WELCOME to Coral Scottish Grand National Saturday, Scotlands
£500,000 raceday featuring the finest day’s jump racing in the North.
Being the 50th anniversary of the Red Rum double in 1974 and with the equine talent on display here today it’s a truly fitting tribute to that landmark which we shall recognise with the unveiling of a plaque at the Weighing Room. It is shaping up to be a Coral Scottish Grand National for the ages.
Before today’s big race we have a special rendition of Flower Of Scotland performed by Kevin McGuire which will add to the atmosphere.
Today is the penultimate weekend of both trainers and jockeys championships and it could prove to be pivotal in the direction of the title. The three leading trainers Paul Nicholls, Dan Skelton and Willie Mullins are all well represented as they endeavour to close in on the title and should any prevail in the Coral Scottish Grand National it will be a big step towards the title. Having said that the Scottish Grand National writes its own story and don’t be surprised if it has its own say The jockeys Harry Cobden and Sean Bowen are nip and tuck and it will go to the wire.
I’d like to give a special mention to Coral whose name has become synonymous with the Scottish Grand National. Their sponsorship began in 2007 and since then thanks in no small way to their support the race has grown in stature and is one of the outstanding highlights of the jumps season in Britain. In addition to the Coral Scottish Grand National Coral also sponsor the Scottish Champion Hurdle which can only be described this year as mouthwatering at the prospect of watching.
We are also grateful to our other sponsors on what is a superb afternoon’s racing.
Albert Bartlett have sponsored the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase for many years and Jordan Electrics are also long standing supporters of the course and this year we bring the Mares Hurdle to the Saturday for the first time under their banner
I welcome back and am grateful to CPMS who sponsor the Novices’ Champion Chase and also Tennent’s for their backing of the Tennent’s Handicap Hurdle.
If you are needing transport then Let Good Times roll with Stagecoach who we are delighted to be back on board the Novice Handicap Hurdle.
The Golf Inn Prestwick once again sponsors the final race of the afternoon the Golf Inn Prestwick Open National Hunt Flat Race. This race has a habit of producing some very good winners and this year’s field is full of promising young horses.
The ITV Racing team headed by Ed Chamberlin is here today providing outstanding coverage for those who can’t be here in person today as well as a crew from the forthcoming ITV series Champions Full Gallop.
A huge thank you to the team at Ayr Racecourse who make this fantastic occasion so special due to their hard work and dedication.
Thank you all for being here today and I hope you have a successful and enjoyable day

