Ayr Racecard - Monday 20th July

Page 1

Welcome to Ayr Racecourse for our Glasgow Fair Family Raceday.

Whether you are a first time racegoer or a seasoned racing enthusiast, I hope you have an enjoyable experience with us today.

I’d like to thank our owners and trainers for choosing to run their horses here today and I wish all connections the very best of luck, their participation is much valued.

We have a huge variety of attractions for all the family to participate in from face painting to live shows hopefully there is something for everyone and remember to look out for the Mascot race. In addition with the weather forecast being so good we have a barbeque today… summer is definitely here.

We also of course have the Ayr Gold Cup Trial today which is now demonstrating a real pathway and insight into the Ayr Gold Cup in September, last year’s winner of this trial Almareq went on to secure victory this year in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Jubilee stakes at Ascot no less. Today’s race should be equally as hot and £30000 prize money on a Monday is well worth winning.

Looking forward to August 8th our feature Saturday evening is our Sounds of Summer racenight and we have top racing action together with the biggest barbeque in town. On the entertainment front we have The Stickmen Project, an 80’s tribute show all playing live after racing we even have a silent disco

Finally thank you to all of the equine stars on show today together with the stable staff who attend to them there would be no raceday without them.

I wish you and a safe journey home and hope to see you back at Ayr soon.

Don’t forget our next meeting... MONDAY 27TH JULY

9 Form guide 10 Age 11 Weight 12 Stalls Position

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

Brando was the winner of the Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday, 17th September, 2016.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

Star People improved on his debut 10th at York to finish fifth at Chester on his most recent start and has been gelded since. With further progression likely, he has to be respected, but GREAT OAK can win this match. Karl Burke’s juvenile is related to plenty of winners and has enough speed in his pedigree to suggest that he could make a winning debut over this trip.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - JIM GOLDIE

Last year’s Royal Ascot Group 1 winning trainer (American Affair) has made Ayr his second home over the years and the trainer starts today’s meeting just 2 winners short of saddling his 300th winner on the Flat here in Ayrshire. Goldie has also amassed a healthy total of winners here over jumps, but he’s principally a Flat handler these days and Ayr was also the venue for his very first winner as a trainer 31 years ago, as well as his 1000th winner (under both codes) when Call Me Ginger scored here in June 2022. The Goldie name hasn’t made it on to the Ayr Gold Cup winners’ board yet but the trainer runs 3 in today’s Trial and success in the big race in September remains a major ambition.

THE LADBROKES AYR BRONZE CUP

The Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup has been run on the current site here at Ayr since 1908 but the race’s popularity lead to the Ayr Silver Cup being introduced to the schedule in 1992, followed by the Bronze Cup in 2009

The first 25 (safety limit) top-rated horses amongst the final declarations are allowed to race in the Gold Cup, with the next 25 allocated to the Silver Cup and the 25 horses after that granted a run in the more recently introduced Bronze Cup.

Local trainer Jim Goldie won the Bronze Cup with Jack Dexter in 2012 and again with Call Me Ginger in 2021, both horses going off well-backed favourites at 5/1 and 4/1.

Jack Dexter ran in the next 4 Gold Cups without winning but he did finish third to Highland Colori in 2013 and was only beaten four and a half lengths behind Louis The Pious and Don’t Touch in 2014 and 2015

2022 Bronze winner Danzan was following up Tim Easterby’s 2019 win with Musical Society and Danzan recorded a midfield finish in the 2023 Silver Cup before returning to the Bronze Cup and finishing third to Diligent Resdev in 2024.

Probable S.P’s: 3-1 Veblen Good (IRE), 9-2 Clonmacash (GB), 6-1 Lord Roxby (IRE), Jordan Electrics (GB), Dandy Magic (IRE), 8-1 Azure Zain (FR), Oriental Prince (GB), 16-1 The Caltonian (GB), 20-1 Gentle George (GB)

Jordan Electrics has a strong constitution and as a multiple course winner, Jim Goldie’s veteran must be taken seriously. Azure Zain is a player based on his Ascot victory a couple of starts ago. However, slender preference is for VEBLEN GOOD, who is still open to improvement and could have things teed up nicely for him if his two main rivals set some warm fractions.

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - PAUL MULRENNAN

Paul’s link-up with Jim Goldie has become a staple policy for winner-finding at Ayr over the past few years and the jockey rarely leaves the track without a winner thanks to his partnership with the Group 1 winning trainer Mulrennan shared that Group 1 glory with Goldie last June when American Affair won the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot and the rider was also a Group 1 winner when Michael Dods’ Mecca’s Angel won back-to-back runnings of York’s Nunthorpe Stakes in 2015 and 2016 Paul teams up with Goldie’s Jordan Electrics in the Gold Cup Trial today after recording his latest winner here last Monday and the jockey’s partnership with Dods continued with a winner on Northern Express at York a few days earlier

The consistent DONNA NOOK is worth another chance. Having won over a mile at Ripon at the start of June, reverting to this trip looks a good move and a 2lb higher mark should be manageable. Mayor Of Maghera and Runninsonofagun command respect as last-time-out winners, but the 2024 winner Hale End could be a bigger danger with this representing a drop in class.

All bar one of GLASSES UP’s 13 career wins have come at this venue and another bold showing should see the veteran heavily involved. He escapes a penalty for winning an apprentice race over 1m5f here last week and his versatility regarding distance is a persuasive factor. Sophiesticate, Phantom Shadow and Taylormade Lad have all been reliable and form a solid shortlist, although any support for Toy Soldier would be dangerous to ignore on his debut for a new yard.
