Welcome to Coral Scottish Grand National Saturday, Scotland’s £500,000 Raceday featuring the finest day’s jump racing in Scotland.
What an action-packed day we have in store and that’s before the racing commences. We have the Kilbarchan Pipe Band ably assisted by our flag bearers and if that wasn’t enough, the Red Devils Parachute display team will be performing at 12.30pm.
Today is the penultimate weekend of both trainers and jockeys championships and it could prove to be pivotal in the direction of the title. It’s really the Mullins v Skelton story in terms of the trainers title and it has caught the attention once again of everyone involved, Ayr played an important role in last year’s destination and will do so again. Despite this though there are eight fabulous races and each will have its journey of triumph and we are grateful to all connections of today’s runners.
I’d like to give a special mention to Coral whose name has become synonymous with the Scottish Grand National. Their sponsorship began in 2007 and since then, thanks in no small way to their support, the race has grown in stature and is one of the outstanding highlights of the jumps season in Britain. In addition to the Coral Scottish Grand National, Coral also sponsor the Scottish Champion Hurdle which can only be described this year as mouthwatering at the prospect of watching.
We are also thankful to our other sponsors on what is a superb afternoon’s racing.
Albert Bartlett and CPMS have sponsored for a number of years and I’d like to specially mention Ronnie Bartlett and Charlie Shiells for their continued support.
Stagecoach have been brilliant transport partners and have really engaged with the event and what a thrill to welcome new sponsors UK Greentech Glasgow who are a leading distributor of renewables. Tennents is Scotland’s favourite lager and many of you will have experienced their product!
Branding Hub sponsor the final race of the afternoon the Open National Hunt Flat Race. This race has a habit of producing some very good winners and this year’s field is full of promising young horses.
The ITV Racing team headed by Ed Chamberlin is here today providing outstanding coverage for those who can’t be here in person today as well as a crew from the forthcoming ITV series Champions Full Gallop.
A huge thank you to the team at Ayr Racecourse who make this fantastic occasion so special due to their hard work and dedication.
Thank you all for being here today and I hope you have a successful and enjoyable day

TOP JOCKEYS
HARRY SKELTON
Former champion Harry isn’t going to catch weighing room rival Sean Bowen in the Jockeys’ Championship race but he’s already banked a cool £500,000 for winning the newly instigated David Power Cup for jump jockeys this season and is going all out to help brother Dan win his first Trainers’ Championship, despite the close attentions of last year’s winner Willie Mullins. Harry has enjoyed plenty of success from limited rides here at Ayr over the past few seasons but the brothers have been regular raiders at this meeting and have had their fair share of success. The New Lion, Grey Dawning and L’Eau Du Sud have been major flagbearers for the jockey and his training sibling this campaign, as well as the now regular haul of prize money for the evergreen Protektorat and Harry will be going all out for more big-race success today on course winning Scottish Grand National mount Sail Away which was successful in today’s CPMS Novices’ Handicap Chase 2 years ago under Harry’s wife Bridget Andrews.
DANNY MULLINS
Danny is back at Ayr today after winning last year’s Coral Scottish Grand National on the Willie Mullins’ trained Macdermott and the rider has played an increasingly important part in his uncle’s training operation over the past couple of seasons, despite the availability of Paul Townend, Patrick Mullins, Sean O’Keefe and Jody Townend to partner some of the stable’s biggest stars. Danny will be back on last year’s winning mount Macdermott with the horse running from a mark of one pound LOWER than 12 months ago after some disappointing showings in between his visits to Ayrshire. Danny also rides Western Diego in the opening £50,000 Scotty Brand Handicap Chase and he’s also been booked for Bunting for Brighton and Hove Albion owner Tony Bloom in the £100,000 Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle.
TOP TRAINERS
WILLIE MULLINS
Mullins won today’s Coral Scottish Grand National with the Danny Mullins’ ridden Macdermott 12 months ago as the novice proved the pick of his 6-strong challenge which provided prize money for the yard’s other runners finishing 4th, 5th and 6th as well. Willie’s 18 runners on the day yielded the 4 winners which all but secured last season’s British Trainers’ title and the all-conquering Irishman starts today with Dan Skelton in his sights and finding himself just over £120,000 behind in this season’s British championship. Mullins recorded a magnificent 1-2-3-5-7 in last Saturday’s Grand National at Aintree and his multiple horse challenge at Ayr today comprises another 6-horse crack at the National and 4 horses chasing Scottish Champion Hurdle glory Multiple entries may pose punters a question but Willie has many owners to keep happy and you can be sure that all of his jockeys will be riding to win their respective races.
DAN SKELTON
Dan looked like landing his first Trainers’ Championship all the way up until last weekend but a magnificent Aintree Grand National meeting for Irish rival Willie Mullins has left Skelton top of the table but looking vulnerable to the challenge from his biggest rival. Nick Rockett’s success allied to a National 1-23-5-7 for Mullins means the gap going into this weekend was down to just over £120,000 but Dan can still bank plenty of money here today after saddling 6 runners yesterday and his two challengers in the £200,000 Coral Scottish Grand National look to have big chances. Sail Away and Snipe both have enough form in the book to suggest they should be key players in today’s race and the trainer looks to have a big chance in the £100,000 Scottish Champion Hurdle with the well-touted Valgrand which proved disappointing when last seen at the Cheltenham Festival.
THANK YOU SPONSORS
The Ayr Executive would like to thank today’s sponsors for their very generous support. We wish them and their guests an enjoyable afternoon with us.

