1.15pm - Top weight, Mirsky ran a very nice race last time out in the Clipper Handicap at York. A repeat of that effort could see him being able to defy the weight here. The Andrew Balding yard has been in flying form recently, and Aragon Castle has every chance of adding to their list of winners. He breaks from stall 3 and could be right up with the early pace but does look to have tactical speed.
1.50pm - Phantom Flight won the Listed Steventon Stakes at Newbury in July at a big price and looks to have good claims here now returning to the 10 furlong trip Enfjaar won the John Smiths Cup at York in July and was narrowly beaten into 2nd in the Chesterfield Cup Handicap at Goodwood a few weeks later. He comes here on good form and conditions should suit.
2.25pm - Alfa Kellenic has been on a winning streak lately It’s possible the handicapper has now caught up with her. She runs off a mark of 93 today and breaks from stall 22 so it’s going to be a tough ask for her. The veteran, Summerghand is still running well these days and is sure to attract support. Emperors Son is worth a market check on handicap debut. Brooklyn Nine Nine looks interesting from stall 15. He has not had the best of luck in running in some of his previous starts lately and there could be more to come from him off a mark of 81.
3.00pm - Sky Majesty won her maiden at Newbury by a nose The form of that maiden race has since worked out very well. She is bred for speed and there could be plenty more to come from her now stepping into group company. Englemere comes here with plenty of experience. He ran well in France last time out in a Group 3 race, but a further improvement may be needed to win this today. Irish raider, Grande Marques has been keeping good company in Ireland, and she has to be respected coming over here. She comes here off the back of a nice win in a rated race at Navan.
3.35pm - Commanche Falls was runner up in this race in 2022 and tends to run well at this track. The 7 year old gelding carries top weight so it’s going to be a tough ask but does has place claims. Mostabshir finished a good 4th in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood and draws stall 15 and looks to be coming into form now for the Gosden team. Sergeant Wilko (NAP) draws stall 9 and has been on a winning run lately. He goes up in the weights but still might have enough in hand. He can race from the front and looks an interesting selection here for Kevin Ryan.
4.10pm - Redarna is a previous course and distance winner The 10-yearold has been on a recent run of good form. He carries top weight today but has run ok off this mark recently and a return to a left-handed track may suit better this time around. Al Muqdad gets cheek pieces added today and drops 1lb in the weights from his last run. He has previously shown he can run to a high level and has won here over the course and distance.
4.40pm - Desert Falcon won last time out and goes up in the weights, now running off 79. That run was encouraging and there could be more to come from him today, breaking from stall 5. Pals Battalion has been running on softer ground conditions lately but a return to better ground should not be a problem for him. He steps up to 7 furlongs for the first time and looks like an interesting selection off a mark of 68.
5.15pm - Kihavah finished 2nd in the Ebor at York last month at 25/1 and a repeat of that effort would see him go very close here today. There may be more to come from Friday Fever who showed a significant improvement in form last time out when winning well at Naas. She takes a big step up in trip and is worth a market check.
Welcome to Scotland’s biggest, richest and most prestigious day of the Flat season with eight quality races headlined by the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup.
The Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup once again boasts a high quality field with some of the finest sprinters in the country locking horns over the six furlong course to see who will prevail and get their name on the famous trophy The Virgin Bet Ayr Silver Cup also has a top class field and can possibly provide a clue as to where the winner of the Gold Cup will emerge from.
Scotland’s only Group race, the Virgin Bet Firth Of Clyde Stakes is run immediately before the Gold Cup and features thirteen leading twoyear-olds with stellar trainers sending their horses north in search of a Group victory and amongst the illustrious owners no less than an entry by the King and Queen.
The Livescore Bet Doonside Cup Class 1 Listed race, this year in particular, is just oozing quality and remains one of the top middle distance Listed races in the country with today’s renewal living up to this race’s huge reputation, every horse today is Group standard.
I’d like to say a huge thanks on behalf of everyone here at Ayr to Virgin Bet and Livescore for their sponsorship of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and once again they are offering an enhanced ‘Best Turned Out’ award prize on all of their sponsored races across the festival and as a unique further prize all winning racing grooms will be entered into a draw to win an exclusive ‘voucher’ worth £500
Additionally I should wish to thank our other sponsors Millar Callaghan and Jordan Electrics who of course have one of the favourites in the feature race.
I’d also like to thank the team at Ayr Racecourse for their unstinted efforts to ensure these racedays are as special.
Finally I thank you for your support and hope you enjoy this very special day’s racing and entertainment.

