrow brush at the top of a steep bank. It should jump easily but get the horses ready for what is to come.
The first fence is the Spillers Starter.
1 Spillers Starter
3 Tortworth Court Brush
2 Bloomfields Horseboxes Keeper’s Table
The first combination on the course comes at Fence 4, the Savills Staircase. Under the straw arch and down two steps to the traditional Hay Wain at the bottom. It’s quite a steep descent from top to bottom. I think this is slightly easier than in previous years.
Fence 5 is the Countryside Alliance
Parallel This is the first place on the course where a decision has to be made.
Competitors can take the silver birch parallel on the angle and cut inside of the tree beyond it or stay out, get straight and play safe. There will only be a few seconds difference, but this will be the first point that you will start to see the field split between those that are thinking of prizes and those that are here to gain experience.
Now the course starts to change dramatically from that of previous years. The course sweeps across the middle of the park, towards the Agria Corners. These are two impressive corners with brush roofs. They are numbered separately in case someone messes up the first corner badly, they can take the slow route without penalties but realistically that will kiss goodbye to their chances of getting inside the time.
From here the course sweeps around the bend into the main lake area.
6/7 Agria Corners
5 Countryside Alliance Parallel
The World Horse Welfare Waterfall is a big table with water running along the top. This should jump well and allow the horses to acclimatise to the enormous crowd gathered around the lake area.
As we all know, we are going through one of the longest dry spells that we have ever had in the UK. The Lake being a natural feature is not unaffected by this so how much or indeed if any water is in it as you watch live is a matter for conjecture. All I can say, as I write, is we are working on it. The actual fences on the fast route are two very large roll tops on one stride, dropping nearly two metres over the second one and then four horse strides to a narrow brush in the water, then right and up the steep bank to another narrow brush. This will come quick and fast and will need a consummate cross-country combination to make it look easy. I think several combinations may find their Badminton dream in tatters after this fence. On the other hand, if you are leaving the Lake clear having had a good ride then your game on. There is a slow route but this will take a long time.
11AB
The Guide Dogs Cord Pile, although one of the biggest fences on the course should be a breather
Guide Dogs Cord Pile
9/10ABC MARS Lake
12AB INEOS Grenadier Sunken Road
Fence 12 is the INEOS Grenadier Sunken Road Two tall upright rails through a hollow in the ground. This fence is another deformable one which means it will collapse if hit hard. If a combination lowers a deformable fence they incur eleven penalties, which means the riders will have to really respect these fences if they want to stay in the race. The rails come at the end of a long straight gallop from the last fence which is normally somewhere that riders would really push their horses to go quickly to make up time. As any of you who ride will know or can imagine, if you totally let the handbrake off on one of these horses, they really fly but most of them will also get very strong and more than a bit rude when trying to regain control. The question here will not be can they jump the fence but will be how fast it can be jumped and not break the clip; also how far back up the track will the riders have to start setting up their horse to jump it well.
13 Strides Copse Rails
From here the combinations move across the field below Strides Copse to the big parallel in the hedgerow and then up the other side of the valley
14AB
MARS Equestrian Sustainability Bay
The MARS Equestrian Sustainability Bay is an idea that I stole from the Paris Olympics. The combinations can jump the left or right hedge at the top of the bank and then curve left or right to the hedge in the middle of the water. The right hedge on entry curves on less strides to the middle hedge so will come up faster and the exit is not as clear. The left hedge has more strides between the two elements but the angle is greater to the second element. It will be interesting to see who chooses which route.
15ABCD KBIS Chasm
The KBIS Chasm, is a log to an enormous ditch. It is not that the ditch is particularly wide but it is very deep. All combinations must jump the first two elements and then they can make a choice. Go right to the log at the top of the bank with the big drop or left to the two logs on a steep angle at the bottom of the bank. Again, they can choose which suits their horse best.
17/18 Holland Cooper Corners
16 Lime Tree Tables
From here they go to a new piece of ground between the magnificent lime trees to one or the other of the deformable tables.
