WELCOME TO AYR RACECOURSE
WELCOME to Ayr Racecourse for our Sounds of Summer Racenight and what promises to be an exciting evening with lots happening on and off the track to hopefully ensure everyone has an enjoyable and unforgettable night.
I’d firstly wish to thank our owners and trainers for choosing to run their horses here tonight and I wish all connections the very best of luck and hope you have a successful night. I would also wish to thank our sponsors for their contribution to this evening. We have seven races with lots of runners to hopefully try and pick a winner from and our feature race tonight is the 1 mile Unite Ewing Hope’s Happy Retirement Handicap, Ewing knows his racing and has been a tremendous supporter of Ayr and we wish him well in his retirement. The Ayr Racecourse Racing Club has Tap Dancer running tonight in the 7f race, will that ease in the ground be enough for her to hopefully start putting some scores on the door we wish all of the connections representing her an enjoyable evening. After racing we have some top entertainment with The Stick Men Project in the Ayrshire Suite and we have an 80’s tribute band upstairs in the PR Suite. We also have a silent disco available throughout the day. Remember too that the Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup is not far, 3 days of the best racing and entertainment in Scotland 17-19 September, we have the most compelling flat racing in Scotland with the feature Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup and Scotland’s only Group race on the Saturday too, tickets available at www.ayr-racecourse.co.uk I’d also like to thank the team here at Ayr Racecourse for their hard work and dedication which helps makes nights like tonight that bit more special. Last but not least we also have Scott Nicol playing in Western House after 9pm, thank you for your attendance tonight and I hope you all have an enjoyable evening. David Brown Managing Director

BEECHWOOD GLORY improved from his first to second run when hitting the frame at Chepstow and, if building on that third-placed effort, the Cotai Glory colt might take a bit of beating. Mick’s The Boy disappointed favourite-backers at Catterick but is a player on his previous Thirsk second, while Ponte Carlo is another to bear in mind. Of the newcomers, it will be interesting to see what the market makes of Lone Striker.

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - JASON HART
Jason is currently sitting third in our Jockeys’ Championship for 2026 here at Ayr behind Connor Beasley and Paul Mulrennan but the Hawick-born Scot has his usual strong book of rides on tonight’s card and it would be no surprise of he closed the gap on his weighingroom colleagues with a winner or two. Jason was in double-scoring form at Pontefract on Wednesday after a winner at Catterick the day before and the jockey followed up his 3 seconds at our last meeting here in late July with a winning treble at Beverley the very next day. John and Sean Quinn’s stable remains Hart’s main retaining stable but he’s busy tonight with other rides for the likes of David O’Meara and Ewan Whillans before heading back for another busy day here on Monday.

Harry Mole has been knocking hard on the door of late and wouldn’t be winning out of turn, but it might be another supporting role for Steph Hollinshead’s charge if KING OF THE JUNGLE arrives in the same form as when posting smooth triumphs both here and at Beverley. The hat-trick beckons for this in-form gelding. Startling is another to note in first-time blinkers.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - JIM GOLDIE
Jim drew a rare blank at our last meeting here on July 27 but his hoses have continued in winning form away from South Ayrshire and the Group One winning trainer is back with 13 runners on tonight’s card, as he looks to saddle the winner which will bring up a fantastic landmark of 300 successes on the Flat here at Ayr Racecourse. The Goldie team was busy at Glorious Goodwood last week as the previous year’s Royal Ascot winner American Affair bounced back to winning form for the first time since in the Group Three King George V Stakes and the Uplawmoor stable-star is now bound for the Nunthorpe Stakes at York before embarking on last year’s forcibly postponed trip to the Breeders Cup in the USA towards the end of the year.

TIGER has to shoulder a 5lb penalty but was really impressive when winning at Chester last Sunday and ought to take some stopping again assuming he arrives in similar form and this doesn’t come too soon. Unchartedterritory and Faeberon also arrive on the back of victories and the unexposed three-year-olds, who represent top yards, could give Ian Williams’ charge a race.

Hale End arrives in good form after winning over C&D last month but an added 5lb looks harsh and he will need to find more. Theoryofeverything drops to this class for the first time after his eighth here in July and is well-handicapped if he can be brought back to his peak, but JANNAS JOURNEY gets the nod. Five wins from eight starts here, the latest off 2lb lower last September, brings her right into the equation and she gets on well with jockey Lauren Young.

LADBROKES AYR GOLD CUP HIGHLIGHTS
THE LADBROKES AYR GOLD CUP The Gold Cup has been run over 6 furlongs on the current site here at Ayr since 1908, with the early years seeing the legendary rider Steve Donoghue win in 1912 and 1926, before trainer Jack Jarvis completed a unique hat-trick of 3 successive wins in the pre-war-runnings of 1937 and 1938, as well as the first post-war renewal of 1946. Jockey Eph Smith rode those Jarvis trained winners in 1938 and 1946 before returning to win the race on Klondyke Bill in 1961 and there was a run of 3 Scottish trained winners in 10 years between 1966 (George Boyd) and 1975 (Nigel Angus twice) which has left the locally-trained 75 hero Roman Warrior as the last Scottish trained winner of the race 51 years ago. Current trainer Mick Easterby won the race back in 1977 with Jon George, but the modern-day training record is held by the late David “Dandy” Nicholls, with SIX winners in a glorious 11-year spell between 2000 and 2010, a feat which current trainer Kevin Ryan could still equal or pass as there are 5 winners on his Gold Cup roll of honour already between 2007 and 2021. Karl Burke trained his third Gold Cup winner with Lethal Levi in 2024 after 2 winners in the 1990s and the retirement of dual-winner Frankie Dettori means there are 15 current jockeys with a single winner of the race on their c.v but none having added a second which only Dettori and Adrian Nicholls have managed this century. Current Scottish trainers Katie Scott and Jim Goldie have both finished third in the race with Gweedore for Scott in 2023 and Jack Dexter for Goldie in 2013, while no horse has won the race twice since the David Nicholls trained Funfair Wane won in 2002 and 2004 for the late Liverpool, Hamburg, Southampton and Newcastle footballer Kevin Keegan and his wife Jean. This year’s £180,000 Ayr Gold Cup will be the Saturday highlight of our 3-day meeting here on 17, 18 and 19 September and will be covered live on ITV Racing and Racing TV.

MR COOL produced a smooth win over course and distance last month and although upped 4lb for that success, he may have one more win in this class to come before being forced into better races. Thunderstorm Katie usually runs well here but may have to settle for a place until she comes further down the handicap. Annie Edson Taylor might prove to be the bigger danger dropping back down in grade.

Circle Of Trust led early when scoring on soft going here in June, while Runninsonofagun made all over a mile at the track last month and has placed in both subsequent starts. However, a strong pace should set the race up nicely for YAASER. He finished a highly-creditable third at Hamilton a week ago, considering he was very slowly away, and this looks a good opportunity for Jim Goldie’s four-time course winner to take advantage of his potentially lenient mark.

WICKLOW WAY romped home by over four lengths in a classified contest at Newcastle last week. Mark Walford’s charge looks worth sticking with at this level back on turf and could prove tough to beat. Charencey has gone close in similar contests on his last couple of outings and has to be included in calculations, while the unexposed Flying Moonlight could have more to offer as he steps up in trip.