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.
Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

SUNDAY 13TH
OCTOBER
Our opener today is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
SP: 9/2

Jockey: Hollie Doyle
Trainer: Richard Spencer
Summary: Richard Spencer’s gelding had won this race two years prior in 2021 and placed in the 2022 renewal and so came into this contest as a clear favourite. Hollie Doyle held him up at the rear of the field early on before kicking on late on to take the win by just a short head.

The form of Mirsky’s recent York effort has worked out well and, though he merits the utmost respect, it is stablemate PADISHAKH who gets the vote. The gelded son of Wootton Bassett caught the eye at Ripon last time out having been short of room passing the two furlong marker He’s 1lb lower on this occasion and ought to be a real threat granted a smoother passage. Aragon Castle (sixth) finished behind the aforementioned Mirsky on the Knavesmire but is 2lb better off, while the consistent Apiarist could pick up more minor money

Shadwell’s number one rider is on board his retaining owner’s Mostabshir from the John and Thady Gosden yard in today’s Gold Cup and the 4 year-old comes to Ayr after his drop back to sprinting for the first time resulted in a close-up 4th to Get It in the Stewards’ Cup at Glorious Goodwood. The Gosdens haven’t had a vintage season by their own high standards but the yard has a superb record in big handicaps and one of Crowley’s other 3 rides include the Shadwell owned Enfjaar in the Listed Doonside Cup, after this successful handicapper finished 5th in Group 3 company on his last start at York. Crowley previously won the Doonside Cup on Opera Gal for Andrew Balding in 2012. 13% SUCCESS RATE AT AYR OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS 2 WINS FROM
RACE DESCRIPTION
This one mile, two-furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st for 3-y-o colts and geldings and 8st 9lb for fillies the same age, with 9st 5lb for 4-y-o+ colts and geldings and 9st for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for a Group 1 or 2 win.

Phantom Flight (second) seemingly had the measure of ENFJAAR (fifth) in the Strensall last month, but there are reasons to believe the latter can reverse that form. Roger Varian’s charge was never as well positioned as the former having been caught out wide. That shouldn’t be the case here, though, and while he now receives 3lb from George Scott’s gelding, the return to further will undoubtedly aid his cause. Persica finished a creditable third in the Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor and should not be underestimated.

The 5-times Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup winning trainer has 4 runners in today’s £180,000 renewal with Room Service, Aleezdancer, Jehangeer and Sergeant Wilko and the yard has another runner in the Silver Cup in the shape of Bergerac. Ryan’s last Gold Cup winner was Bielsa in 2021 and he’d taken the race before with Brando (2016), Captain Ramius (2012) Our Jonathan (2011) and Advanced (2007). Ryan managed two third places from 7 runners on Thursday’s card before 5 more runners at the track yesterday and the trainer’s last two Gold Cup winning jockeys, Kevin Stott and Tom Eaves, are on Sergeant Wilko and Room Service in today’s big race.

After every race the official handicapper reviews all performances and alters the runners rating, either up or down, in accordance with their performance. A below-par effort could result in the drop of a point or two whilst a barnstorming victory could see a horse’s rating increase significantly However, if a recent winner runs again soon after its win, there will not be time to reassess their performance, so they will be allotted a mandatory 6lb penalty This handicap has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards and will be run over six furlongs - a consolation race for those who just missed out on the Gold Cup later on today

This six-furlong race for two-year-old fillies is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things. Initially, all runners will carry 9st 2lb before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for those successful in a Group 2 or Group 1.

Distance Six furlongs Prize money £180,000
The Ayr Gold Cup was first run on the original Ayr Racecourse on the south side of Ayr in 1804 and restricted to horses trained in Scotland. It was won by Chancellor, who also won the race in the following year The race was run over two miles back in those days.
In 1907 the Ayr Gold Cup was run over the new course and over a new distance of six furlongs. The reason for the change in distance was that the Duke of Montrose wanted his horse Raeberry to have a better chance of winning the race. The Duke’s plans were scuppered however when Charis won the race.
Since 1980 five jockeys have won the race twice – John Lowe – Sparkling Boy (1980), Final Shot (1990); Jimmy Fortune Joveworth (1989),Coastal Bluff (1996);Daryll Holland Royal Figurine (1995), Continent (2001); Adrian Nicholls Bahamaian Pirate (2000), Funfair Wane (2002); Frankie Dettori Jimmy Styles (2009), Redford (2010).
Bielsa’s success three years ago gave trainer Kevin Ryan his fifth winner of the Ayr Gold Cup. His previous successes came with Brando (2016), Captain Ramius (2012), Our Jonathan (2011) and Advanced (2007). The winningmost trainer of the race is the late Dandy Nicholls with six wins.
Since 1980 only five favourites have won. These are Coastal Bluff in 1996 at 3-1, Don’t Touch in 2015 at 6-1, Son Of Rest, who was co-favourite at 5-1 when dead heating with Baron Bolt in 2019, Nahaarr in 2020 who was sent off at 7-2 and then Significantly at 8/1 last year
Virgin Bet was launched in 2019 and is one of the UK’s fastest growing sportsbooks. This is the fourth year of sponsoring the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and nine of the races, including the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold, Silver and Bronze Cups.
The Ayr Gold Cup has built in stature over the years and it now takes a very highly rated horse to win. In 2016 Brando, with a BHA rating of 110, became the highest rated horse to win the race. In 2019 dead heaters Baron Bolt and Son Of Rest were both rated 101, Nahaarr in 2020 had a rating of 100 and last year’s winner Significantly ran off 94 In 2000 Bahamian Pirate win the race off 86 which shows just how far the race has come.
Chancellor won the race, in both 1804 and 1805 and there is a restaurant on the racecourse named after him as there is Roman Warrior, winner of the race in 1975 And the Be Friendly Bae is named after the horse of the same name, winner of the Gold Cup in 1967 and owned by the late Sir Peter O’Sullevan.