TOP JOCKEYS
HARRY COBDEN
Harry started yesterday nicely clear of Sean Bowen in the race to replace Brian Hughes as champion jockey and the rider has superb book of rides on today’s £500,000 card at Ayr. Cobden rides top-weight Stay Away Fay in the big race at 3.35 but he’s also on Scottish Champion Hurdle defending champion Rubaud at 2.25 and has several other fancied rides which could land him the winners to keep his head in front of Bowen going into the final week of the season which ends at Sandown next Saturday
HARRY SKELTON
Harry Skelton has already achieved his own personal ambition of becoming Champion Jockey and the rider is going all out to help brother Dan wrest the trainers’ title away from current Championship leader Willie Mullins. Harry has a favourite’s chance of landing today’s £100,000 Scottish Champion Hurdle on L’Eau Du Sud for his brother and the pair team up in the Scottish Grand National itself with the general 16/1 chance Balygrifincottage. Skelton also rides the 6-timer seeking Major Fortune at 4.10 and his mount Coco Mademoiselle is sure to be well fancied to land the £45,000 Mares’ handicap hurdle at 3.0.
PATRICK WADGE
Wadge has had a fantastic season as conditional jockey for Milnathort trainer Lucinda Russell and the rider looks almost certain to be crowned Champion Conditional rider for 2023/24 when the awards are handed out at Sandown next Saturday Today’s mounts include the smart grey novice chaser Traprain Law which goes for the £50,000 Scotty Brand Handicap Chase over 2 miles at 1.20 after winning 2 of his 4 starts already this season.
PAUL TOWNEND
Townend has had superb Festivals at Cheltenham and Aintree already this spring and Willie Mullins’ stable jockey finds himself on board the 6 year-old Spanish Harlem in today’s big race at 3.35 The novice is accompanied by 5 other Mullins runners in the £200,000 feature and Townend has an excellent book of rides for Mullins which includes Uncle Phil in the opening race at 1.20, classy veteran Sharjah in the Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase at 1.50, Bialystok in the Scottish Champion Hurdle at 2.25 and A Penny A Hundred in the Mares’ Handicap Hurdle at 3.0.
RACHAEL BLACKMORE
Rachael became the first female jockey to win the Grand National when Minella Times won in 2021 and the rider bids to become the first woman to ride a Scottish Grand National winner on the 8 year-old Whacker Clan for her main employer Henry de Bromhead. Blackmore has also found riding fame with the Scottish-owned dual champion hurdler Honeysuckle and her Gold Cup success on A Plus Tard in 2022 and a Scottish Grand National win today would mean she’d gone one place better than Gee Armytage who finished second on Merry Master, beaten a neck, behind Run For Free in 1993
DEREK FOX
Fox suffered huge disappointment when Corach Rambler unseated him at the first fence at Aintree last weekend but the jockey is still the only currently licensed jockey to have ridden two Grand National winners and he’d love to add a Scottish Grand National to his record courtesy of Edinburgh National winner Inis Oirr at 3.35 Fox is widely regarded as being one of the finest horsemen ever to grace the weighing room and punters will be more than happy to side with a rider who has won at Aintree on Corach Rambler and One For Arthur
TODAY’S JOCKEYS
TOP TRAINERS
PAUL NICHOLLS
Paul won the first of his 3 Scottish Grand Nationals back in 1997 when AP McCoy rode his only winner of the race on Belmont King. The trainer followed up with back to back successes in the race with Vicente in 2016 and 1017 and has two contenders today in the shape of Harry Cobden’s mount Stay Away Fay and Bryony Frost’s ride Broken Halo. Stay Away Fay has earned top-weight of 12-0 with a rating of 158 in his first handicap and Nicholls’ record with high-class staying chasers in major races over the years tells its own story The trainer also saddles last year’s Scottish Champion Hurdle in a bid to make it back to back successes in the £100,000 race at 2.25