The course then runs down the hill to the Holland Cooper Corners This is a very big corner over a ditch. The ditch is maximum spread at three metres. Angle and line will be all important at this fence. It is numbered as two separate numbers, 17 and 18. The ditch is the first number which allows the riders to choose to jump the ditch as a single fence and then do a circle to the alternative corner. This will obviously be much slower but should remove the risk of the run out.
The next question I think could be very influential as the LeMieux Eyelash Brushes ask all the relevant questions of a modern event horse and rider. It consists of two very angled hedges with a water filled ditch in the middle. The more angle the riders accept at the first hedge, the further to the right they will land over the ditch so the easier the last hedge will be. On the other hand, the riders have to avoid the horse running down the first hedge because they have asked for too much angle. This will really be like threading the horse through the eye of a needle.

Project Pony is an initiative which aims to identify and support up and coming young riders with a realistic ambition of competing at the top level, in particular by giving them the chance to ride elite eventing ponies.
Project Pony was born from the love of this thrilling and exhilarating sport and the desire is to give a little back by opening the door to young, determined athletes who might not otherwise get the opportunities their ability deserves. In short, Project Pony is all about giving talent a chance in the sport of eventing.
With some very exciting ponies and riders already in our team, and a number of new plans in the pipeline, we would be delighted to discuss with individuals, owners and businesses how they too could become involved.
#GivingTalentAChance
20 PEDIGREE KENNEL
From here the track sweeps out towards the house. The Pedigree Kennel should be a nice let up fence.
The Mayston Equestrian Sunken Road starts with a two metre step down into the hollow There is a small lip at the top of the step which makes the horses do a small jump off the step. This was quite influential last year as several horses had a little look at it before launching off. From here they cross the bottom of the hollow to any one of the narrow brushes on the far side. The course goes left from here so the brush on the left is quicker but narrower The one on the right is wider but slower
23AB Project Pony Brush Buckets
From here the course runs right in front of Badminton House, an amazing backdrop to any fence. Jumping right towards the front door is the Project Pony Brush Buckets Two big brush fences, the fastest route is to jump the first one on an angle, cut inside the gazebo to the second or they can choose to get a little straighter and go around the back. There will only be a few seconds difference between the two routes but every second counts if the riders are thinking of possibly winning a prize.
The Wiltshire Brewers Brush is a let-up fence. There is a stopping point just before this so if there is trouble further around the course the stopping stewards will be notified and will pull up the next horse and take its time. Then, when the issue is sorted, the stewards will restart the horse, taking another time so any horse that has to be stopped is not put at a disadvantage. The first fence after a stopping point should be one of the more straightforward ones to allow the horses to get back into a rhythm.
21AB Mayston Equestrian Sunken Road
22 Wiltshire Brewers Brush
The Chatham Eyelet is a small brush hole out of the water and the Back British Farming Hay Rack should be straight forward. By now the riders will start to get a real feel if a clear inside of the time allowed is on the cards.
26AB Equidry Huntman’s Close
The Equidry Huntsman’s Close will be a real conundrum. To play safe and take the easier route or take on the two substantial corners. The difficulty of the two corners on the straight route is the trees prevent the riders from getting a good clean approach as the flipping tree is in the way! A bit of accurate steering is needed and that’s not always easy when your horse has been galloping for nearly 10 minutes.
28ABC HorseQuest Quarry
27AB Antech Brush Mounds
The Antech Brush Mounds should be straight forward but they are big fences if your horse is getting tired.
The course then sweeps around the trees to the HorseQuest Quarry This is the last set of related fences on this year’s course. Dropping down the slope and getting straight to the first brush stump then four strides to the wall should be easy Behind the little wall is a bit of a bank up to another brush stump. It is always difficult to know how horses are going to react to being tired. With some horses it makes their stride longer and with some they get shorter. With only two strides to the stump after the wall there is not much room to adjust and the last stump is too narrow to be a long way off it. This year, the riders will really have to assess how their horse is travelling on the approach to the Quarry and if they feel the stride getting shorter, the slower route maybe the better option.