– Retraining
A Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Parade of former racehorses takes place in the parade ring before the first race at approximately 11.50am.
The parade showcases the versatility of the Thoroughbred, together with the range of activities open to horses when they finish their racing careers. Today’s nine-strong parade features some familiar names who have adapted to a new career
RoR, British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses retired from racing, actively promotes the wellbeing of former racehorses through retraining, rehoming, and welfare support. Their mission is to safeguard the wellbeing of all former racehorses by highlighting Thoroughbred versatility, educating owners, and establishing a nationwide safety net for horses requiring charitable assistance. In the equestrian realm, RoR annually stages 39 separate competition series across 14 different disciplines, catering to all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite.

1. BLACK FRIDAY – ridden by Abigail Deboy
10-year-old by Equiano, formerly trained by R Mike Smith
Breeder – Catridge Farm Stud & Partners
Abigail first started riding Black Friday aka Starsky in July 2020,. She rode him for a total of 2 years in racing then she bought him in November 2024 after he retired from the track earlier that month. He was very successful on the flat winning 7 races, running in many prestigious races like the Silver Cup, C1 Listed races at both Doncaster and Chester He has not done much retraining yet, he’s been having a much needed holiday in the field, He will start his showing career in the summer whilst enjoying his first summer at grass. He knows he is super handsome and loves being a show off so Abigail is sure he will take to the show ring like a duck to water
2. BOBBIE’S DIAMOND – ridden by Lorna Littlejohn
15-year-old gelding by Vinnie Rowe, formerly trained by Andrew Hamilton
Breeder - Minch B/Stock, Av B/Stock & Brittas Stud
Bobbie’s Diamond won at Ayr on 11 Feb 2018 His retired in April 2018 and he has been with today’s rider Lorna ever since. After a bit of downtime Lorna started on his retraining journey in dressage. They started competing in 2019 and have progressed through the levels. They are regularly placed (often winning his classes) and has qualified for the Jockey Club RoR National championships at Aintree on several occasions, finishing 6th and 7th in his classes in 2023 He is the 3rd former racehorse that Lorna has retrained for dressage and she is very passionate about rehoming former racehorses and giving them a new career
3.
BRAES OF LOCKALSH – ridden by Kayleigh Williams
14-year-old gelding by Tiger Hill, formerly trained by Jim Goldie Breeder - Jim Goldie
Braes of Lochalsh has been with Kayleigh since 2018 when he retired from racing. He was bred, owned and trained locally by Jim Goldie, who Kayleigh works for. She looked after him, rode him every day and also accompanied him when he was racing. It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that he would be entrusted to Kayleigh upon his retirement. During his racing career he ran 48 times, winning 4 races with 3 of them here at Ayr! Since retiring they have been trying many disciplines including showing, dressage, a little jumping and most recently we were out with the hunt.
4. EUCHEN GLEN - ridden by Rachael Grant
12-year-old gelding by Authorized, formerly trained by Jim Goldie Breeder - W M Johnstone Euchen Glen or better known as Alan retired in November 2024. Rachael was familiar with him when he was in training as she rode him out daily so when it was announced he was retiring and was offered to her she jumped at the chance to take him on his next chapter Rachael and Alan are finding their feet as both coming from racing they are on an education journey learning new disciplines together! So far he has taken retirement fairly easy and has been out hacking and had a few RoR Scotland education clinics, They have popped the odd jump at home too and he seems to be enjoying his new life. They are aiming to take part in more of the RoR educational events that are on offer to enhance their skills this year with the hope of doing some local shows once they are up to scratch.
Grand National – April 12th 2025
Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Parade
5. GREENVIEW PARADISE - ridden by Heather Paterson 11-year-old mare by Exchange Rate, formerly trained by Jeremy Scott Breeder - Senza Rete Partnership