WILLIE MULLINS
The Mullins stable moved into the lead in this year’s British Trainers’ Championship with last Saturday’s Grand National win from I Am Maximus in the hands of stable jockey Paul Townend. Willie is a multiple champion trainer in Ireland but clinching the British title between today and next Saturday’s final meeting of the season at Sandown would be a major achievement which hasn’t been done by an Irish yard in modern times and not at all since the domination of Vincent O’Brien back in the 1950s before the original master of Ballydoyle turned his hand to dominating the Flat scene. Mullins shows no sign of a permanent switch to the level but plenty of big Flat races have come his way and his Ebor winner Absurde also won at this year’s Cheltenham Festival.
DAN SKELTON
Dan started yesterday’s meeting around £40,000 behind Willie Mullins in the Trainers’ Championship and the yard has another 7 runners declared for today’s £500,000 card. Skelton’s Scottish Grand National runner is the 9 year-old triple point-to-point winner Ballygrifincottage which will be running for just the 11th time under rules. The Skelton runner finished second at Sandown last time and should run a big race but the yard’s main hope today will surely be Cheltenham’s County Hurdle runner-up L’Eau Du Sud which looks likely to start favourite for the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle under Dan’s former champion jockey brother Harry
NICK ALEXANDER
Nick started yesterday’s opening day of the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival just one winner behind his bestever total of 35 and he saddles a leading contender for today’s Scottish Grand National in the shape of 4-times course winner Elvis Mail which was successful in its most recent race at Carlisle. Music fans will know that Elvis Presley’s only ever visit to Britain was an army transport re-fueling stop at Prestwick Airport in 1960 when the returning GI Presley got off the plane to speak to some fans in the terminal building. Elvis Mail hasn’t hit the high notes his human namesake did just yet but Alexander’s horses have been running well all season and punters backing the grey will be hoping the bookmakers are all shook up by the result.
FERGAL O’BRIEN
O’Brien has spent this week dealing with the sudden retirement of his close friend and stable jockey Paddy Brennan but rumours have been rife that the veteran pilot was going to call it a day and Jonathan Burke rides the stable’s Scottish Grand National runner Autonomous Cloud. Brennan’s farewell winner Manofthepeople was also entered at Ayr but Autonomous Cloud carries the hopes of the still upwardly mobile stable and a big race winner at Ayr would go some way to compensate the yard for their continued absence from the winners’ enclosure at the Cheltenham Festival.
LUCINDA RUSSELL
Lucinda had a disappointing day at Aintree last Saturday when her 2023 Grand National winner Corach Rambler departed the 2024 race at the very first fence by unseating jockey Derek Fox. Russell revealed on an Ayr Racecourse Scottish Grand National Zoom call on Thursday evening that Corach Rambler is now being aimed at the Punchestown Gold Cup and that seems a logical target for a fresh horse with Grade 1 placed form in his pre-Aintree start in the Cheltenham Gold Cup behind Galopin Des Champs. Lucinda runs Edinburgh National winner Inis Oirr in today’s £200,000 Scottish Grand National and apart from a slight worry about going left-handed at Ayr, the horse is reportedly in great form after missing the Midlands National at Uttoxeter last month due to very soft ground.

A Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Parade of former racehorses takes place in the parade ring before the first race at approximately 12:15pm.
The parade showcases the versatility of the Thoroughbred, together with the range of activities open to horses when they finish their racing careers. Today’s five-strong parade features some familiar names who have adapted to a new career, including previous Ayr listed winner, Duke of Navan.
RoR, British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses retired from racing, actively promotes the wellbeing of former racehorses through retraining, rehoming, and welfare support. Their mission is to safeguard the wellbeing of all former racehorses by highlighting Thoroughbred versatility, educating owners, and establishing a nationwide safety net for horses requiring charitable assistance. In the equestrian realm, RoR annually stages 39 separate competition series across 14 different disciplines, catering to all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite.

2. JOIN THE DOTS
1. DUKE OF NAVAN – ridden by Kelly Harding
16-year-old by Presenting, formerly trained by Nicky Richard Breeder – Keith Douglas
Duke of Navan was one of the flag-bearing northern horses for a few good years for trainer Nicky Richards for owners David and Nicky Robinson. Duke of Navan was broken in by jockey Brian Harding who also rode him on the racetrack. He was a yard favourite, and he was Nicky’s ride towards the end of his training. He has gone full circle and is now living the good life with Brian’s wife Kelly who has taken him to many fun rides, camps and he’s been hunting all winter He won his first RoR show in hand. He is ridden over the fells regularly and he will be aimed at the RoR classes in the summer Kelly says: “He is adored by all of us, and Duke of Navan still gets visits from those who have been involved with him from the beginning”.
ridden by Sophie Targell-Worth
17-year-old gelding, formerly trained by Suzy Smith
Breeder - Mrs. S Holliwell
Join the Dots aka Dotty, is a strange former racehorse. He is a frame-overo, DNA tested by Wetherbys as 100% Thoroughbred. Since retirement from racing in 2011, he has done a bit of everything including eventing and showjumping, however his love for dancing around and looking pretty means that his passion lies in showing and dressage (and having his picture taken!) He loves to show off and have all eyes on him, in fact, he gets rather offended when someone walks past without telling him how gorgeous he is. He has been to the Royal Highland, won at Blair and competed at the LIHS racehorse to show horse class. He is a crowd favourite even if he can be marmite to some judges. Sophie says: “Join the Dots brings such a unique new perspective to how people see former racehorses and how they can be retrained and have a new purpose. He has a large following on Instagram and Facebook. He sees himself as an A-list celebrity I hope you love him as much as we all do”.
RoR Parade – Scottish Grand 12:15pm – Retraining of Racehorses
Racehorses (RoR) Parade
3. NINE ALTARS - ridden by Charlotte Dun
15-year-old by Heron Island, formerly trained by Elizabeth Dun
Breeder - Noel James
Charlotte has had Nine Altars aka Toby for seven years having bought him off Ann & Ian Hamilton to point to point and hunter chase. He won and was placed in many point to points and hunter chases with Charlotte as he is an incredible jumper He retired at the age of 13 and soon after he was popping round an arena event at Floors Castle. He competes in a few RoR showing classes every summer, qualifying, and being placed 3rd at the Royal Highland final in 2023 He also loves regular trips to the beach and still retains his enthusiasm and exuberance when jumping round hunter trials or when out hunting. Charlotte says: “Toby is the perfect gentleman when Mum or friends come to ride with me but will also still pull my arms out up the gallop fields at home. We never doubted that we’d have as much fun with him in retirement as we did when he was racing, he is an incredibly kind and intelligent soul and a joy own.”
4. REWRITTEN - ridden by Sarah Chrystie
12-year-old gelding by Dubawi, formerly trained by Alan Berry
Breeder - Darley
Rewritten aka Jack has been with Sarah for the past two years. Sarah is still not sure how a son of Dubawi bred by her ex-boss ended up with her Clearly racing was not for him, but he had a lot of success on the local flapping circuit. They spent their first few months doing local hunt rides and common riding and then joined their local riding club where they have participated in many different disciplines but love cross country coming second at Duns. The plan for this year is to work on their dressage and showjumping and hopefully get a few ODEs in this year Sarah says: “I have been away from riding for over twenty years, so some days I don’t know who is teaching who. For a horse coming from a flat background, he really has showed how versatile they can be.”
5. STRONG STEPS – ridden by Natasha Turner
12-year-old gelding by Aqlaam, formerly trained by Jim Goldie. Breeder - Exors of the late J Ellis Strong Steps aka Striker won four races including a race at Ayr in July 2019 On retirement from racing, he was purchased by today’s rider Natasha just over three years ago. Strong Steps has showed great potential and ability in cross country and dressage training. He has done a lot of BHS rides and seemed to love it all. After a sudden behaviour change, he was diagnosed with ulcers and kissing spine, he received treatment and surgery with three months off and a rehabilitation schedule and seemed to bounce back quite quickly On his return, he started showing and began to excel, winning and placing at county shows and qualifying for The Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree Natasha says “I am so overjoyed with his progress and willingness. The journey to get where we are today wasn’t easy, we’re still progressing every day and hope to continue showing and some dressage this year and hope to maybe get out jumping at some point in the future.”
6. VACCINE – ridden by Shibhon Todd
5-year-old gelding by Vadamos, formerly trained by Michael Dods
Breeder - Tally-Ho Stud
Shibhon bought Vaccine back in January, a blind purchase that she didn’t really need but as soon as she saw him, she fell in love. He doesn’t have a lot of retraining experience yet as his new owner has been allowing him some down time. He has been out to some RoR Open In-Hand show classes always coming home with high placings and winning most of his classes. He was a champion by his second show! He has held his own in some big RoR classes, taking a fantastic second place and qualifying for The Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree.
Shibhon says: “He is the most beautiful horse inside and out. He loves cuddles and kisses, he is only five years old, and he has an amazingly bright future ahead of him which I’m honoured to be a part of”.

RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two mile and half a furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170
2023 WINNER MALYSTIC
SP: 8/1
Age/Weight: 9-12-0
Runners: 9
Jockey: Danny McMenamin
Trainer: Peter Niven
Summary: Found the Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival too competitive but has been largely consistent and went one place better in this than 12 months ago. Elixir De Nutz had led but couldn’t hold off the challenge of Malystic.
RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS
LEADING COURSE TRAINER (19-24): L Russell (43 wins from 259 runners, 17%) runs TRAPRAIN LAW
TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): P Nicholls (8 wins from 35 runners, 23%) runs SANS BRUIT
FANCY THAT: N Henderson won this race in 2017, 2018 and 2021. The stable runs PERSIAN TIME today
LONGEST TRAVELLER: UNCLE PHIL trained by W P Mullins, Ireland.
TODAY’S TIPS
Sans Bruit sauntered home in the Red Rum Handicap Chase at Aintree nine days ago and, despite a 10lb hike in the ratings, he must be respected turned out quickly The prize might be going back to Ireland, though, courtesy of UNCLE PHIL The Walk In The Park gelding recorded a cosy success in a Grade 3 handicap at Fairyhouse in January and a subsequent 11lb rise might not be enough to stop the unexposed chaser from going in again. Traprain Law can chase the pair home. WIN:

TODAY’S TIPS Dan Skelton landed the corresponding event 12 months ago and he looks have another solid contender in the form of HITCHING JACKING The seven-year-old has shown moderate form across his three fencing starts to date, but the handicapper has somewhat relented and it could be that forecast soft ground holds the key. Montgomery continued his upward trajectory when completing a hat-trick at Bangor last month and is respected, while Marble Sands should not be underestimated either

CHAMPION HURDLE
FACTS
FIRST RUN
The Scottish Champion Hurdle was first run in 1966 which was the same year that the Scottish Grand National moved to Ayr after Bogside Racecourse closed. Blue Venom, ridden by Mr P Adams won the race.
FAMOUS HORSES
Famous horses to have won the race include legends such as Night Nurse (1976), Sea Pigeon (1977, 1978) and Alderbrook in 1996, the year after he won the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. Bird’s Nest also won this race in 1979 and 1981.
BIG RACE JOCKEYS
Andy Turnell, Peter Scudamore, Richard Dunwoody and Richard Johnson have all ridden three Scottish Champion Hurdle winners.
WINNINGMOST TRAINER
Martin Pipe won the race a total of four times with Sayaparee (1990), Granville Again (1992), Blowing Wind (1998) and Copeland (2004)
SECOND IRISH WINNER
Anna Bunina became only the second Irish trained horse to win the Scottish Champion Hurdle when she won last year. The only other Irish based winner was Captain Christy in 1973. Trained by Pat Taaffe he went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following year. This year Ireland holds a strong hand, with Bialystock, Westport Cove, Alvaniy & Effernock Fizz.
CORAL SPONSORSHIP
Coral first sponsored this race in 2021 and we are delighted they now support the two principal races on today’s card
FEATURE EDITORIAL
THE CORAL SCOTTISH CHAMPION HURDLE (A LIMITED HANDICAP) (CLASS 1) (GRADE 2) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards and due to the quality of the race it has been awarded Grade 2 status. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap, so higher rated horses will have to shoulder more weight than their lower rated rivals.

TODAY’S TIPS
L’eau Du Sud ought to prove popular having finished a good second in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham last month, but FAVOUR AND FORTUNE gets the vote Far from disgraced in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle last time out, a handicap mark of 138 should be well within range. He finished second to Jango Baie, who was an unfortunate runner-up in a warm handicap at Aintree recently, in a Grade 1 at the Liverpool track on Boxing Day, and that looks a solid piece of form now Afadil is also noted.

