Last year Badminton returned following two years of cancellation due to Covid. It was a very successful year and walking around the course and the trade stands there was a palpable sense of sheer joy from everyone that their favourite weekend of the year was back.
This year of course the event falls on the same weekend as The Coronation. This will be another cause for celebration, and all will be shown on the large screens on the Saturday. On Sunday, our talented athletes will set out on the cross-country course, then on the final day we will find out who will be crowned the winner, in this very historic year.
I am delighted that Mars Equestrian are again with us as our Presenting Partner, with Lightsource bp as an Official Partner. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the other supporting sponsors, owners, riders, trade stands, contractors, officials, volunteers and all who attend without whose support the Event would not be possible.

While the relationship between the TD and the Organisers should always be a partnership, in the last resort he has the authority to insist on changes.
Until the moment the competition starts, the TD has sole authority. Thereafter he acts as an expert adviser to the Ground Jury and will continue to assist both Organisers and Competitors.
The Ground Jury are in control of the competition once it starts. They judge the dressage and show jumping, while on the cross-country day they observe all judging and timekeeping, adjudicate all objections and queries and are finally responsible for the correction of any scores.
They also conduct the First and Final Horse Inspections, together with the Veterinary Delegate, acting as a Panel, and are responsible for excluding any horse who in their opinion is not fit to take part. Sunday 7th May – 10.45am – Main Arena
A high-speed dash, a blur of coloured skills, flying manes and tails, and the roar of the crowd and the excitement of a day at the races condensed into Shetland Pony size.
The Shetland Pony Grand National is a fabulous display of ponies racing over miniature Steeplechase fences similar to the ones on a racecourse. A concept initially brought to life by the famous BBC Equestrian Commentator, the late Raymond Brooks-Ward.

All the children who take part are aged 8-14 years and have to be less than 5ft in height. For more information about Shetland Pony Grand National, visit: www.shetlandponygrandnational.net or Facebook.

THE THREE-DAY EVENT, or Concours Complet (Complete Competition) as it is known in French, is a comprehensive test of all-round ability of horse and rider It was originally a military event, drawing on the requirements for a top-class officer’s charger – steadiness on parade, the ability to cross the countryside fast in battle, and to be fit and tough enough to continue with duties after a strenuous day
Over the past 50 years all the tests have become more demanding technically with much less emphasis being placed on endurance or suitability for battle! The ability of the rider is now probably more important than the qualities of the horse, but to succeed both must be highly trained in all three tests. The marks are cumulative and elimination in any one test brings elimination from the whole competition. The horse and rider with the lowest number of penalties at the end is the winner
To ride a supremely fit horse, bursting with energy, is no easy task, when calmness and precision are required. The judges (Ground Jury) are looking for fluency, balance, suppleness, a steady outline and free-forward movement. Judging is inevitably a subjective art, but regular training and experience enable judges to agree on the essentials. One of the judges will be placed on the long side of the arena, to give a very different angle of view, which can easily affect the marks awarded. This year Angela Tucker will be at ‘C’, Xavier Le Sauce at ‘H’ and Andrew Bennie at ‘B’. The most important requirements for each movement are shown in the printed test below Each movement is marked out of 10 (the movement number and mark being displayed on the scoreboard). The judges’ marks are averaged and shown as a percentage, to keep them in balance with the cross-country and show jumping.
We are delighted to present International Dressage rider and trainer Hayley Watson-Greaves with her horse Rubins Nite. Hayley and Rubins Nite have represented our country many times – Reserve for the Rio Olympics, National Dressage Champion, and the Paris World Cup Dressage to Music Finals. At the Addington CDI in March this year, Horse and Hound featured Rubins Nite as AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND! The pair were third in very top company in the Freestyle – a horse at 19 – not only surviving but thriving!
Sarah Stewart works with Hayley and rides Djoe Dimaggio, a very promising 9 year old competing at Advanced Medium. In his first year of Premier Leagues and High Profile shows, really making his mark –one to watch on his way up the ladder.
Not to be missed!
The finally measured distance and optimum time will be announced at the Competitors Briefing.

