Ayr Racecard - Thursday 19th September

Virgin Bet

Raceday Preview

1.42pm - Bowen Island should go better here than his last run out at York and looks a promising candidate to take his first win fourth time out. Catalyse looked impressive and finished strongly to win by 2 lengths on debut in Hamilton back at the start of June but found it tough against a stronger field at Ascot in a Group 2 second time out, both over 6 furlongs, so a step up here to 7 furlongs should suit.

2.12pm - Methgal ran well on debut at Haydock, the form of that race looks solid. He was then upped in class last time at Goodwood and shaped with promise after being slowly away. He looks sure to improve again and run a big race here.

2.42pm - Frank The Spark looks the main player here, going for a third win in a row at this distance, and only narrowly beaten by a short head the last time out at Ayr in July, also at 5 furlongs. Water of Leith also comes into this in decent form and could be a real danger to the selection.

3.12pm - Eternal Sunshine will be the one to beat, looking for his fifth win since returning from a 214 break on June 1st. Wee Fat Mac will be the fan favourite for accomplished trainer Iain Jardine, with an impressive record on the Scottish racing scene and is certainly one to consider.

3.42pm - Dark Moon Rising will be looking to go one better on his Ayr return after a narrow defeat to Sea King in July, and a step down in distance is a positive. Aviemore will be looking to make it 2 wins in a row with Franny Norton on board.

4.15pm - Queen Of Soldiers makes her handicap debut under the guidance James Doyle, who could produce the best from this Filly in his current form, a hat-trick looks to be on the cards for the Michael Bell trained Dancingwithmyself, who should be the popular bet here.

4.58pm - Never Better for James Doyle and Roger Varian is an unexposed three-year-old off a very workable mark of 74. He was sent off favourite for a Newbury Handicap where he ran very well. With this drop in grade and further improvement to come he is a strong fancy.

5.23pm - Half Moon Rising is on a hat-trick and respected, but preference is for Haworth Star who got off the mark last time in the first-time hood. The switch back to turf shouldn’t be an issue and the extra furlong here will really suit.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

CATALYSE scored with the minimum of fuss over 6f at Hamilton on debut before finishing mid-division in the Coventry at Royal Ascot. Now with his sights lowered stepping up to 7f for the first time, the Wathnan-owned colt looks the one to side with. Jorge Alvares was doing his best work late on when finishing fourth in a valuable sales race at York last month and might be the main danger to the selection now upped in trip. Of the newcomers, Magellan Cloud appeals most. totewin: Catalyse toteeachway: Jorge Alvares

The 53 year-old Ayr Gold Cup winning rider is to call it a day by retiring from the saddle after Saturday’s meeting at Chester and the rider takes a bow here this afternoon with 4 rides, including 2 for Charlie Johnston. Norton has ridden more than 500 winners for the Johnston team over the years and takes the mounts on Mystical Sky and Aviemore for the Middleham yard today at 1.42 and 3.42. The jockey’s Ayr highlight has to have been his Ayr Gold Cup success on Our Jonathan for Kevin Ryan in 2011 but he also won Saturday’s Doonside Cup in 2008 and 2014 on Lady Deauville and Sennockian, as well as winning a Group 3 Firth Of Clyde Stakes on Princess Iris in 2006

BAMBALAM caught the eye with the way he travelled into contention before fading into seventh on his debut in the Convivial over 7f at York last month and, easing in grade with the promise of more to come, this 600,000gns breeze-up purchase gets the vote to score. Methgal wasn’t disgraced when sixth in a competitive maiden at Glorious Goodwood and he looks the main danger to the selection, although any market support for Elsass may prove significant.

WATER OF LEITH was an unlucky third in a competitive handicap at Doncaster last week, taking up the running a furlong from home before being run down by two rivals who raced on the opposite side of the track. Off an unchanged mark and with his sights lowered slightly, he can gain compensation. Canon’s House has shown enough in his qualifying runs to suggest that he warrants respect on his handicap debut, while a 4lb rise for a recent Beverley success doesn’t discount the hat-trick seeking Frank The Spark totewin: Water Of Leith

RACE DESCRIPTION

This one mile, two-furlong contest is a handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70 This particular handicap is also open to horses rated 101 and 102 as well as horses rated 80 and below

LAST YEAR’S WINNER THUNDERING

Age/Weight: 4-9-0

Runners: 8

Jockey: Graham Lee

Trainer: Kevin Ryan

Summary: The Kevin Ryan trained gelding had struggled coming into this contest, last at Ripon and York in his previous two starts. He looked rejuvenated here however, apparently benefitting from a different style of ride and keeping on very well to win.

The hat-trick seeking DANCINGWITHMYSELF supplemented her Ripon victory in June with another authoritative display at the same venue two months later. A 6lb higher mark is unlikely to be the ceiling of the three-year-old’s ability and she rates as the one to beat. Hamilton winner Tafsir warrants respect in her current heart, but this distance may prove on the sharp side. With that in mind, a bigger threat may emerge from the reliable Reyaadah Star. totewin: Dancingwithmyself toteeachway: Reyaadah Star