Heather has had Greenview Paradise for the past three years, they have mostly taken part in showing, although she does love jumping. Greenview Paradise is an extremely versatile mare with a superb attitude to everything. She won the Tattersalls RoR Amateur qualifier at Blair last August and has qualified for Royal Highland Show and the Jockey Cub RoR National Championships. They take part in RoR clinics with the local trainers. Heather says “We narrowly missed out on a Hoys qualification ticket last year so that is the aim for this year for both Hack and former racehorse classes”.
6. JOIN THE DOTS – ridden by Sophie Targell-Worth
18-year-old gelding by I Was Framed, formerly trained by Suzy Smith Breeder - Mrs S Halliwell
Join The Dots aka Dotty, is a strange former racehorse. He is a frame-overo, DNA tested by Weatherbys as 100% Thoroughbred. Since retirement from racing in 2011, he has done a bit of everything including eventing and showjumping, however his love for dancing around and looking pretty means that his passion lies in showing and dressage (and having his picture taken!) He loves to show off and have all eyes on him, in fact, he gets rather offended when someone walks past without telling him how gorgeous he is. He has been to the Royal Highland, won at Blair and competed at the LIHS racehorse to show horse class. He is a crowd favourite even if he can be marmite to some judges. Sophie says: “Join the Dots brings such a unique new perspective to how people see former racehorses and how they can be retrained and have a new purpose. He has a large following on Instagram and Facebook. He sees himself as an A-list celebrity I hope you love him as much as we all do”.
7. STARK TRUTH– ridden by Katie Kerr
17-year-old gelding by Selkirk, formerly trained by Leonard Kerr Breeder - Juddmonte Farms Ltd
Katie started her RoR journey last year with Stark Truth, who is now 17 years old and was previously trained as a National Hunt horse by Leonard Kerr They have competed in many shows last year, the Blair Horse Trials being the biggest where they received not one, but two qualifying tickets for the Aintree RoR Ridden Veteran Finals this year in August. ‘Starsky’, as he is known at home has not only helped me regain my confidence but has also aided many others. He is a real champion who is a joy to ride and makes you smile from ear to ear
8. TWO HOOTS – ridden by Maddie McGregor 14-year-old gelding by Tikkanen, formerly trained by Joanne Foster Breeder – Mrs A Kirkwood
Two Hoots formerly with Paul Nicholls, Jeremy Scott & Jo Foster ran 33 times in total, 27 times over fences winning twice over 6 years. He now lives in Ayrshire and is having a great BE career with twin sisters Nell & Maddie McGregor which has taken him over Scotland & northern England, including FEI 1* at Blair and finishing 2nd in the RoR BE100 championships in Yorkshire. He is a wonderful athlete, both very elegant and loads of fun. His activities along with eventing have proven him to be a great family horse, and he has even impeccably led a funeral procession through the town.
9. THOMAS DO – ridden by Abby Coleman
14-year-old gelding by Flemensfirth, formerly trained by Donald McCain Breeder – J J Harty
Thomas Do raced at Ayr on two occasions so it is nice to be back here at the parade showing him off The retraining journey has not been straightforward due to numerous medical issues. Thomas Do has give me his absolute everything on our journey, winning at showing, he deserves for everyone to see how amazing he is. I am looking forward to an bright future with him.
10 VACCINE – ridden by Shibhon McAuliffe
6-year-old gelding by Vadamos, formerly trained by Michael Dods Breeder – Tally-Ho Stud
Shibhon bought Vaccine in January 2024, a blind purchase that she didn’t really need but as soon as she saw him, she fell in love. He doesn’t have a lot of retraining experience yet as she has been allowing him some down time. He has been out to some RoR Open In-Hand show classes always coming home with high placings and winning most of his classes. He was a champion by his second show! He has held his own in some big RoR classes, taking a fantastic second place and qualifying for The Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree. Shibhon says: “He is the most beautiful horse inside and out. He loves cuddles and kisses, he is only six years old, and he has an amazingly bright future ahead of him which I’m honoured to be a part of”.