With the support of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, Judge Phillip Martin, himself a top-class farrier, will examine each horse on Sunday morning. Both owner and farrier of the best shod will receive a plaque, reflecting the truth of the old saying “no foot no horse”. The judge will be looking at the condition of the feet, the making and fitting of the shoes, the nailing and position of clips.
We have changed a lot from last year’s course. Not only have we changed direction to run the course clockwise but also the flavour of the course. This year’s course is all about holding a line and adjustability A lot more jumping on acute angles and quick-thinking adjustments to distances and stride length are going to be needed this year if the riders are going to take on the Badminton 2023 track and be successful. We also have a new feature rail and step into a hollow which will provide a bit more proper cross-country terrain and a whole new test for both horses and riders.
We start as always with the Spillers Starter in the main arena. The first fence is always a horse friendly fence designed to give a good jump and settle the nerves.
The Bloomfields Horseboxes
Keepers Table is a big table over the keepers ditch. It’s a big open ditch, as the second fence, but it has always jumped well and is a great way to get both horse and rider focused and on their A game early on.
The Tortworth Hotel Brush sits at the top of a bank after a bit of undulating ground. This should jump well, slopes like this help pick the horses up almost like a trampoline in front of the obstacle.
The Savills Staircase is the same as it was in 2019 but I don’t expect many of the horses will remember it from then. A big table followed by two steps with only 3 meters between them to another big table. A real attacking fence. The horses have to be quick on their feet down the steps. I don’t expect any problems here because it is obvious what the question is to the horses but I do expect it to be a wakeup call to many that they are now at a 5 star
The Joules Coronation Corral is two big upright gates which can be jumped on an angle on the inside of a pagoda, or you can jump them straight, which is obviously less risky by going around the pagoda but this will take an extra few seconds.
These like many other fences on the course this year have a MIM hinge and clip on them. This is a device that allows the fence to collapse if hit too hard. If a horse hits the fence and breaks the clip thus activating the hinge allowing the fence to fall, the rider will receive 11 penalties to add to their score.
The Countryside Alliance Stick Pile has just one effort when going the straightway which is a really big log pile. There is a way to jump two smaller log piles which will only take a few seconds longer but you will have the extra effort of two fences rather than one.

The Air Ambulances UK Bullfinch is a big old traditional fence that you would have seen frequently on courses in the 70s and early 80s. Although we do not see these fences so regularly on modern courses it still provides a valuable test of braveness and scope.

The Lightsource bp Hollow is a new fence and indeed a new area for 2023. We have put a step into the old boundary ditch then we have built an upright rail just 3 meters (bounce distance) in front of that. To finish it off I have placed a little narrow brush at the top of the slope out of the hollow The key to this will be getting to the rail at the right speed and in the right place to allow the horses to see their way over the narrow brush.
Izusu 4 bar 4 9
Izusu 4 bar 4 is another old traditional type of cross-country fence. Just a big set of rails to gallop at. This should give the riders a great feeling.

The Mars Equestrian Sustainability Bay is a big brush log that was used last year going into the main lake, followed on by three or maybe four horse strides to a little angled log. Although the A element is big, the riders will need to control their desire to push on at this as the little log could come up very quickly and a little fly by is very much on the cards here.
The Holland Cooper Owl Hole is a big imposing fence. The step is a full 1.20m high with a bounce over the full brush owl hole with a drop on the landing side. It should have a sign about 20 meters before it saying kick on from here.
The KBIS Brush Boxes is in contrast to the fence before because this is really about accuracy on the line. To go the straightway the riders will have to set the line for the horse, taking the inside of the tree to jump the first brush on an acute angle which should put them on a line to pop over the little ditch on and then put two or three strides up to the final brush. There is a slow route here, but it is very slow.
Footbridge 14
This should jump easily this year. Although the Footbridge is a big fence there is a long downhill gallop to it which should see the horses jumping this with no problems.

