Ayr Racecard - Saturday 22nd June

Page 1

Welcome to Ayr Racecourse for our Unite Scotland Summer Saturday Raceday, one of the highlights of the season here at Ayr and a fixture which mixes high quality racing with some terrific entertainment.

We now have eight races on today’s card including the feature race The Unite The Union Winning For Members EBF Land O Burns Fillies’ Stakes, a Class 1 Listed race with £50,000 in prizemoney. We have some very highly rated horses including Beautiful Diamond who triumphed in our Harry Rosebery Stakes as a 2yo back in September, Graceful Thunder who has already won a Listed Race as a 2yo and of course Azure Blue who has prevailed in a Group 2 race at the longer 6f distance.

The main supporting race is the Join Unite Online @unitetheunion. org Handicap Stakes for the Johnstone Rose Bowl which again has attracted very highly rated horses and is sure to ultra competitive.

Unite Scotland are our principal sponsors for the second year and I’d like to thank them for their generous support and hope all their members who are with us today have a fabulous time.

Thanks also to Bridgend Motor Group who are sponsoring with us for the fourth year. We really appreciate their continued support and again hope all their guests have an amazing day

We also welcome first time sponsors 3b Crane Hire who are celebrating their 10th Anniversary. We’re delighted they are marking this milestone with us.

Thanks as always to the continued generous support of the European Breeder Fund.

Today sees the start of Racing Staff Week and we’re staging a charity race following the last race raising money for Racing Welfare. Thank you to the Scottish Bookmakers Association who have kindly donated £500 to the charity and the best of luck to all participants in the race.

After racing entertainment is headlined by Martin Kemp in the Ayrshire Suite. Not to be missed.

I wish all connections the very best of luck and hope you have an enjoyable and successful day with us.

Finally as always I’d like to thank the Ayr Racecourse Team for their hard work and dedication leading up to this weekend which helps make the fixture the success that it is

I hope everyone has a most enjoyable day

Don’t forget our next meeting... SUNDAY 7TH JULY

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

RACE RESULT DISTANCES

After a promising racecourse debut, EVE’S BOY makes the most compelling case. Michael Dods’ charge showed his inexperience when second over 6f at Carlisle, having been slowly away from the stalls, and he can go one better with that experience under his belt. Big Cyril is another with a taste of racecourse action and may be the biggest danger to the selection following his third over 7f at Yarmouth. The drop to 6f is a positive, while newcomer Uncle Don, a half-brother to Group 2-placed juvenile Malc, is also noted. totewin: Eve’s Boy

4TH TIME

Jordan Electrics has won three of his last four starts and this progressive type won more cosily than the half-length winning distance may suggest last time over 6f at Hamilton. Jim Goldie’s gelding is likely to run well again, but the preference is for MOON FLIGHT. The four-year-old finished six lengths in front of the aforementioned runner on his most recent outing over 5f at Hamilton and he can confirm that form off 3lb better terms. Alligator Alley returns to a tempting mark and he completes the shortlist.

4TH TIME

After being only narrowly touched off over 7f at Leicester last time, this appears to be a good opportunity for MOON MAN to go one better. David O’Meara’s charge was beaten just a neck on that occasion and raised just 1lb, he looks capable of shedding the maiden tag. The hat-trick seeking Mereside Madness is feared most but he may struggle to defy an 6lb rise for his Newcastle success in February, while Eminent Jewel also won last time at Wetherby and isn’t easily discounted.

DISTANCES 1ST

Iron Lion struck by a length in this grade over 1m4f at Haydock earlier in the month and he is 5lb higher for that triumph up in trip, so he holds an obvious chance. However, the vote goes to BAILEYS KHELSTAR, who made every yard of the running over 2m at Ascot last time and the four-year-old may have been worth more than the winning margins suggests. The son of Sea The Stars can land the hat-trick, while Ayr Poet is another to consider. totewin: Baileys Khelstar toteeachway: Iron Lion

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - AMIE WAUGH

Amie has been a common sight on Northern Flat tracks for a few years now and the apprentice had her day in the sun at Thirsk last Sunday when she landed two valuable races in the Sky Bet Series for our leading trainer here at Ayr, Jim Goldie. Those wins on American Affair and Letsbefrank meant the rider lifted the £10,000 prize for leading jockey at the meeting and her 5 winners total for this season probably doesn’t reflect how well she’s been riding. Today’s 3 rides are all for Jim Goldie on Call Me Ginger (4.45), Allegro Brillante (5.25) and Ayr Poet (5.55) and the rider’s 5lbs claim could again prove invaluable in these ultracompetitive handicaps.

Group 2 winner AZURE BLUE was a disappointing favourite in a Listed contest at Haydock last month, but she can be forgiven for that effort as conditions possibly weren’t in her favour. Michael Dods’ mare is a class act on her day and she could prove very hard to beat on this quicker surface, with her main threat possibly being Beautiful Diamond. The daughter of Twilight Son finished fifth in the Temple Stakes at Haydock last time and has to be respected. Graceful Thunder may pick up the pieces of the remainder.

Despite being slowly away, CLASSY AL relished the drop to 5f when accounting for her nearest rival by three quarters of a length here last time. Jim Goldie’s six-year-old only has a 4lb higher rating to contend with and he looks the one to beat. B Associates produced a bit of a shock when going in by a neck at Carlisle earlier in the month and he would be foolish to dismiss off 4lb higher, while Cavalier Approach is an interesting contender in first-time blinkers.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - MICHAEL DODS

Darlington based Dods supplies the favourite for our featured Land O’Burns Stakes today (6.25) in the shape of Azure Blue with this 7-times winning filly holding an entry in next month’s Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket. Paul Mulrennan’s mount hasn’t shown her best form in two races so far this season but she looks sure to be suited by today’s better ground and she had a run at Ayr as a juvenile when she finished second at the Gold Cup meeting in 2021. Dods has 4 runners here today after several winners already this week and the trainer also has possible Ayr Gold Cup contender Glenfinnan declared for Royal Ascot’s Wokingham Handicap at 5.05

SACRED FALLS hit the target over 6f at Carlisle on her penultimate start prior to shaping better than the bare result when finishing an excellent third in a higher grade at Hamilton last week, having to wait for room before running on strongly in the closing stages. Turned out quickly off an unchanged mark, Katie Scott’s charge can make amends. The hat-trick seeking Lord Abama hasn’t looked back since sporting blinkers the last twice and cannot be overlooked in a bid to defy a 4lb rise for a ready win at Thirsk recently. Handicap debutant Rainwater also enters calculations. totewin: Sacred Falls toteeachway: Lord Abama

RACE RESULT DISTANCES

In a trappy affair, the most solid proposition appears to be COCONUT BAY Tristan Davidson’s charge showed a likeable attitude when scoring over 7f in handicap company at Wolverhampton last month and another prominent showing looks imminent. Miss Calculation sprung something of a surprise when winning over this trip at Catterick recently, and she is entitled to go well again. Haalim was too keen for his own good when finishing down the field over an extended mile at Wolverhampton latest, but can give a better account back in distance. totewin: Coconut Bay toteeachway: Miss Calculation