This afternoon’s feature race is a historic six-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

Kevin Ryan’s colt was worth a lot more than the winning margin suggests on his handicap debut at Pontefract in July and has since undergone wind surgery The son of Kodi Bear should be able to make full use of his hold-up tactics and might swoop past his rivals when it matters. Sergeant Wilko and American Affair are others to keep an eye on.

RACE RESULT
2ND
3RD 4TH TIME
REMEMBER
to retain all betting tickets until “Weighed in” is announced.
The penultimate race of the afternoon is a seven-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61-80 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
SP: 4/1F
Age/Weight: 8-9-7
Runners: 12
Jockey: Ben Curtis
Trainer: David O’Meara
Summary: A second success on the day for Ben Curtis, Cold Stare was perhaps a surprise favourite considering he had ran (and finished second) in the Bronze Cup the day before. Nevertheless he still had plenty of running left and raced well, despite a slow start, and just headed Craven before the finish.
LEADING COURSE TRAINER (19-24): J Goldie (74 wins from 602 runners, 12%) runs YAASER TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): D O’Meara (10 wins from 58 runners, 17%) runs AL MUQDAD & JENNI
WEIGHTWATCHER: DANZAN won off a handicap mark of 79, his rating is now down 9lb to 70
LONGEST TRAVELLER: TIERNEY trained by H Palmer, Malpas, 219 miles.
Jenni bounced back to form when hitting the crossbar at Musselburgh last week and she should give a good account off 1lb higher However, she may come out second best to TIERNEY, who ran too bad to be true when finishing down the field at Newbury last time and is better judged on her runner-up effort at Leicester prior to that display If she can reproduce that level of form, she could be the one to beat in a first-time visor Wreck It Ryley completes the shortlist.

RACE RESULT DISTANCES
After showing a likeable attitude when scoring over 7f at Thirsk earlier this month, DESERT FALCON can follow up. Julie Camacho’s charge has been raised 4lb for that near-length success, and Oisin McSweeney’s 3lb claim can help to carry much of that burden. The reopposing Vince Le Prince (third) is likely pose the most significant questions to the selection being 1lb better off, while Mereside Diva won off a 3lb lower mark at Thirsk in June and a return to form would see her considered.

Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post.
All horses must be saddled in the Pre-Parade Ring and taken to the Parade Ring before leaving for the start.
The final race this afternoon is another handicap race, this time for stayers and run over one mile and about five furlongs. It has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which have been officially rated between 76 and 95 Like all handicaps on this afternoon’s card this means that should a horse rated 90 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85 unless a 6lb penalty is added.

Trainer: Charlie Johnston
Summary: A double on the day for Joe Fanning, Capital Theory had been unable to find success at this meeting in his previous two attempts (2021 and 2022) but it was third time lucky this year for the Charlie Johnston gelding. He was a rather comfortable winner here.

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (19-24): J Goldie (74 wins from 602 runners, 12%) runs EUCHEN GLEN & MOUNTAIN ROAD
TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): J Goldie (6 wins from 30 runners, 20%) runs EUCHEN GLEN & MOUNTAIN ROAD
LONGEST TRAVELLER: FIVER FRIDAY trained by P Traynor, Ireland.
A host of in-form rivals line up in this heat, with the slight preference being MOUNTAIN ROAD, who arrives here seeking a hat-trick after wins at Newmarket and most recently at Chelmsford. Making his first appearance for Jim Goldie, he will have to defy a further 3lb rise for a half-length victory, which is negated by his rider’s claim. Kihavah ran a big race when second in the Ebor at York last month and a repeat of that effort
see him in the thick of it, while Fiver Friday is an Irish raider to note.
