Welcome to Scotland’s biggest, richest and most prestigious day of the Flat season with eight quality races headlined by the Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup.
I should wish to thank all owners and trainers and their equine talent today for their participation. It is very much appreciated.
The Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup once again boats a high-quality field with some of the finest sprinters in the country locking horns over the six furlong course to see who will prevail and get their name on the famous trophy The Ladbrokes Ayr Silver Cup also has a top-class field and can possibly provide a clue as to where the winner of the Gold Cup will emerge from.
Scotland’s only Group race, the Ladbrokes ‘Get Rewarded With Ladbucks’ Firth Of Clyde Stakes is run immediately before the Gold Cup and features fifteen leading two-year-olds with stellar trainers sending their horses north in search of a Group victory
The Ladbrokes ‘Big Football Bet Builder Boosts’ Doonside Cup Class 1 Listed race is our Premier middle distance race and this year every horse is rated greater than 100 which will be the classiest group for many years. Today’s renewal is living up to this race’s huge reputation, every horse today is Group standard.
I’d like to say a huge thanks on behalf of everyone to Ladbrokes for their sponsorship of the Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup Festival and additionally I should wish to thank our other sponsors The European Breeders Fund and Jordans Electrics, who of course have an aptly named runner in the Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup race itself, good luck to Brian and family
There is entertainment galore over the whole site including George Bowie in the Ayrshire Suite after racing.
I’d also like to thank the team at Ayr Racecourse for their unstinted efforts to ensure these racedays are as special.
Finally, I thank you for your support and hope you enjoy this very special day’s racing and entertainment.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Our opener today is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

The dual novice winner KHAFIZ was only seventh in a Group 3 at Deauville last month, but that effort looks better in hindsight considering the winner went on to land a Group 1 contest. Roger Varian’s charge has plenty of scope for further progress now handicapping and has a leading chance. Naepoint should have come on for last month’s outing on the all-weather and this return to soft ground will suit, while James Doyle’s presence on Theoryofeverything takes the eye and he could shape well.

SECOND RACE 1.50
THE LADBROKES ‘BIG FOOTBALL BET BUILDER BOOSTS’ DOONSIDE CUP STAKES (CLASS 1) (LISTED RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This one mile, two-furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st for 3-y-o colts and geldings and 8st 9lb for fillies the same age, with 9st 5lb for 4-y-o+ colts and geldings and 9st for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level
3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for a Group 1 or 2 win.
LAST YEAR’S WINNER PERSICA (IRE)
SP: 9/2
Age/Weight: 3-9-0
Runners: 9
Jockey: Sean Levey
Trainer: Richard Hannon
Summary: Following up his success in handicaps during the summer, Persica made his move 3f out and held the upper hand to achieve his first Listed success on quick ground. He did enough to keep his head in front of Enfjaar and Eydon at the line.

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - PAUL MULRENNAN
Paul’s association with top Scottish trainer Jim Goldie has brought the pair huge success in recent seasons and the jockey is making another great effort to win our jockey’s championship here at the track, despite the attentions of Jason Hart. The highlight of Mulrennan’s season so far has been his patnership with the currently sidelined sprinter American Affair with Jim Goldie’s runner having won the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot before being ruled out for the rest of the season. Mulrennan actually rode the same horse in last year’s Ayr Gold Cup when the horse went off as 11/4 favourite after a massive public gamble down from 7/1 and 12 months on, the jockey’s book of rides is topped by this year’s Gold Cup favourite Northern Ticker
THIRD RACE 2.25
THE LADBROKES AYR SILVER CUP HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2)
RACE DESCRIPTION
After every race the official handicapper reviews all performances and alters the runners rating, either up or down, in accordance with their performance. A below-par effort could result in the drop of a point or two whilst a barnstorming victory could see a horse’s rating increase significantly However, if a recent winner runs again soon after its win, there will not be time to reassess their performance, so they will be allotted a mandatory 6lb penalty This handicap has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards and will be run over six furlongs - a consolation race for those who just missed out on the Gold Cup later on today