Ros Canter -2018 World Champion
The Lightsource bp Pond has two direct routes and a slower route. The main solar panel sits on a bank with a bit of a drop on the landing side. There is then a choice of two direct routes out. The B panel on the right is up a small bank to jump on a very steep angle and the B panel on the left is up a steeper bank but with less angle. The choice here is personal as to which the rider thinks their horse will prefer
The LeMieux Mound is an upright set of plank rails at the top of a steep mound. You need a good punchy canter up here to jump the rails then plenty of control through the hollow to get a good line to the big brush on the way out. This is not as difficult as some fences we have had here in the past but it’s still a big effort.
The Mars M Tables is a great opportunity for a good photo in front of the house. The giant M is a set up fence before the two big tables on a four-stride right hand turn. I don’t think these will be influential, but it will be another big energy sapping effort and as I am writing this, it is still raining and that could be very important.
Project Pony is an initiative which aims to identify and support up and coming young riders with a realistic ambition of competing at the top level, in particular by giving them the chance to ride elite eventing ponies.
Project Pony was born from the love of this thrilling and exhilarating sport and the desire is to give a little back by opening the door to young, determined athletes who might not otherwise get the opportunities their ability deserves. In short, Project Pony is all about giving talent a chance in the sport of eventing.
With some very exciting ponies and riders already in our team, and a number of new plans in the pipeline, we would be delighted to discuss with individuals, owners and businesses how they too could become involved.

The World Horse Welfare Jetty has been here for three years now and always looks fantastic with the sun glinting off the water that runs along the top. Let’s hope it’s the same this week.
The Badminton Lake has this year taken on a new look. There is a big corner 30 meters or so before an upright set of natural rails with a big drop into the water, followed by another corner in the water One of the crucial things to know about this fence is the rails into the water are MIM clipped, so they will break if a horse leaves a leg on them. The first corner is enormous but has jumped well when we have used it in other jumps. It is a sort of set up fence to the rails. The riders will need to collect their horses together in to a nice short canter, then jump the rails with plenty of energy. The 90% turn before the rails should help set up the canter. Then they go in a straight line to the big corner in the water. There is a slower route to this, but the problem is still the same at the rails. A very good show jumping canter is needed for both the quick and slow route rails into the water It just depends if you prefer the big drop or the downhill rails with a more extreme angle to the corner. There is also a slow route to the corner in the water, but this route will take a while.
The Project Pony Splash is another dip through the water but with a really inviting brush out. This should be a simple jump.
The Beaufort Brush Box is a big straight forward fence. It will be here, as the horses start the gentle climb to Huntsmans Close, that the riders will be starting to assess how much energy their horses have got left and making a plan to get home.
The Voltaire Design Huntsmans Close has two big open rail corners this year. They are both 90% corners with quite a few strides in between. They would hardly be worthy of 5 star status if they were at the start of the course when the horses were fresh but after nearly 10 minutes of galloping they could be a problem as they again have a MIM clip so a good jump is needed at both. There is a nice slow route here and we might see some taking this just to get home.
The Jubilee Clump Brush has been used before but only as the second element of a combination. This time it stands by itself Imagine your galloping with only seven fences between you and the finish but every second counts if your going to get placed, do you take the risk and go inside the tree or take 7 seconds more and go around. I’m sure some will live to regret whichever decision they make.
The HorseQuest Quarry is the two walls on the banks of the old quarry It has been jumped many times in its current form, but with a steep slope down after the first wall and steep climb up to the second it is not to be underestimated. There is a slow route here as well, but I can’t see many taking it as it is a long way around.
The Rolex Pheasant Log has been used a few times before on the road crossing before the arena. It is a maximum height log that has to be taken on a bit of an angle but has jumped well in the past.
The Brewers Drays are two plank parallels. Again, these are MIM clipped so will invoke 11 penalties if hit so hard that the fence collapses. I have gone to this kind of fence several times in the last part of this course. I want to make sure that the riders are really staying focused. Taking time and making sure they don’t leave their Badminton clear on the third last fence.
The Coronation Finale has moved this year. We have moved it from its traditional place on the turn in the middle of the arena to just after the entrance to the arena, almost parallel to the first fence. It will give the horses a bit more time to pull up before getting to the collecting ring.
This year’s course is a very different to last year’s package. I think it is more technical than last year and we have used a lot more deformable technology I wish all the riders and horses the best of luck. I hope everyone enjoys the challenge I have set as much as I enjoyed designing it.
After an often crucial Final Horse Inspection on Monday morning, which ensures that horses overridden or injured in any way cannot go on, the show jumping fences assume mammoth proportions in the eyes of the riders. They are in fact small compared to Hickstead or Olympia, (maximum height 1.45m), but the horse trained to gallop over fixed timber is apt to be careless over knockdown poles. The rider must above all keep his nerve – not easy towards the end with the best placed going last and the silver Badminton Horse Trials Trophy beckoning! The course is designed by International Jumping Course Designer, Kelvin Bywater
Eventing show jumping penalties are in line with the scale used in “pure” show jumping. Knocking down an obstacle

