8 Form guide
9 Age
10 Weight
Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time) going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.
Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.
HOW TO BET
1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager
2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.
3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.
4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.
5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.
6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.
EACH WAY BETTING
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win
• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2
• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

GREEN SKY looked set to go close before making a bad mistake at the second-last hurdle in a C&D handicap in early November. The five-year-old certainly performed better than the fourth-placed effort suggests on that occasion and a reproduction of her subsequent third in a 21-runner maiden hurdle at Navan may prove good enough in today’s contest. Jet To Vegas has filled the runner-up berth on his last three appearances and he’s feared most, ahead of penalised winner Admiral Stewart

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - CRAIG NICHOL
Craig looks to be riding at the top of his game right now and the jockey has some good rides here at Ayr after riding the winner of the first race at the 3-day Berkshire Million at Windsor on Friday on Derryhassen Paddy for trainer Lucinda Russell. The Scottish rider followed in the footsteps of Lucy Alexander (2012/13) when he won the Conditional Jockeys’ Championship in season 2015/16 and the pair have since been followed by fellow Scot Patrick Wadge as champion in the season just past in 2023/24. Nichol starts the day with another ride for Russell on Derryhassen Paddy’s owner Richard Gilbert’s Jet To Vegas (trainer retains a half-share) with Cowboy Cooper looking an interesting ride back over hurdles for Donald Whillans at 1.50 and Away She Goes the Nichol mount for Paul Robson in the last at 4.02.
TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - GORDON ELLIOTT
Elliott has yet to add a Coral Scottish Grand National here at Ayr to his 3 Grand National wins at Aintree but the race will no doubt come into focus for several of his stable-stars in April with Irish Grand National success at Fairyhouse already on the trainer’s cv as well. The Cullentra House trainer (County Meath) made his name in the early days of his training career by sending boxloads of horses to win a host of races at Perth and there are two Elliott trained chasers engaged here today Western Fold goes in the 2.20 with Undeniable Alibi primed for the 3.27 and both horses are set to be ridden by rising star Sam Ewing who has slotted in to the number one jockey role for Elliott since Jack Kennedy suffered a broken leg for the 6th time as a result of a fall at Fairyhouse in November
CORAL SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
Jordan Electrics Seafield Trophy Mares’ Handicap Hurdle
This 3 miles and half a furlong handicap hurdle for mares is proving to be a hugely successful part of the 2-day Coral Scottish Grand National Festival and the 2024 winner Czech Her Out (Lucinda Russell) was returned at 14/1 under a great ride from the soon to be crowned Champion Conditional Jockey for 2023/24 Patrick Wadge.
Champion trainer Willie Mullins ran 3 in the race with one finishing third, one dead-heating for 5th and one pulling up but the previous year’s race was won by a former champion trainer Paul Nicholls with 8/1 chance Sabrina and the Skeltons, always great supporters of Ayr, had been successful in 2022 with Get A Tonic.Remember the Saturday of the Festival has been sold out for the last few years so book early!

Having ended his last campaign with a ready victory over fences at Perth in May, Cowboy Cooper must enter calculations reverting to hurdles off what looks a workable mark. Market support for Donald Whillans’ charge on his return to action must be noted, but it may be worth taking a punt on handicap debutant HELSGETAWAY Although the son of Getaway will need to jump with more fluency than when fifth at Hexham last month, an official rating of 100 could prove on the lenient side. Primoz and Western Fold arrive on the back of falls, but they both likely have better days ahead in this discipline and neither can be dismissed. Regardless, HOMBRE DE GUERRA built on his promising chase bow behind the smart Caldwell Potter at Carlisle when scoring with ease over this track and trip 18 days ago. Although the handicapper has reacted with a 10lb hike in the ratings, Nick Alexander’s charge rates as the most solid proposition and a brace may be on the cards.

Nab Wood had excuses when finishing sixth in his hat-trick bid over an extended 2m6f at Kelso last month and it would be no surprise if he were able to make his presence felt now eased in trip off an unchanged mark. That said, he is tentatively taken on with FOSTER’SISLAND. Micky Hammond’s charge was in with a winning chance at the final flight before fading into fourth on the run-in over an extended 2m5f at Wetherby on Boxing day and, coming back a furlong in distance off 1lb lower, this may be the day to catch him. Golden Maverick is another for the shortlist. totewin: Foster’sisland

The lightly-raced De Legislator retains plenty of potential despite a low-key effort in a Grade 2 over an extended 3m at Haydock when last seen in February and, for a yard whose inmates can often improve for a fence, he commands respect on his chasing debut. That said, he may have to play second fiddle to ILIKEDWAYURTHINKIN Following a C&D victory, Ben Haslam’s charge readily brought up a double over 3m5f at Newcastle in November and the suspicion is that an 8lb rise may not be enough to anchor this progressive chaser. Irish raider Undeniable Alibi is also a key player. totewin: Ilikedwayurthinkin toteeachway: De Legislator

This looks a trappy affair on paper so only a tentative vote goes to the unexposed MIX DE GRIS Lucinda Russell’s charge lost little in defeat when finishing runner-up in a first-time hood (retained) over 2m at Wetherby on his penultimate start and, making his handicap debut for his in-form stable, he looks the one to be with.