WEIGHTWATCHER: ABERAMA GOLD won off a handicap mark of 96, his rating is now down 9lb to 87 LONGEST TRAVELLER: BODHI BEAR trained by J A Stack, Ireland.
Binhareer scored over C&D during the summer and a more recent placed effort at Ascot suggests he could have a say in the finish. Goodwood winner Far Above Dream is another three-year-old to consider, despite carrying a penalty, but NARIKO is one to keep on the right side of Hugo Palmer’s progressive sprinter has won four of her last five starts, including a competitive handicap at Hamilton last time, and a 4lb rise may not be enough to prevent another strong challenge.

SADDLING
All horses must be saddled in the Pre-Parade Ring and taken to the Parade Ring before leaving for the start.
TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - MICHAEL DODS
Darlington based Dods has long held an ambition to win the Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup and the trainer has finished second twice in the race already with stable favourites Barney McGrew and Commanche Falls. The last named sprinter is back to try again but the new kid on the block at Denton Hall Stables is the yard’s 3 year-old ante-post favourite Northern Ticker which has been campaigned with the Gold Cup in mind all season and carries a 5lbs penalty for his latest win from Commanche Falls at York. Dods’ horses have been in excellent form all summer but the trainer’s better horses have been geared to this week’s meeting at Ayr and it looks significant that Paul Mulrennan rides the favourite here, rather than a contender from his main supplier of winners, Jim Goldie.

THE LADBROKES ‘GET REWARDED WITH LADBUCKS’ FIRTH OF CLYDE (CLASS 1) (GROUP 3) RACE DESCRIPTION
This six-furlong race for two-year-old fillies is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things. Initially, all runners will carry 9st 2lb before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for those successful in a Group 2 or Group 1.
LAST YEAR’S WINNER SKY MAJESTY (IRE)
SP: 16/5F
Age/Weight: 2-9-2
Runners: 13
Jockey: Callum Rodriguez
Trainer: William Haggas
Summary: The William Haggas-trained Sky Majesty built on her Newbury maiden win to storm up from the rear of the field, sucessfully defending herself from the late challenge of Maw Lam by a neck, adding a black-type triumph to her page.

Coming Attraction struck by just under two lengths to make it two wins from three appearances at Chester last month and is likely to be thereabouts. Argentine Tango has some smart form in the book, most notably when only finding Lady Iman too good in the Molecomb at Glorious Goodwood. However, DANDANA has progressed with each of her three outings and outran odds of 28/1 to finish fourth in the Lowther at York. With Oisin Murphy booked, she could take another step forward to score.