The following statement sets out our general policy in accordance with the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
Badminton Horse Trials places great importance on the health and safety of all employees, contractors, officials, competitors, the public and all other visitors to the Trials. Every reasonable effort will be made to prevent accidents.
Badminton Horse Trials is fully committed to compliance with both the letter and the spirit of the Act and of all regulations stemming from the Act.
Badminton Horse Trials has in place a management structure that ensures that responsibility for health and safety is allocated and carried out at an appropriate level. Many of those responsible for health and safety in particular areas of the event are volunteers, but this in no way lessens either their responsibility or Badminton Horse Trials’ support for them.
Both employees and volunteers have a duty to work safely with due consideration for the health and safety of themselves and others. They must report any injury, dangerous occurrence or potentially unsafe situation at the earliest opportunity, taking steps to remedy the situation themselves if at all possible.
Employees and volunteers will be selected on the basis of competence for their particular task(s) and any appropriate training will be provided for them. Badminton Horse Trials will consult both employees and volunteers on any matter that might affect their health and safety.
Plant and equipment used during the preparation for and the duration of the event will be kept in safe condition and all users thereof must take responsibility for checking such condition.
Exhibitors, Contractors, Sub Contractors and Competitors must take particular note of the detailed requirements that apply to them. In general: Exhibitors are responsible for the safety of their own stands and the risks they may pose to people in them or nearby
On arrival all exhibitors must report to the Event Office or Site Manager’s Office where they will be advised of any special Health & Safety arrangements that affect them.
Contractors & Sub Contractors are required to observe best working practices, to comply with all legislation relevant to their business and to take all reasonable and practical steps to safeguard all those present at the Trials. All Contractors must report to the Event Office before commencing work on site, so that they can be advised how the Health & Safety arrangements will affect them.
Competitors must comply with the rules of the International and National governing bodies and with the local regulations of the Badminton Horse Trials Organisers. There will be written briefs for all competitors and also a Riders’ meeting at which arrangements concerning Health & Safety will be communicated. The Event Organisers will comply with all such regulations and guidelines themselves, including recommendations for consultation with competitors. Badminton Horse Trials has arranged for the duration of the event extensive emergency services including doctors, ambulances and veterinarians. They have access to all parts of the site and can be quickly contacted by radio. Badminton Horse Trials has arranged a comprehensive communications system for use during the event, so that unsafe situations may be reported and so that avoidance or remedial action may be undertaken. During the event, all unsafe situations must be reported to the Event Office, which acts as overall co-ordinator and will ensure that the appropriate person(s) are notified to take any action necessary Badminton Horse Trials has appointed a Safety Officer, who has overall responsibility for safety issues, reporting directly to the Event Director
JANE TUCKWELL, Event Director, May 2023This year we welcome Voltaire Design as the sponsor of this very special Grassroots Championships and how lucky we are to have them on board. It is wonderful for those competing throughout each year at BE90 and BE100 level to have the challenge to aim for these Championships.
This competition has gone from strength to strength since the idea of the then Chairman of British Eventing Alex Fox and the then Managing Director of Mitsubishi Motors, Lance Bradley. Lance heard on the radio about a football competition for youngsters promoted by Alan Shearer for which the final is at Wembley on the day of the FA Cup Final and thought ‘why can’t we do something similar at Badminton’?! The rest is history.
Eventing on a national level in Great Britain takes place with a wide range of different levels, ranging from Advanced at the top to BE80. The Advanced, Intermediate and Novice levels have their Championships and this constitutes the Festival of Eventing at Gatcombe Park every August.
The Championships here cater for the two levels of BE100 and BE90 (“BE” being British Eventing). The 100 and 90 numbers signify the maximum height of cross country fences, i.e. 100cm (3’3”) and 90cm (3’0”) respectively. In order to enter these classes initially, horses have to be Grade 4 (this means they have won no points, which are awarded at Novice level and above). There are also restrictions in place that prevent experienced international riders competing in these Championships.
Competitors here at Badminton come from a huge variety of backgrounds and have varied riding experience, they are overwhelmingly ‘amateur’ riders.
We wish all the Voltaire Design Grassroots Championships competitors, together with their connections, the very best of luck and a happy experience during their time at Badminton 2023 and what a special moment it will be for the two winners in this the Coronation year. A big “thank you” too to all those officials and volunteers who give their time to support these Championships.