(CLASS 1) (PREMIER HANDICAP) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two mile and half a furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170

CHAMPION HURDLE FACTS
FIRST RUN
The Scottish Champion Hurdle was first run in 1966 which was the same year that the Scottish Grand National moved to Ayr after Bogside Racecourse closed. Blue Venom, ridden by Mr P Adams won the race.
FAMOUS HORSES
Famous horses to have won the race include legends such as Night Nurse (1976), Sea Pigeon (1977, 1978) and Alderbrook in 1996, the year after he won the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. Bird’s Nest also won this race in 1979 and 1981.
BIG RACE JOCKEYS
Andy Turnell, Peter Scudamore, Richard Dunwoody and Richard Johnson have all ridden three Scottish Champion Hurdle winners.
WINNINGMOST TRAINER
Martin Pipe won the race a total of four times with Sayaparee (1990), Granville Again (1992), Blowing Wind (1998) and Copeland (2004)
SECOND IRISH WINNER
Anna Bunina became only the second Irish trained horse to win the Scottish Champion Hurdle when she won last year. The only other Irish based winner was Captain Christy in 1973. Trained by Pat Taaffe he went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following year. This year Ireland holds a strong hand, with Ethical Diamond, Bunting, Batman Girac & Karafon.
CORAL SPONSORSHIP
Coral first sponsored this race in 2021 and we are delighted they now support the two principal races on today’s card
THE CORAL SCOTTISH CHAMPION HURDLE
(A LIMITED HANDICAP) (CLASS 1) (GRADE 2) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards and due to the quality of the race it has been awarded Grade 2 status. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap, so higher rated horses will have to shoulder more weight than their lower rated rivals.
2024 WINNER FAVOUR AND FORTUNE (IRE)
SP: 5/1
Age/Weight: 6-11-2
Runners: 15
Jockey: Tom Cannon
Trainer: Alan King
Summary: Favour And Fortune produced a fine display in what was his handicap bow After taking the lead one from home, he was briefly overtaken by Bialystok. Not to be denied, the gelding produced a gutsy effort in the closing stages to seal the win.

TODAY’S TIPS
An eye-catcher when keeping on for fourth in the County Hurdle, ETHICAL DIAMOND should be primed for this assignment off 1lb higher He still looks well treated compared to some on his Flat form. Saved for this since a strong runner-up effort in a valuable handicap at Windsor in January, Kabral Du Mathan must be thereabouts for in-form connections, as well as Bunting and Valgrand, who are better than what they have produced recently

This is a three mile and half a furlong handicap hurdle race for mares aged four-years and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

FIRST RUN
The Scottish Grand National was first run as the West of Scotland Grand National at a course near Houston, Renfrewshire from 1858 until 1866.
BOGSIDE
The race moved to Bogside Racecourse in Irvine, approximately 10 miles from Ayr, in 1867. In 1966 the first running of the race at Ayr took place with African Patrol ridden by John Leech winning.
Can Willie Mullins win again?
Willie Mullins trained horses finished 1-4-5-6 last year from 6 runners as Macdermott led home a quality field under Danny Mullins. The winning jockey’s Uncle Willie runs six this year after his horses once again dominated the big races at Cheltenham and Aintree.
TREBLE UP?
Since the race moved to Ayr in 1966 only one jockey has won the race three times – Mark Dwyer on Androma in 1984 and 1985 and Moorcroft Boy 1995 None of today’s riders have previously won the Scottish Grand National, so we will see a new name on the roll of honour.
SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL FACTS
MOST RIDES
Recently retired Richard Johnson rode in this race 19 times which is more than any other jockey. His sole success came in 2011 on board Beshabar for trainer Tin Vaughan.
BETTER LUCK OF THE IRISH
2024 winner Macdermott was the first Irish trained winner of the race since Huntsman won at Bogside in 1869.
WINNING DISTANCE
2018’s shortest winning distance of a nose was matched last year when Macdermott beat Surrey Quest by the same minimum official winning distance.
WINNING TRAINERS
Ken Oliver (4) holds the record for training the most Scottish Grand National winners at Ayr with The Spaniard (1970), Young Ash Leaf (1971), Fighting Fit (1979) and Cockle Strand (1982).
CORAL SPONSORSHIP
Coral took over sponsorship of the race in 2007, the year Hot Weld, trained by Ferdy Murphy and ridden by PJ McDonald won the race. Their commitment to the race has seen it grow to become the fourth biggest race in terms of betting turnover in Britain.