THE LADBROKES
AYR GOLD CUP
Distance Six furlongs Prize money £180,000
50 YEARS SINCE ROMAN WARRIOR
The last Scottish trained winner of the Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup in 1975
Today’s renewal of Scotland’s most valuable Flat race marks half a century since Roman Warrior became the last Scottish-trained horse to win Ayr’s big race back in 1975
The 17 hands chestnut 4 year-old carried top-weight of 10-0 to win under jockey Johnny Seagrave, a victory which gave local trainer Nigel Angus a second win in the race after success for Swinging Junior (Richard Hutchinson) in 1972.
Old Etonian Angus trained over 200 winners in 9 seasons at Cree Lodge and he came within a whisker of adding a third Gold Cup to his c.v. in 1977, when Future Forest was caught close home by Mick Easterby’s Jon George.
It wasn’t to be however and the closest we’ve had to a Scottish trained winner recently was Gweedore’s third place for Katie Scott in 2023
The Warrior’s jockey Johnny Seagrave went on to train greyhounds before passing away aged 76, in 2009 while Angus died at the much younger age of 62, three years earlier in 2006
Angus trained Roman Warrior just across the road from Ayr Racecourse at Cree Lodge Stables and he was followed at the yard by Charlie Williams, John Wilson and Linda Perratt, before the stables were demolished in 2007 and the land used to build student accommodation for Craigie College.
LEADING JOCKEYS?
Since 1980 five jockeys have won the race twice – John Lowe – Sparkling Boy (1980), Final Shot (1990); Jimmy Fortune Joveworth (1989),Coastal Bluff (1996);Daryll Holland Royal Figurine (1995), Continent (2001); Adrian Nicholls Bahamaian Pirate (2000), Funfair Wane (2002); Frankie Dettori Jimmy Styles (2009), Redford (2010).
LEADING TRAINERS?
Bielsa’s success three years ago gave trainer Kevin Ryan his fifth winner of the Ayr Gold Cup. His previous successes came with Brando (2016), Captain Ramius (2012), Our Jonathan (2011) and Advanced (2007). The winningmost trainer of the race is the late Dandy Nicholls with six wins.
WHEN WAS THE RACE FIRST RUN?
The Ayr Gold Cup was first run on the original Ayr Racecourse on the south side of Ayr in 1804 and restricted to horses trained in Scotland. It was won by Chancellor, who also won the race in the following year The race was run over two miles back in those days.
DO FAVOURITES HAVE A GOOD RECORD IN THE RACE?
Only FIVE outright favourites have won the Ayr Gold Cup in the last 50 years but 2023 winner Significantly (Joe Fanning) was Joint Favourite and that improves the recent record of favourites to 4 wins in the last 11 runnings.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
Ladbrokes are the new sponsors of the Ayr Gold Cup after being associated with the race before for the 22 runnings between Primula Boy’s win in 1979 and Bahamian Pirate’s success in 2000 Ladbrokes are also currently associated with the Ladbrokes Christmas Festival at Kempton, the Ladbrokes Chester Cup and the Ladbrokes Chase at the Dublin Racing Festival.
REMEMBERING PAST WINNERS
The last Scottish trained winner Roman Warrior (1975) has a restaurant named after him at the track, as does the 1804 and 1805 victor Chancellor Added to those two, the Be Friendly Bar is named after the 1867 winner which was owned by the late Sir Peter O’Sullevan.
FIFTH RACE 3.35
THE LADBROKES AYR GOLD CUP HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2) (HERITAGE HANDICAP)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This afternoon’s feature race is a historic six-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.
LAST YEAR’S WINNER LETHAL LEVI
SP: 20/1
Age/Weight: 5-9-7
Runners: 25
Jockey: Clifford Lee
Trainer: K R Burke
Summary: Lethal Levi put in a career best effort for Karl Burke to put the competition to bed, making all the running throughout and winning as clearly as they come three lengths ahead of the rest under jockey Clifford Lee.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: GO ATHLETICO trained by A McGuinness, Ireland.
Northern Ticker produced a career best to pick up a big pot at York and he is a contender again under his penalty Aramram has proven expensive to follow this year, failing to justify favouritism on five occasions, but would
foolish to dismiss. The returning Alfa Kellenic beat
and is
on her first start for Ivan Furtado, but HAMMER THE HAMMER gets the vote
Ryan’s colt ran too badly to be true when a well-backed favourite for the Stewards’ Cup but if he reproduces the level of his Royal Ascot second, he can make amends.

THE JORDAN ELECTRICS
RACE DESCRIPTION
The penultimate race of the afternoon is a seven furlongs and 50 yards handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61-80 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
LAST YEAR’S WINNER JENNI (IRE)

Summary: Jenni went one better than her runner up result at Musselburgh seven days earlier to get off the mark at the 14th attempt. Ben Robinson positioned her perfectly, and once she hit the front she found plenty to hold off the challenge of Al Muqdad in the final stages.

A tentative vote goes to OUR MIGHTY MO, who landed a nursery at Haydock around this time last year and the three-year-old should appreciate returning to softer ground. Jack Nicholls’ 5lb claim is another plus and it may be Rock Melody who gives him the most to think about following a fast-finishing fourth at Musselburgh. Silent Move, who has dropped 2lb below his last winning mark, and Look Back Smiling complete the shortlist.