29/30 Joules Double Gates
From here they run down through the car park to the Joules Double Gates. They are nearly home. Both these gates are deformable so taking too much of a risk, going too fast and knocking one or both of them down would be very expensive. I think you will see the riders slow down and really respect these two uprights. It’s not over until you’re clear here.
From this point the end really is in sight.
The Pheasant Log back into the collecting ring needs to be respected as it’s quite big but normally jumps well and will take riders into the arena to the MARS M. We have rebuilt this fence this year to make it deformable to protect any horse that hits it hard. This will be a pleasant site for all the riders. There is no better feeling in the world than to have successfully faced one of the toughest tests of a partnership between horse and rider and prevailed. Good luck to everyone. I hope you have a great day.

Jumping Test
After an often crucial Final Horse Inspection on Sunday morning, which ensures that horses overridden or injured in any way cannot go on, the show jumping fences assume mammoth proportions in the eyes of the athletes. They are in fact small compared to Hickstead or London International Horse Show, (maximum height 1.30m), but the horse trained to gallop over fixed timber is apt to be careless over knockdown poles. The rider must above all keep his nerve – not easy towards the end with the best placed going last and the silver Badminton Horse Trials Trophy beckoning! The course is designed by International Jumping Course Designer, Kelvin Bywater

Health and Safety Policy Statement
The following statement sets out our general policy in accordance with the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
Badminton Horse Trials places great importance on the health and safety of all employees, contractors, officials, competitors, the public and all other visitors to the Trials. Every reasonable effort will be made to prevent accidents.
Badminton Horse Trials is fully committed to compliance with both the letter and the spirit of the Act and of all regulations stemming from the Act.
Badminton Horse Trials has in place a management structure that ensures that responsibility for health and safety is allocated and carried out at an appropriate level. Many of those responsible for health and safety in particular areas of the event are volunteers, but this in no way lessens either their responsibility or Badminton Horse Trials’ support for them.
Both employees and volunteers have a duty to work safely with due consideration for the health and safety of themselves and others. They must report any injury, dangerous occurrence or potentially unsafe situation at the earliest opportunity, taking steps to remedy the situation themselves if at all possible.
Employees and volunteers will be selected on the basis of competence for their particular task(s) and any appropriate training will be provided for them. Badminton Horse Trials will consult both employees and volunteers on any matter that might affect their health and safety.
Plant and equipment used during the preparation for and the duration of the event will be kept in safe condition and all users thereof must take responsibility for checking such condition.
Exhibitors, Contractors, Sub Contractors and Competitors must take particular note of the detailed requirements that apply to them. In general: Exhibitors are responsible for the safety of their own stands and the risks they may pose to people in them or nearby
On arrival all exhibitors must report to the Event Office or Site Manager’s Office where they will be advised of any special Health & Safety arrangements that affect them.
Contractors & Sub Contractors are required to observe best working practices, to comply with all legislation relevant to their business and to take all reasonable and practical steps to safeguard all those present at the Trials. All Contractors must report to the Event Office before commencing work on site, so that they can be advised how the Health & Safety arrangements will affect them.