2023
KITTY’S LIGHT
OWNER: R J BEDFORD & ALL STARS
SPORTS RACING
TRAINER: CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS
JOCKEY: JACK TUDOR
After finishing second 12 months prior, Kitty’s Light went one better to land the prize, to give Christian Williams back-to-back winners in the race. He had been prone to the odd error in previous performances but put that all behind him with an excellent round of jumping. The market had been confident in his chances before hand and he bolted up by three lengths.
WIN MY WINGS
OWNER: SUE HOWELL
TRAINER: CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS
JOCKEY: MR ROB JAMES
This was a class performance from the co-favourite of Scotland’s richest jumps race who travelled well throughout the four mile marathon, making steady headway from the 16th before taking the lead four from home. She went clear after the third last, putting seven lengths between herself and stablemate Kitty’s Light. 2022
MACDERMOTT
OWNER: GALLAGHER BLOODSTOCK LIMITED
TRAINER: W P MULLINS
JOCKEY: DANNY MULLINS
Macdermott secured victory in thrilling fashion in last year’s renewal. The Willie Mullins-trained gelding looked set to stretch clear of his rivals after a good jump four from home took him into the lead. However, after navigating the last, he was challenged by Surrey Quest. A gutsy effort in the closing stages saw him clinch the win by a nose from his rival.
2021
MIGHTY THUNDER
OWNER: ALLSON SPARKLE LTD
TRAINER: LUCINDA RUSSELL
JOCKEY: TOM SCUDAMORE
Patience was the name of the game for jockey Tom Scudamore as he settled Mighty Thunder put the back and only caught the eye turning into the home straight. He was second crossing the last but got up in the last 100 yards to deny Dingo Dollar.
2019
TAKINGRISKS
OWNER: FRANK BIRD
TRAINER: NICKY RICHARDS
JOCKEY: SEAN QUINLAN
Since landing this contest in 2019, Takingrisks has been a real force over the longer trips and now has an official rating of 150. Being sent off at 16/1 in the Grand National, unfortunately, he was pulled up and will not be seen at Ayr today.
In 2019,Takingrisks blundered at the very first fence but Sean Quinlan managed to keep the partnership intact and gradually worked his way through the field, hitting the front four out and despite not jumping the last all that well, he had plenty in hand to win by four lengths from Crosspark.
FIFTH RACE 3.35
THE CORAL SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL HANDICAP CHASE (CLASS 1) (PREMIER HANDICAP) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
Our feature race of the day is the Coral Scottish Grand National, a handicap steeple chase to be run over a distance of four miles. 2024 WINNER MACDERMOTT (FR)
SP: 18/1
Age/Weight: 6-10-7
Runners: 26
Jockey: Danny Mullins
Trainer: W P Mullins
Summary: Macdermott secured the big prize last year for trainer Willie Mullins. After threatening to stretch his advantage at the front one from home, he was then challenged by Surrey Quest inside the final furlong. A thrilling crescendo saw him hold off his rival to win by a nose.

TODAY’S TIPS Willie Mullins looks to hold a strong hard and last year’s winner Macdermott must warrant respect in his bid to defend his crown. However, stablemate CHOSEN WITNESS boasts an unexposed profile over fences and the son of Well Chosen could be just the sort that will relish this marked rise in distance. Last year’s runner-up and Edinburgh National third Surrey Quest, Hasthing and Sail Away are others to note in a wide-open contest.

THE STAGECOACH WE’VE GOT YOU NOVICES’ HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS
3) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a three mile and half a furlong handicap hurdle race for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130

TODAY’S TIPS Having made light work of his opening mark at Naas last month, JUMP ALLEN looks very much one to follow Although the six-year-old has a sizeable hike in the ratings to overcome, he scored with enough in hand to suggest that there is more to come.
