Ayr Racecard - Thursday 18th September

Page 1

WELCOME to the opening day of the Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup Festival and what promises to be an excellent afternoon’s racing and an appetiser for the action that follows on Friday and Saturday

I am delighted to welcome Ladbrokes as sponsors of the Festival once again and everyone at Ayr Racecourse is looking forward to working with this prestigious brand.

I should wish to take this opportunity to thank all owners and trainers for choosing to participate at Ayr today and I wish them the best of luck. The Ayr Racecourse Racing Club has its two runners Penelope’s Sister and Sophiesticate both running today and I hope all of the lucky representatives have a great experience.

Sponsors are vitally important and in addition to Ladbrokes we thank Brewin Dolphin, Tennent’s Lager, The European Breeders Fund, The Mack Family and Almins Vantage/Lallemand Magniva Agricultural Feeds for their support of today’s card.

We have eight races today including an 18 runner five furlong sprint, a talented fillies race and the feature race today is the Ladbrokes Free Bet At Ayr Kilkerran Cup in which there is a field of 13 highly talented runners which should prove to be exceptionally competitive.

I’d like to thank the team at Ayr for their sterling work and dedication to ensure this Festival runs smoothly and is a great success.

Live entertainment follows the last race with Sneaky Treacle in the PR suite and Davie Galloway provides the music in Western House.

I hope you all have an enjoyable and successful Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup Festival.

Don’t forget our next meeting...

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

Brando was the winner of the Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday, 17th September, 2016.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - LAUREN YOUNG

Jim Goldie’s teenage apprentice had the biggest win of her short career last Saturday when the trainer’s 3-times Ayr winner Eternal Sunshine followed up back-to-back wins at Thirsk by landing the £100,000 Portland Handicap at Doncaster That 5-year record here at Ayr (above) only actually covers the 2024 and 2025 seasons as Young’s career has taken off this season thanks to the full-backing of her prolific winning boss Goldie in a variety of races against apprentices and senior jockeys. Young’s big win at Doncaster was her 13th success from just 72 rides in this, her breakthrough season, and she’ll be looking to improve that superb 14% strike-rate with 4 rides on today’s card, including Sophiesticate for the Ayr Racecourse Members Club at 3.15

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - TIM EASTERBY

The Easterby yard looks set for a busy 3 days here at Ayr and the trainer couldn’t be in much better form after saddling 6 winners in ONE DAY last Tuesday and rounding off the week by sending out the winner of the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster with his flying juvenile Revival Power The Yorkshire trainer has enjoyed plenty of success in the Silver and Bronze Cups here over the years but he’s still chasing his first Ayr Gold Cup winner after his late dad Peter won the big race 3 times with Polly’s Brother, Able Albert and Final Shot in 1983, 1984 and 1990 Easterby saddles 13 runners on today’s card including last year’s Kilkerran Cup winner Financer defending the trophy under David Allan at 2.45

4TH TIME

Things didn’t go to plan in the Galtres at York recently, but AEOLIAN’s earlier Newmarket success has worked out well. Pitched into a handicap for the first time, the daughter of Fastnet Rock is expected to bounce back. Brielle had to settle for third when sent off joint-favourite at Leicester last week, but is good enough to get involved. Recent Southwell runner-up Donna Nook is another to consider.

It looks best to side with THE CHILDE OF HALE, who has been freshened up since his win at Doncaster in July. Veteran Jewel Maker arrives in good form and must be taken seriously, along with Pol Roger who, although not the most consistent, did strike the woodwork here last month. totewin: The Childe Of Hale toteeachway: Jewel Maker

SEA LEGEND: Following its run on 11/9/2025 it was reported that the horse was slowly away

Probable S.P’s: 3-1 Coeur Jaune (IRE), 7-2 Quiet Resolve (IRE), 6-1 Epidavros (IRE), 10-1 West Tyrone (GB), 12-1 One Eye Jack (IRE), Perfidia (IRE), 14-1 Redarna (GB), 18-1 Motawaared (GB), 20-1 Sea Legend (FR) 2ND 3RD 4TH

REDARNA hasn’t been the most consistent this season but Dianne Sayer’s 11-year-old often does well at this time of year. His best effort this campaign came with some cut in the ground at Carlisle and he is potentially the value play from 11lb below his last winning mark. Coeur Jaune’s hat-trick bid fell flat at Doncaster latest but she remains of interest, as does Quiet Resolve, who hit the frame in the Leger Legends race at Doncaster on Sunday.

SPINNING WHEEL was set a stiff task in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot in June. This could prove more his level for now and, with this softer surface and shorter trip likely to suit, the son of Postponed gets another chance on his handicap bow. Newbury winner Golden Handshake is another looking to get back on track after disappointing at York last time, while Surrey Belle could also go well.