Competitors must comply with the rules of the International and National governing bodies and with the local regulations of the Badminton Horse Trials Organisers. There will be written briefs for all competitors and also a Riders’ meeting at which arrangements concerning Health & Safety will be communicated. The Event Organisers will comply with all such regulations and guidelines themselves, including recommendations for consultation with competitors. Badminton Horse Trials has arranged for the duration of the event extensive emergency services including doctors, ambulances and veterinarians. They have access to all parts of the site and can be quickly contacted by radio. Badminton Horse Trials has arranged a comprehensive communications system for use during the event, so that unsafe situations may be reported and so that avoidance or remedial action may be undertaken. During the event, all unsafe situations must be reported to the Event Office, which acts as overall co-ordinator and will ensure that the appropriate person(s) are notified to take any action necessary Badminton Horse Trials has appointed a Safety Officer, who has overall responsibility for safety issues, reporting directly to the Event Director

LeMieux – for equestrians at every stage
Welcome to the LeMieux Grassroots Championships 2025! First introduced in 2009, this event was founded by Alex Fox, then-Chairman of British Eventing, and Lance Bradley, then-Managing Director of Mitsubishi Motors. Since its inception, the Grassroots Championships has grown to become the highlight of British Eventing’s BE90 and BE100 calendar
As equestrians, we at LeMieux know exactly how special the LeMieux Grassroots Championships are, for the challenge and excitement it offers each year
“Badminton” Grassroots competitors are overwhelmingly amateur riders who come from a huge variety of backgrounds, with diverse riding experience. What unites all entries is the keen spirit of competition and appetite for challenge that the competition brings!
To enter, horses must be classed at Grade 4 (meaning they’ve won no points awarded at Novice level and above) and to keep the Competition fair, experienced international riders are prevented from entering.
The LeMieux Grassroots Championships at British Eventing’s BE90 and BE100 levels offer a challenging cross-country course with fences at a maximum height of 90cm (3'0") and 100cm (3’3”).
‘LeMieux is proud to support the Grassroots Championships at Badminton Horse Trials. The competitors here form the backbone of eventing and are essential to the future of the sport. We’re honoured to be part of their journey and wish everyone taking part the best of luck.’ Robert LeMieux, Founder
Everyone at LeMieux wishes all LeMieux Grassroots Championship competitors and their support teams good luck for what promises to be a challenging and exciting experience. Our huge thanks go to all the officials and volunteers who give their valuable time to support the Championships. We expect to see some fierce competition and celebrate the worthy winners.
The very best of luck to all competitors!

Horses in Society
MARS Badminton Horse Trials provides the perfect platform for everyone who loves horses, whether you compete at a professional level or ride recreationally, to help showcase best practice equestrianism and to help demonstrate all the positives to those who may not be aware of the stringency that exists in terms of regulation and safeguarding; or the strength of the bond that exists between horses and those who own, ride and care for them.
In 2024 a unique research project was undertaken that was funded through a grant from the Racing Foundation, along with support from other equestrian organisations, and coordinated by World Horse Welfare. The aim was to understand what the public currently think about equestrianism in the UK and the drivers behind public trust and acceptance of horse sport.
The importance of how we communicate, both within the sport and with the wider public, came through strongly in the recommendations. This is not surprising given the changing views of society in a rapidly changing world. However, the recommendations were clear that communications had to reflect actions, and that as a sector we need to be more proactively transparent, accountable and responsive to the public – and demonstrate our ethical values towards horses. So it is vital that we are authentic in all our communications, not least because our understanding of what we need to do to provide our horses with a good life is advancing all the time.
Actions will always speak louder than words and to this end the BEF Charter for the Horse is an excellent focal point and to help bring this to life, here are three actions for all of us to consider. Firstly, consider whether you are providing your horse with the 3Fs (of friends, freedom and forage) to the fullest extent possible in their daily management. Secondly, ensure you have a good understanding of how horses learn, and that you apply this, as this is fundamental to the ethical training and care of our horses. And thirdly, learn to understand what your horse is telling you through their behaviour as this goes to the heart of good horsemanship.
So, as horse lovers, we need to show competence, humanity and integrity in all our communications, in order to build trust, which in turn will help increase acceptance of horses in all sports.
Strong, transparent, empathetic communication is critical. This might well be on your social media channels but also in your everyday dealings and most importantly with non-riding friends and family who may not have had the opportunity to interact with horses.
Collectively, we can all play a part in creating a more responsible, compassionate and inclusive equestrian community, thereby helping to improve the lives of horses everywhere and to strengthen the extent to which the public trusts, accepts and recognises the social good horses bring to society
MARS Badminton Horse Trials are grateful to the British Horse Society and World Horse Welfare for their contribution to this article.
