Ayr Racecard - Monday 27th July

Page 1

Welcome to Ayr Racecourse for our final July Monday raceday kindly sponsored by Ladbrokes

Whether you are a first time racegoer or a seasoned racing enthusiast, I hope you have an enjoyable experience with us today.

Firstly I’d like to thank our owners and trainers for choosing to run their horses here today and I wish all connections the very best of luck, their participation is much valued.

We have had some fantastic racing in July already, we’ve managed to pack in two family days, we’ve experienced an Ayr Gold Cup trial with Jordans Electric winning. Will get go for the big one in September? We also had the inaugural running of our Silver Cup trial earlier in the month. Today we’ve now got seven thrilling races to look forward to

Our very own Tap Dancer should be running today under the colours of the Ayr Racecourse Racing Club which supports Ayrshire Cancer Support and hopefully all of the representatives today have a great experience.

Looking forward to August 8th our feature Saturday evening is our Sounds of Summer racenight and we have top racing action together with The Stickmen Project and an 80’s Tribute Band. We had the most amazing barbeque on our family day on Monday and we are having another barbeque because we loved that one so much. Bring your Stetson as we will have great Country and Western tunes playing on the lawns.

The entertainment continues in Western House Hotel after racing where Dave Galloway will be playing between 6 and 9pm you are more than welcome to pop down.

Finally thank you to all of the equine stars on show today together with the stable staff who attend to them there would be no raceday without them.

I wish you and a safe journey home and hope to see you back at Ayr soon.

Don’t forget our next meeting...

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

Brando was the winner of the Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday, 17th September, 2016.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

MARCH LILLY shaped with promise, despite looking in need of the experience, on her debut at Wetherby and although she’ll probably have to take a step forward to defeat Little Lady Karen, Kevin Ryan’s filly is expected to do just that. Sole newcomer Kanzi makes some appeal on paper so it will be interesting to see how she fares in the market.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - IAIN JARDINE

The Jardine horses have been enjoying another fine season here at Ayr and the stable’s performance during the early spring and summer meetings here has left the Carrutherstown yard third in our 2026 standings behind Jim Goldie and Michael Dods. The trainer was in action at York on Friday night where Jonny Concrete won a valuable 7 furlongs handicap in the hands of Jack Nicholls and the same jockey was in the saddle on Classy Clarets at Hamilton 11 days ago when that sprinter became the first horse from the yard to complete a 4-timer this season after wins at Wolverhampton, Catterick and Musselburgh. Jardine has 5 runners here today and longer term the yard has high hopes for Paddy The Squire in the Ebor Handicap at York next month

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - JASON HART

Hawick-born Jason rides principally for the father and son team of John and Sean Quinn but he’s also built up successful partnerships with many other trainers, including Katie Scott and Mark Johnston and he’s back at Ayr for a full book of 7 rides on today’s card after spending the weekend riding at Chester on Saturday and Pontefract yesterday. The jockey rode a juvenile winner for trainer Hugo Palmer at Catterick last week and he teams up with the same trainer in our opener at 2.15 on the once-raced Tegernsee, before getting on board a selection of fancied mounts for Katie Scott, Tristan Davidson, Simon and Ed Crisford, John Wainwright and Chris Kellett.

THE LADBROKES AYR BRONZE CUP

The Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup has been run on the current site here at Ayr since 1908 but the race’s popularity lead to the Ayr Silver Cup being introduced to the schedule in 1992, followed by the Bronze Cup in 2009

The first 25 (safety limit) top-rated horses amongst the final declarations are allowed to race in the Gold Cup, with the next 25 allocated to the Silver Cup and the 25 horses after that granted a run in the more recently introduced Bronze Cup.

Local trainer Jim Goldie won the Bronze Cup with Jack Dexter in 2012 and again with Call Me Ginger in 2021, both horses going off well-backed favourites at 5/1 and 4/1.

Jack Dexter ran in the next 4 Gold Cups without winning but he did finish third to Highland Colori in 2013 and was only beaten four and a half lengths behind Louis The Pious and Don’t Touch in 2014 and 2015.

2022 Bronze winner Danzan was following up Tim Easterby’s 2019 win with Musical Society and Danzan recorded a midfield finish in the 2023 Silver Cup before returning to the Bronze Cup and finishing third to Diligent Resdev in 2024.

Runninsonofagun wasn’t able to back up his C&D success when third over the same track and trip, but this represents a drop in class and the top-weight must be respected. Approaching Dawn held on to land a classified contest here and remains of interest, but a chance can be taken on SPIRIT OF NATURE Jim Goldie’s gelding was well held in all three of his qualifying runs last year, but returns on the back of wind surgery. He’s related to some smart types and may prove much better than an opening mark of 51. totewin: Spirit Of Nature

4TH TIME

The unexposed EMPIRICAL had eight lengths in hand when scoring on his second start in handicap company over an extended mile at Nottingham earlier in the month. The first-time application of blinkers and step up in trip may bring about further improvement and the threeyear-old is hard to oppose, despite a 10lb rise. Recent C&D winner Pearl Eye is an obvious threat, while Geo and Rastnet are others with strong claims.

Doon The Glen and Supremissy both arrive on the back of narrow victories and have to be respected as a result. That said, their new marks demand more from them and marginal preference is for STARTLING. The four-year-old has been running consistently well in defeat of late and this drop in grade could be enough to see her return to winning ways.
