Ayr Racecard - Monday 6th July

Page 1

Welcome to Ayr Racecourse for first of four Monday fixtures in July

Whether you are a first time racegoer or a seasoned racing enthusiast, I hope you have an enjoyable experience with us today.

I’d like to thank our owners and trainers for choosing to run their horses here today and I wish all connections the very best of luck, their participation is much valued.

Today I’m genuinely excited as we witness the first running of the Ayr Silver Cup Trial, a new addition to the summer programme. The Class 4 handicap over six furlongs takes its name from the well-established Ayr Silver Cup, run every September as a valuable prize for sprinters who miss the cut for the Gold Cup itself and this July curtain raiser looks set to become a fixture in its own right, giving competitive 0-85 handicappers a prize to aim at ahead of the autumn festival.

Several of the eighteen confirmed runners arrive with plenty of previous experience of Ayr. Gweedore, representing the Katie Scott yard, has won five times at Ayr and was a fine third in the 2023 Ayr Gold Cup itself off a mark 8lb higher than he races off today Jim Goldie’s Jordan Electrics is another long-time fixture on the local circuit, having finished fifth in the 2024 Gold Cup, while Michael Dods sends the veteran Dakota Gold, now 12 and a Group 3 winner over his career, to add some old-fashioned sprinting class to the field.

The entertainment continues in Western House Hotel after racing between 6 and 9pm you are more than welcome to pop down.

Finally thank you to all of the equine stars on show today together with the stable staff who attend to them there would be no raceday without them.

I wish you and a safe journey home and hope to see you back at Ayr soon.

Don’t forget our next meeting... MONDAY 13TH JULY

9 Form guide 10 Age 11 Weight 12 Stalls Position

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

Brando was the winner of the Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday, 17th September, 2016.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

Redline made a winning debut at Carlisle and the manner of that victory suggested an extra furlong wouldn’t be an inconvenience to Charlie Johnston’s filly. Don’t Stop Movin is likely to be in the mix following his runner-up effort at Redcar in May, but the vote goes to TEN CLARETS. Karl Burke’s colt shaped with promise when fourth at York and the form has since been boosted by the second going one better.

A wind operation and a first-time tongue-tie may see an upturn in fortune for Hill O Rue after disappointing on both starts in 2026. Naturalia has been knocking hard on the door with a trio of runner-up efforts and she is expected to be competitive once again. TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - CHARLIE JOHNSTON

Charlie was in the winners’ enclosure at Sandown on Friday after last year’s Derby runner-up Lazy Griff bounced back to winning form in a Listed race over 2 miles and the Kingsley Park stable-star will now be aimed at races like the Goodwood Cup and the Irish St Leger Lazy Griff’s win was the 52nd success of 2026 for the Johnston yard and the Middleham trainer has already been on the mark here at Ayr this season as he boosted his 5-year track record to 17 winners, a 16% strike-rate which improves to 41% for Johnston horses hitting the frame on their tips north from Yorkshire. Charlie has 5 horses declared here today after 1 runner yesterday and we look forward to seeing the yard’s long-serving jockey Joe Fanning back in action soon after serious illness

Hunterian supplemented two creditable efforts in defeat with a triumph over C&D. Charlie Johnston’s colt must enter calculations off 3lb higher, but EY UP HE’S A STAR is slightly more compelling. The four-year-old travelled with more verve in first-time cheekpieces when finishing third in an 18-runner affair at Doncaster and, off an unchanged mark, he may prove to be better treated. Flying Moonlight is the pick of the remainder.

Iain Jardine boasts an impressive strike-rate at present and PARISIAC holds leading claims. The seven-year-old has done little wrong in two defeats since scoring at Hamilton and a 1lb nudge up the ratings for his latest second over C&D is workable. Tip Foster came good at the second time of asking at Thirsk and he’s open to improvement on his handicap bow, while York runner-up Woven makes most appeal of those drawn high.

LADBROKES AYR GOLD CUP FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS

THE FIRTH OF CLYDE STAKES (G3)

The Group 3 Firth Of Clyde Stakes for 2 year-old fillies is the only Group race in the Scottish racing calendar and attained that status in 2004 after having been run as a Listed event for several years. One of the most notable winners was the 2002 scorer Airwave, a filly which went on to win the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket next time out. Returning to the track as a 3 year-old, Airwave went down by half a length to Aussie raider Choisir in Royal Ascot’s Golden Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes in 2003 before returning to Ayr to win the Listed Land O’Burns Fillies’ Stakes the following summer

£3,000 purchase Rose Of Kildare won the race for Mark Johnston and Joe Fanning in 2019 before being sold for 800,000 guineas the following year and 2024 course record breaker Sky Majesty won a Chantilly Group 2 next time out before winning at Listed and Group 3 level (again) in 2025

The late Barry Hills has trained the record number of Firth Of Clyde Stakes winners with 6 successes between 1976 and 1996 while jockey Paul Mulrennan has ridden the winner 3 times in 2012, 2016 and 2022

2025: SOUTH ROAD (IRE) 3 9 3 Kevin Stott 40-1 (Lucinda Russell) 16 ran Blinkers worn by No. 3, 11. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 6, 9, 10

Probable S.P’s: 6-1 Ellie’s de Vega (GB), 13-2 White Ladder (IRE), 15-2 Keep The Gold (GB), Baby Rover (IRE), 10-1 April Diamond (IRE), 12-1 Saxon Grace (IRE), 14-1 Maynora (GB), Royal Duke (GB), Newyorkstateofmind (GB), 16-1 Joshuas Dream (GB), 25-1 Henery Hawk (GB), 33-1 Saxon Gem (IRE), 40-1 So Grateful (GB)

Several of these have been knocking on the door lately and cases can be stated for the likes of Ellie’s De Vega, Maynora and White Ladder, who have all shown enough to suggest they can exploit the 6lb weight-for-age allowance. However, KEEP THE GOLD isn’t quite fully exposed in handicaps and stepping back up to 6f could be a good move now he’s become accustomed to racing with headgear added.
