WELCOME TO AYR RACECOURSE

Welcome to Ayr Racecourse for the second of our jumps meeting of 2026. Whether you are a first time racegoer or a seasoned racing enthusiast, I hope you have an enjoyable experience with us today. I’d like to thank our owners and trainers for choosing to run their horses here today and I wish all connections the very best of luck and hope that you have a successful day. Todays racing has a real broad mix to whet our appetites including a Mares only Novice Hurdle in the second race and a Class 3 Novice Chase with some future stars featuring over the shorter distance of 2 miles. Our Jumps season of course culminates in the Coral Scottish Grand National weekend on 17/18 April it’s the biggest jumps meeting in Scotland and this year again will very much be a Premier fixture. Who can forget last year with the Red Devils parachute display team on the Saturday and indeed Willie Mullins essentially winning the trainers title as a result of prevailing in the Scottish National Please feel free to visit Western House Hotel after racing where Scott Nicol plays his live acoustic set from 4pm till 7pm. The next meeting is on Thursday 29 January and we look forward to welcoming you back then. I wish you and a safe journey home and hope to see you back at Ayr soon.

Next Twist and Triple Crown Ted both arrive on the back of comprehensive wins and are entitled to respect under their penalties, but the vote goes to BRAS D’OR. David Pipe’s charge made a pleasing start to life over hurdles at Cheltenham and was far from disgraced in behind the now 130-rated Un Sens A La Vie at Ludlow next time. With less on his plate, he can shed the maiden tag. Kilnesare Flight is well worth a second look too.

GREAT BRITISH BONUS SCHEME

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly. And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - DEREK FOX The dual Grand National winning jockey shares the Lucinda Russell/Michael Scudamore rides with Patrick Wadge and several conditional jockeys whose claims can be utilised when required but the Irishman continues to be number one at the MIlnathhort yard and is tied with 3-times champion Brian Hughes at the top of the standings here at Ayr. Fox’s 30 winners over the past 5 seasons is level with Hughes before today’s 4 rides, one ahead of the injured Danny McMenamin and 2 clear of Sean Quinlan. The rider was out of luck here on January 2 but Triple Crown Ted will have plenty of supporters at 12.48 and course and distance winner Kelvin Forlonge could defy a 6lbs rise at 1.48 before Big John Wayne makes its chasing debut at 2.18.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - OLLY MURPHY Murphy has two key runners here at Ayr today with Fingle Bridge in the Class 3 Novices’ Chase at 2.18 and Next Twist in the opening Novices’ Hurdle at 12.48 and both of his runners are set to be ridden by champion jockey Sean Bowen. Last month’s Welsh Grand National winning pilot has enjoyed excellent fortunes at Ayr this season with a 4-timer at our surviving December meeting and a double at our New Year fixture 10 days ago. Murphy continues to provide Bowen with a huge array of jumping talent as both men continue to progress up the training and riding ranks and both Southwell scorer Next Twist and Uttoxeter match winner Fingle Bridge look serious horses for both today and the rest of the season.

A confident vote goes to KELVIN FORLONGE, who made a mockery of his opening mark to score over C&D at the start of December. He was raised 6lb for that performance, but conditions might not be too dissimilar here. He’s completely unexposed at this sort of trip and is expected to take another step forward. Irish raider Gather Yourself merits the utmost respect in the hands of Sean Bowen, while Shoeshine Boy wouldn’t be without a chance if putting a recent fall behind him.

An interesting clash between FINGLE BRIDGE and Meetmebythesea, with preference for the former. Olly Murphy’s gelding was unbeaten over hurdles, with a Listed success at Exeter the highlight, especially given how the form has worked out. He returned to the same venue for his chasing bow when second to Lulamba before being left alone in a match at Uttoxeter and this appeals as a decent opportunity to continue his progression. Meetmebythesea was also a useful hurdler who scored on his chasing debut at Wetherby, while Big John Wayne looks the pick of the remainder.

Torosay is better judged on her C&D second rather than her subsequent Carlisle disappointment and the handicapper has aided her cause by dropping her 3lb. Jirko was no match for an easy winner here at the beginning of last month and remains capable of better, but the vote goes to chasing debutant BIG ZOUK. Nicky Richards’ gelding won a point-to-point in February 2024 and the switch to fences can bring about the improvement required.

A switch to more positive tactics saw HE’S BRESILIAN make all in a maiden hurdle at Newcastle. The six-year-old returns to handicap company off what looks a fair mark and a similar approach may see him follow up. Tread Softly Now arrives on the back of a close-up second at Kelso and is feared most, for all that a 4lb higher rating demands more. Dance Thief could also feature after an encouraging fifth-placed reappearance over C&D.

Having had something in hand when making a successful Rules bow over track and trip, COCONUT MAN may prove tough to crack. Reopposing runner-up Kingsman Mail is entitled to improve for that experience and should give another good account, although a bigger danger may emerge in the shape of winning pointer Mcelhattan. Donald McCain has his string in good order and market support for his Yeats gelding would be interesting.