Young Event Horse Series
Wednesday, 7th May – 8.30am
The Arena is on the Grassroots site – see Map page 89
Judges: Sue Baxter, Helen West, Nick Collins
Chief Steward: Jane Milligan
Jumping Course Designer: John Bedford
The aim of the Burghley Young Event Horse Series is to encourage riders, trainers and breeders to produce and present the type of young horse which potentially has the attributes needed to develop into a world-class three-day event horse.
Horses eligible to compete in the 2025 Burghley Young Event Horse Series are based on year of birth: 4 year olds – foaled in 2021; 5 year olds – foaled in 2020.
Judging
Judges are looking for potential for the future; an athletic, loose moving horse with a promising jumping technique and attitude, which, with effective training will develop physically and mentally into a world class event horse.
The winner of the class is that with the highest overall combined mark from four sections:
Dressage Phase
(35 marks)
Unlike a normal dressage test, judges are not assessing the current state of training and marks are not given for individual movements. Judges will have to weigh up the influence of the rider; a good rider may present a well-balanced, smooth test from perhaps a moderate, unscopey horse whereas a less skilled rider may not make a good horse’s attributes obvious. However, judges are reminded that it is the horse and not the rider’s attributes being evaluated.
The idea is to find horses with three correct, scopey and regular gaits, whilst considering the attributes for potential longevity and performance as a world class event horse.
Jumping Phase
(40 marks)
Judges are looking for a bold athletic horse with good technique. A horse with these qualities, should not necessarily be penalised for knocking down one fence (or a four-year-old having one refusal), providing they demonstrate they react positively afterwards. Especially in the early part of the season, four-year-olds may find it easier to jump some fences out of trot. Notwithstanding; 3 cumulative refusals or a fall of horse or rider must result in elimination.
Potential to lengthen stride (5 marks)
Immediately after the jumping horses are required to show lengthening of strides in canter, the judges are looking for the qualities in a horse’s potential to gallop in the future, with further maturity and development in their training
Suitability & Type (20 marks)
Judges are looking for horses with the attributes to withstand the demands of the sport in terms of soundness, speed and stamina. Lack of quality and other defects which might indicate limited stamina or speed should be penalised, even though the horse may be a nice dressage or show jumping prospect. However, a lack of size should not be held against him/her.
Qualifiers
One horse per 12 starters at today’s event will qualify for the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse Final at Burghley Horse Trials on Friday 6th September.

FEI Code of Conduct for the Welfare of the Horse
The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) expects all those involved in the international equestrian sport to adhere to the FEI’s Code of Conduct and to acknowledge and accept that at all times the welfare of the horse must be paramount and must never be subordinated to competitive or commercial influences.
1. At all stages during the preparation and training of the competition horses, welfare must take precedence over all other demands. This includes good horse management, training methods, farriery and tack, and transportation.
2. Horses and athletes must be fit, competent and in good health before they are allowed to compete. This encompasses medication use, surgical procedures that threaten welfare or safety, pregnancy in mares, and misuse of aids.
3. Events must not prejudice horse welfare. This involves paying careful attention to the competition areas, ground surfaces, weather conditions, stabling, site safety and fitness of the horse for onward travel after the event.
4. Every effort must be made to ensure that horses receive proper attention after they have competed and that they are treated humanely when their competition careers are over. This covers proper veterinary care, competition injuries, euthanasia and retirement.
5. The FEI urges all involved with the sport to attain the highest levels of education in their areas of expertise.
The long version of this Code can be obtained from the Fédération Equestre Internationale, HM King Hussein I Building, Chemin de la Joliette 8, 1006 Lausanne, Switzerland. Tel: +41 21 310 47 47. The Code is available in English.
The Code is also available on the FEI’s website: https://inside.fei.org/fei/regulations/general-rules