Thursday 4th May – 9.00am
Judges: Nick Burton, Roland Fernyhough, Hopper Cavendish
Chief Steward: Jane Milligan
Jumping Course Designer: Nathan Farrell
The aim of the Burghley Young Event Horse Series is to encourage riders, trainers and breeders to produce and present the type of young horse which potentially has the attributes needed to develop into a world-class three-day event horse.
Horses eligible to compete in the 2023 Burghley Young Event Horse Series are based on year of birth: 4 year olds - foaled in 2019; 5 year olds - foaled in 2018.
Judges are looking for potential for the future; an athletic, loose moving horse with a promising jumping technique and attitude, which, with effective training will develop physically and mentally into a world class event horse.
The winner of the class is that with the highest overall combined mark from four sections:
Dressage Phase (35 marks)
Unlike a normal dressage test, judges are not assessing the current state of training and marks are not given for individual movements. Judges will have to weigh up the influence of the rider; a good rider may present a well-balanced, smooth test from perhaps a moderate, unscopey horse whereas a less skilled rider may not make a good horse’s attributes obvious. However, judges are reminded that it is the horse and not the rider’s attributes being evaluated.
The idea is to find horses with three correct, scopey and regular gaits, whilst considering the attributes for potential longevity and performance as a world class event horse.
Judges are looking for a bold athletic horse with good technique. A horse with these qualities, should not necessarily be penalised for knocking down one fence (or a four-year-old having one refusal), providing they demonstrate they react positively afterwards. Especially in the early part of the season, four-year-olds may find it easier to jump some fences out of trot. Notwithstanding; 3 cumulative refusals or a fall of horse or rider must result in elimination.
marks)
Immediately after the jumping horses are required to show lengthening of strides in canter, the judges are looking for the qualities in a horse’s potential to gallop in the future, with further maturity and development in their training
marks)
Judges are looking for horses with the attributes to withstand the demands of the sport in terms of soundness, speed and stamina. Lack of quality and other defects which might indicate limited stamina or speed should be penalised, even though the horse may be a nice dressage or show jumping prospect. However, a lack of size should not be held against him/her
One horse per 12 starters at today’s event will qualify for the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse
Final at Burghley Horse Trials on Friday 1st September

The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) expects all those involved in the international equestrian sport to adhere to the FEI’s Code of Conduct and to acknowledge and accept that at all times the welfare of the horse must be paramount and must never be subordinated to competitive or commercial influences.
1. At all stages during the preparation and training of the competition horses, welfare must take precedence over all other demands. This includes good horse management, training methods, farriery and tack, and transportation.
2. Horses and athletes must be fit, competent and in good health before they are allowed to compete. This encompasses medication use, surgical procedures that threaten welfare or safety, pregnancy in mares, and misuse of aids.
3. Events must not prejudice horse welfare. This involves paying careful attention to the competition areas, ground surfaces, weather conditions, stabling, site safety and fitness of the horse for onward travel after the event.
4. Every effort must be made to ensure that horses receive proper attention after they have competed and that they are treated humanely when their competition careers are over. This covers proper veterinary care, competition injuries, euthanasia and retirement.
5. The FEI urges all involved with the sport to attain the highest levels of education in their areas of expertise.
The long version of this Code can be obtained from the Fédération Equestre Internationale, HM King Hussein I Building, Chemin de la Joliette 8, 1006 Lausanne, Switzerland. Tel: +41 21 310 47 47.
The Code is available in English.
The Code is also available on the FEI’s website: https://inside.fei.org/fei/regulations/general-rules
