Welcome to Ladies Day, the opening day of the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival Scotland’s biggest and richest jumps fixture.
Over the next two days we’ll stage some of the finest National Hunt racing the sport has to offer featuring top horses, trainers and jockeys with both the Trainers and Jockeys Championship reaching pivotal points in the season. I’d like to thank our owners and trainers for choosing to run their horses here today and I wish all connections the very best of luck and sincerely hope you have a successful day and return again in the future.
This afternoon’s feature race is the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase and today’s contest marks the 32nd sponsorship at this Festival by the Hillhouse Group. Sponsors are more important than ever and their support helps us stage the best racing possible and continue to attract quality runners. I’d like to thank the Vernon family for this generous and continuing support.
I’d also like to thank all our other sponsors this afternoon. Coral came on board as principal sponsors of the Scottish Grand National in 2007 and their unstinting commitment to this Festival ever since has seen it grow into one of the most important fixtures of the jumps racing calendar
Slater Menswear sponsor our first race and are also providing a fantastic £1200 voucher as part of the Style Awards which form such an integral part of the day
Seko Logistics, one of the world’s leading logistic service providers, have also been loyal supporters of Ayr Racecourse for a number of years and celebrate their 10th anniversary Congratulations to them.
Thistle Cabs, one of Ayrshire’s leading taxi companies, sponsor the Thistle Cabs Group Handicap Hurdle and are another company who are regular supporters of the Racecourse.
A big welcome to Jardine Utilities who are sponsoring our “Hands and Heels” Handicap Hurdle for Conditional Jockeys and Amateur Riders. We welcome your support and hope you have a great experience with all of your guests.
Abbot Risk is an award-winning Safety Engineering and Risk Management company operating globally and we are delighted to have them sponsoring our Mares’ Maiden Hurdle.
Our Style Awards take place in the Champagne Lawns during the afternoon and there are terrific prizes in five categories – Most Stylish Lady, Stylish Gent, Stylish Hat/Headpiece, Sustainable and Most Stylish Couple.
There are some amazing prizes on offer including a trip to Milan from Stewart Travel and 2 tickets to see Olly Murs and overnight accommodation courtesy of The Village Inn, many thanks to all of our sponsors.
In addition, we also have the amazing Barrioke with Barry from EastEnders performing in the Ayrshire Suite after racing, get yourself signed up and you could sing with a legend! Scott Nicol will be in Western House after racing.
I’d also like to thank the Ayr Racecourse team who have worked tirelessly to ensure this day is a great success.
To everyone enjoy your day!

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time) going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.
Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.
HOW TO BET
1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager
2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.
3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.
4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.
5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.
6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.
EACH WAY BETTING
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win
• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2
• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

THE SLATER MENSWEAR HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 3)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170

MARES’ MAIDEN HURDLE (CLASS 3) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the mares aged four-years-old and upwards in this two mile hurdle will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today
2024 WINNER

The five-year-old was well beaten off a mark of 113 in a deep handicap at Kelso last month, but drops back into maiden company and sets the standard with a revised rating of 111. Kanitamay completes the shortlist.

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - HARRY SKELTON
Former champion Harry is too far behind Sean Bowen in the Jockeys’ Championship to collect another title this season but he’s already banked £500,000 for winning the David Power Challenge for jumps riders this season and is still going all out to help brother Dan in his quest for the Trainers’ Championship. Harry’s had plenty of success from limited rides here at Ayr in recent years and there have been big-race success this season on The New Lion, Grey Dawning and L’Eau Du Sud as well as the now regular win and place prize-money haul from the top-class chaser Protektorat. Harry looks set for another busy day here and his mount in the Get Home Safe With Thistle Cabs Handicap Hurdle (2.40) Ace Of Spades looks sure to be one of his better chances.
THE GET HOME SAFE WITH THISTLE CABS HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 3)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This three mile and half a furlong handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 125 In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
2024 WINNER CATCH HIM DERRY (IRE)
SP: 5/6 F
Age/Weight: 6-10-10

Summary: Catch Him Derry justified his tag as favourite in this race as he produced a perfect jump at the last and moved clear of the rest of the field to secure a comfortable victory for trainer Dan Skelton.

TODAY’S TIPS
Imperial Merlin is a C&D winner who showed improvement after a wind operation to score at Haydock and has to be respected off just 4lb higher However, HISTRIONIC beat a subsequent winner to shed his maiden tag at Chepstow last month and Paul Nicholls’ promising six-year-old is likely to have plenty of improvement in him. This is only his fourth start over hurdles and he is fancied to make a successful handicap bow Ace Of Spades is another to keep an eye on.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - DAN SKELTON
Dan looked like landing his first Trainers’ Championship all the way up until last weekend, but a magnificent Aintree Grand National meeting for Irish rival Willie Mullins has left Skelton still top of the table, but looking vulnerable to his closing rival. Nick Rockett’s success and a National 1-2-3-5-7 for Mullins means the gap going into this weekend is down to just over £120,000 but Dan can bank more prize money here today with Mullins delaying his massive Ayr challenge until tomorrow’s Scottish Grand National card. Skelton’s 6 runners here this afternoon include Riskinthground in our £50,000 highlight at 3.15, the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase, and every penny earned by his other 5, Roxanne, Ace Of Spades, Asta La Pasta, Nurse Susan and Out Out, will be very welcome ahead of the Mullins challenge arriving in Ayrshire tomorrow

THE HILLHOUSE QUARRY HANDICAP CHASE (CLASS 2) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two mile, four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

TODAY’S TIPS
Dan Skelton has a good record in this race and his Riskintheground is dangerous to underestimate from his last winning mark. THE SEKO LOGISTICS SCOTLAND NOVICES’ LIMITED HANDICAP CHASE (CLASS 3) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two miles and half a furlong novices’ limited handicap steeple chase is for horses aged five-years-old and upwards who are rated between 0-130 and have not won more than two steeple chases.

Paso Doble can play a big part on his fencing bow if not inconvenienced by cutting back in trip, while C&D winner Dance Thief adds a touch of intrigue with first-time cheekpieces tried.

THE CORAL HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 2) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two mile, five and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

TODAY’S TIPS
Dan Skelton trained last year’s winner and NURSE SUSAN is anticipated to make a bold bid in a competitive renewal. The eight-year-old was still in contention approaching the last in the Martin Pipe before fading in the closing stages. She ran a fine race considering that was her first start for over a year and should be spot-on for this. Jockey bookings suggest last month’s Uttoxeter winner Red Risk is preferred to Irish Hill of the Paul Nicholls runners, while The Four Sixes makes most appeal of Olly Murphy’s contingent after scoring in good style at Bangor I Love My Baie is not out of it either
