Welcome to Ayr Racecourse for the Racing TV raceday the second of four consecutive Monday meetings here in July.
I should firstly wish to thank all of our owners and trainers for participating today with their beautiful equine talent and whether you are a first time racegoer or a seasoned racing enthusiast, I hope you have an enjoyable experience with us today.
We will have seven fiercely contested races today and our 2 year old race always provides a future star, today will no doubt provide the same.
The Ayr Gold Cup trial race takes place next Monday and what a race that is turning out to be. Last years winner Almeraq has gone on to win this years Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Stakes, a Group 1 race at Ascot no less. In addition American Affair a winner of the Group 1 King Stand Stakes took part in 2023, will there be a future group one winner
Our very own Tap Dancer is running today under the Ayrshire Cancer Support Ayr Racecourse Racing Club colours this time over a shorter distance, good luck to the representatives.
Finally there is entertainment in Western House after racing where Scott Nicol will be playing between 6pm and 9pm I hope you have a successful and enjoyable day and return again in the future.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - EWAN WHILLANS
Hawick-based Whillans had a double from 4 runners at our last meeting here at Ayr last Monday but the trainer wasn’t here to witness those wins from Royal Blaze and Ebony Maw due to being busy at the sales. Ewan has 4 runners declared here today after a runner each at Perth yesterday and Hamilton on Saturday and the stable’s horses look to be in fine mid-summer form with the yard’s overall strike-rate running at 18%. One of today’s runners, Millbuie (3.30), was only beaten a short-head and a nose into third in a blanket finish here last Sunday and all of today’s Whillans runners have to be respected on their own recent form and the obvious general well-being of the yard

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - DAVID ALLAN
Irvine born David doesn’t always find himself at his local track due to his main employer Tim Easterby sending horses far and wide in search of winners but he’s back on home turf with 3 rides this afternoon, after 5 mounts at Chester on Saturday. Allan was riding on the first day of last weekend’s 2-day fixture here last Sunday and while he didn’t head back home with a winner on that occasion, three of his mounts, Break The Bank, Off Spin and Lope Y Linda all finished second. The jockey went on to have a double at Catterick last Wednesday to keep his seasonal strike-rate at a respectable 10% and one of those Catterick winners, Warby, looks a two-year-old to follow for the rest of the season.

LADBROKES AYR GOLD CUP HIGHLIGHTS
THE DOONSIDE CUP
This Listed mile and a quarter race has become one of the staples of the Gold Cup meeting and the historic event has a fine record of attracting some of the best 10 furlongs horses in the country.
Current trainer John Gosden’s father Towser saddled the winner 3 times between 1958 and 1965, his final winner Rehearsed ridden by Bobby Elliott, the jockey who would go on to ride Mark Johnston’s first ever winner in 1987 Noel Murless saddled 3 winners between 1968 and 1975 with Vincent O’Brien saddling Candlestand to give Willie Carson the first of his 4 winners in 1974.
Legendary equine names like Gunner B, Jellaby and Sea Pigeon joined the winners’ roster during a golden age of Flat racing in the 1970s and 80s while Frankie Dettori rode back-to-back winners of the race 20 years apart when he triumphed in 1989 and 1990 and again in 2009 and 2010
Sir Michael Stoute was a regular raider with 4 winners in 1986, 87, 94 and 95, while current trainers Saeed Bin Suroor (5 wins) and Andrew Balding (4) have every chance of adding to their totals after Balding’s win 12 months ago with Almeric took him to within one of the post-war record of 5 winners held jointly by bin Suroor and the late John Dunlop.
Trainer Sam Hall won the race 4 times between 1950 and 1973 with his niece Sally adding a fifth Doonside Cup to the family roll of honour with Key to My Heart in 1996

AYR GOLD CUP TRIAL, CLASS
3, 6F £30,000
MONDAY 20TH JULY
We stage the fifth running of the Ayr Gold Cup Trial, the highlight of our card on Glasgow Fair Family Day on Monday 20 July, and this year again generously sponsored in celebration of Fergie and Myra Happel.
The race was introduced for horses aged 3 years and upwards rated between 71 – 90.
We think it creates the ideal platform for horses progressing through the handicap ranks and encourage them to go on and run in either the Ladbrokes Ayr Gold, Silver or Bronze Handicaps.
Last years running saw Almeraq win in strong style and go on to great success by prevailing in the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Stakes at Ascot. The 2024 winner Alfa Kellenic subsequently triumphed in the 2024 Ayr Silver Cup thereby franking the quality of the race.
Ayr Racecourse Managing Director David Brown said “ I was delighted with the fourth running of the Ayr Gold Cup Trial and this race is proving to be a real gem in the Ayr programme. To have the winner of last years race become a winner of a Group 1 race in 2026 is testimony to its calibre and competitiveness.”
“I would hope that this years renewal builds on last years success and with £30,000 prize money available on a Monday afternoon I’m sure we will see a fiercely contested race.”
A stunning trophy previously run for a race named the Squadron Gallop will be held by the winning owner for a year.

Jm Jhingree made the most of a drop in the ratings when scoring in a selling handicap at Hamilton 18 days ago and he merits respect off just 2lb higher in the ratings. However, the four-year-old appears to have more on his plate in this contest, with WOOHOO fancied to capitalise. Jim Goldie’s mare arrives on the back of good second over C&D and the return of Paul Mulrennan may see her back in the winner’s enclosure. The majority of these have something to prove at present, so Runninsonofagun is likely to prove popular given he was beaten under two lengths on his last two outings at Carlisle. It would come as no surprise if the four-year-old was to secure a belated second career victory, but it could be worth chancing BRAES OF DOUNE Jim Goldie’s veteran posted several creditable efforts in defeat off higher marks last season and his sixth-placed reappearance at Ayr should have blown away any cobwebs. Whiskey Pete is worth a second look in first-time cheekpieces. totewin: Braes Of Doune

War Memorial arrives having won two of his last four starts, including the most recent of those at Catterick, and he is capable of being in the mix. However, the vote goes to recent C&D winner JKR COBBLER The seven-year-old had a few of these in behind when building on a string of consistent efforts here last Sunday and a 4lb penalty may not be enough to stop him. Cascade Hall hasn’t quite been at his best on his last couple of starts but the drop in trip offers him the opportunity to produce a better performance. That said, his stable companion ANNANDALE gets the nod. The eight-year-old ran with plenty of credit to finish third over C&D last Monday and wouldn’t need to improve much on that effort to get back to winning ways. Simple Star heads the remainder.
