Ayr Racecard - Friday 20th September

Page 1

FRIDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER

Virgin Bet

Raceday Preview

2.03pm - A tight and competitive fillies Nursery with not much between the favourite Lovely Spirit and the outsider Larchill Lass. Beronia on her handicap debut could be very well treated, she looked like she pulled too hard last time, but if she can settle nicely early, could easily run away with this. Who Wants Me has run creditably in all three starts to date and again looks poised to give another good account of herself.

2.33pm - Another Nursery to get stuck into and this looks tailormade for the Richard Fahey trained Bonnie’s Boy Second in all three races to date, but still looking progressive has an excellent chance to get off the mark. Should he falter the Charlie Johnston trained Where’s Clare could well take advantage off top weight.

3.05pm - Six of the field won last time out and this years renewal looks extremely competitive. Kaadi is proving to be a bit frustrating and probably not one to rely on for win purposes. Uncle Don looks like the one to be on, Richard Fahey likes to run one of his decent 2yo here and judged on his previous two runs looks very progressive. A lively outsider could well be Lexington Blitz trained by sprint specialist Robert Cowell.

3.40pm - Frost At Dawn should go very well now she is dropping down in class after previously running ok in group races. Azure Blue has a good record at Ayr and along with the ultra-consistent Marine Wave who should be up with the pace throughout. One to note at a price could well be Gutsy Girl who is improving all the time.

4.15pm-TheremaybemoretocomefromTrilbywhobreaksfromstall14.Hehas shown some good form in recent months and a mark of 76 looks feasible He is duetogoup2lbsintheweightsanddoeshavehischanceshereongoodground. Eternal Sunshine is a course and distance winner who carries a low weight here. The Jim Goldie trained filly returns to 6 furlongs and looks an interesting selection from stall 16. Catherine Chroi finished 6th in the Ayr Gold Cup Trial Handicap In July She has dropped 2 lbs since that run and has shown enough previous form to suggest that she could hit the frame here today.

4.45pm - Typical of this meeting with another highly competitive handicap field. Mount King should give a good run for your money, winless so far this season, but now five pounds lower than his last winning mark and with conditions to suit should run well. Swift Salian who is relatively lightly raced should also give a good account.

5.20pm - A tricky looking finale and the two against the field are the Iain Jardine pair Elemental Eye and Ravenscraig Castle. Both are winless so far this season, but have been running creditably, the 1m 5f trip should prove suitable for both.

WELCOME to Virgin Bet Ladies Day which features some high class racing plus the Style Awards with fabulous prizes on offer.

The three principal races today are the Virgin Bet Ayr Bronze Cup, the British EBF Stallions Harry Rosebery Stakes, Listed Race, and the Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies Stakes, Listed Race.

The Bronze Cup has a maximum field of 25 horses all vying to win the first of our three sprint cups this weekend and may give an early indication as to where the winners of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold and Silver Cups will emerge from tomorrow

The British Stallions EBF Harry Rosebery Stakes has one of the largest fields in recent years and invariably produces a speedy winner Today’s field again features some talented young horses from leading stables and an exciting race is in prospect.

The Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies’ Stakes was only introduced in 2018 and has quickly established itself as one of the leading races at the Festival. This race is a real test of speed for fillies and this years contest has attracted no less than five horses rated 100 and above and at the head of the field is Azure Blue who has already won the Listed Land o Burns race here at Ayr in 2023 together with a Group 2 race at York in the same year. It should be a terrific spectacle.

Our Style Awards take place in the Champagne Lawns with some fabulous prizes on offer possibly the best ever including a £1200 Slaters voucher, £500 Thorne Travel voucher and an overnight stay at the House of Gods Hotel in Glasgow being a just a couple of highlights but there are so many more check out the Style Awards page for full details. I’d like to thank all the companies who sponsor these awards.

I must give a special mention to today’s sponsors without whose support we wouldn’t be able to stage such high quality racing, Virgin Bet and Live Score, the European Breeders Fund, Thistle Cabs, Microtech Group and Slater Menswear a big thank you.

Days like this take a lot of planning and I’d like to extend my thanks to the team at Ayr Racecourse for ensuring everything runs smoothly

I hope that you all enjoy an exciting afternoon of racing, style awards and entertainment.

Don’t forget our next meeting... SATURDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER

9 Form guide 10 Age 11 Weight 12 Stalls Position

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

RESULT

SCATTER PENNY was dropped a generous 4lb after her nursery debut at York having won both starts prior at Nottingham and Pontefract. The daughter of Elarqam was inconvenienced by a slow start and is worth another chance, especially with the step up in trip and the addition of a tongue-tie likely to help. Cymbidium won on her nursery debut at Thirsk earlier in the month and has to be respected off a 5lb higher mark. Suzette is another to note.

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - JOE FANNING

Veteran pilot Joe landed last year’s Ayr Gold Cup on Significantly for trainer Julie Camacho and the soon to be 54 year-old (September 24) could be back with another live chance of success on Saturday on improving 3 year-old Pilgrim for David and Nicola Barron. Joe pilots most of his winners for the Charlie Johnston team after a long period of success riding big-race winners for Charlie’s dad Mark but the rider is still in big demand when not required by his main employers. Joe has 3 rides today after 5 on yesterday’s card but unlike fellow “oldie” Franny Norton who retires tomorrow, Joe is showing no signs of packing it all in.

Bonnie’s Boy has finished second on all three outings to date and is likely to play a leading role making his first start in a nursery. However, a chance is taken on LOVAT SCOUT bouncing back from his latest effort. A winner on debut at Thirsk, Karl Burke’s colt had excuses when not appearing to handle the track at Ripon last month and he remains a colt full of potential. Hamilton winner Our Mighty Mo and Candy rate best of the rest. totewin: Lovat Scout toteeachway: Bonnie’s Boy

HARRY ROSEBERY STAKES (CLASS 1) (LISTED RACE)

RACE DESCRIPTION

Listed races are high-class and only bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 contest. In effect, it is an intermediate level; many of the runners in this five-furlong contest for two-year-olds will be using this race as a springboard to even better things. Initially weight is allocated according to sex, before penalties are given to horses that have previously won at this level or above. These penalties range from 3lb for a Listed success to 5lb for a Pattern race victory

COTO DE CAZA was an impressive winner when getting off the mark at the second time of asking at Beverley before stepping up on that effort when taking a conditions stakes race at Goodwood. The manner of that performance suggests she’s well worth a crack at this prize. Kaadi’s recent second at Longchamp was boosted by the winner following up in the Flying Childers at Doncaster last week and her consistency gives her an obvious chance. The class-dropping King’s Call is noted too.

The dual Ayr Gold Cup winning trainer (2006 and 2015) will be well represented in his bid for a third success in Scotland’s most valuable Flat race, but he’s also got an eye on the prize at Newbury tomorrow where his once-raced and unbeaten juvenile Powerful Glory bids to land the trainer a third win in the Mill Reef Stakes after successes in 2013 and 2015 Fahey’s Ayr Gold Cup winners were Fonthill Road and Don’t Touch and after 7 runners here yesterday, the Fahey team will be saddling another big squad as they look to build on what’s already an excellent record for the trainer here at Ayr.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Another high-quality Listed contest, this time run over five and a half furlongs and for fillies aged three-years-old and above who haven’t won a Group 1 race after March 31st 2024. Again, many of the competitors here will be looking to graduate into Group-class company making for an exciting race. Three-year-olds will have to carry 9st and four-year-olds and above are burdened with 9st 2Ib before penalties are added according to the class of race a filly has won in the last six months - 3lb for a Listed race, 5lb for a Group 3 and 7lb for a victory in a Group 2 contest.

She began to make headway through the field from just over a furlong out before taking the lead late on. It was an impressive finish as she ran on strongly to take the comfortable win.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a six-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

Three previous winners of this contest in Call Me Ginger, Danzan and Roundhay Park head to post and each are too well treated to ignore, but a tentative vote goes to SPIRIT OF APPLAUSE The market has spoken in favour of Tim Easterby’s charge since being fitted with cheekpieces at the beginning of August, and he repaid his supporters at Beverley last time out. It remains to be seen whether stall 20 will be an aid or a hindrance, but he appears to be coming in to form and, though a 5lb penalty makes things tougher, he ought to have plenty in hand judged on past exploits. Others to note include last year’s runner-up Cold Stare, The Ridler and Rory

RACE RESULT DISTANCES

THIS YEARS LOVE has made steady progress since winning at Beverley in June. A narrow winner on the Westwood last time out, Mick and David Easterby’s gelding is only 3lb higher and he could go in again with further improvement on the cards. Jewel Maker continues to knock on the door and he’s unlikely to be far away, although the younger legs of Swift Salian might present a more significant threat.

2ND 3RD 4TH TIME RACE RESULT

ANNANDALE hasn’t made much of an impact over a host of inadequate trips recently, but he did catch the eye at Musselburgh last time. Jim Goldie’s charge finished down the field in the corresponding event 12 months ago, but he is now 10lb lower and looks to have been given a real chance. Belle Of Annandale was another who contested this last year and she should not be written off following a couple of promising efforts over hurdles, while L’Eagle Aid is another to consider.