RED RUM MAKES HISTORY AT AYR ON 20 APRIL 1974
No horse had ever won the Grand National at Aintree and the Scottish Grand National in the same season but 50 years ago this weekend, Red Rum proved he was no ordinary horse.
Three weeks after winning for the second time at Aintree after his famous 1973 success from the luckless top-weight Crisp, Rummy was sent to Ayr to try and complete the Grand National double and, despite pre-race worries that the task might prove beyond him, jockey Brian Fletcher brought him home 4 lengths in front of the high-class Proud Tarquin, ridden by the future Lord (John) Oaksey
The roar from the 18,000 crowd was compared in one newspaper to that of the famous Hampden Roar at the home of Scottish football and the 11/8 favourite was given a hero’s welcome back into the winners’ enclosure after banking £7,922 to add to the £25,102 he’d collected in Liverpool.
Bosses here at Ayr commissioned a statue to commemorate the feat and 12 months later, Red Rum became just the second jumps horse to have a sculpted likeness on a British racecourse after Arkle’s bronze image had been erected at the home of the Cheltenham Gold Cup which he’d won 3 times.
The Red Rum statue can be seen outside the Western House Hotel at the southern end of the racecourse.
An ordinary chaser with bad feet when purchased by Donald “Ginger” McCain for owner Noel Le Mare, Red Rum had actually contested the Scottish Grand National in 1972 when trained by Anthony Gillam, but he’d gone off the 33/1 outsider of 17 under jockey Martin Blackshaw and finished an honourable 5th behind the Maurice Barnes ridden Quick Reply
McCain’s training of the horse on the beach at Southport Sands led to massive improvement and, after he’d caught and passed Richard Pitman on Crisp to win his first Aintree Grand National in 1973, he returned to win the race again under top-weight of 12-0 a year later with L’Escargot in second place.
That 1974 success prompted a public debate as to whether Red Rum should be risked at Ayr or wait to try for a third Grand National in 1975 but McCain and Le Mare bit the bullet and history was made just 3 weeks after his second win at Aintree.
No horse had ever won both races in the same season when the Scottish race was run at Bogside in Irvine and Red Rum became the first and, so far, only horse to do the double since the race was moved to Ayr in 1966
Red Rum went on to finish second to old rival L’Escargot in the 1975 Grand National and because the statue was being unveiled at Ayr, the horse was sent north to try and win Scotland’s big-race for a second time but he proved to have had enough for that campaign and finished 7th behind Barona.
Another Aintree second to Rag Trade followed in 1976 and, when the now 12 year-old took his Aintree record to 1-1-2-2-1 by completing a historic Grand National treble in 1977, the decision was taken to have a 4th crack at that year’s Scottish Grand National where the horse finished a well beaten favourite behind Harry Bell’s Sebastian V.
Other horses have won the Scottish Grand National (both Ayr and Bogside) and the Grand National at Aintree in different orders and in different years, but no horse had completed the historic double in the same season and Ayr is honoured to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Red Rum’s achievement in 2024 with a plaque to be unveiled on Coral Scottish Grand National day

THE JORDAN ELECTRICS LTD SEAFIELD TROPHY MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 2) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a three mile and half a furlong handicap hurdle race for mares aged four-years and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.
2023 WINNER SABRINA (IRE)

Jockey: Harry Cobden

Summary: Sat prominent throughout before making a move to lead three out. Showed a nice turn of foot to quicken clear from her rivals before jumping the second and despite idling was always doing enough to hold her rivals.

As for the latter, she will find this a lot easier than her eighth in Grade 1 company at Fairyhouse last time, while Larchmont Lass and Coco Mademoiselle are others to keep an eye on. WIN: SAYLAVEE

FIRST RUN
The Scottish Grand National was first run as the West of Scotland Grand National at a course near Houston, Renfrewshire from 1858 until 1866.
BOGSIDE
The race moved to Bogside Racecourse in Irvine, approximately 10 miles from Ayr, in 1867. In 1966 the first running of the race at Ayr took place with African Patrol ridden by John Leech winning.
COULD IT BE A DREAM DOUBLE?
Willie Mullins celebrated the Aintree Grand National last Saturday, as I Am Maximus powered away to record a fantastic win. He arrives here with a strong hand as he goes chasing the double, with Closutton represented by Macdermott, Mr Incredible, Spanish Harlem, Klarc Kent, We’llhaveawan and Ontheropes.
TREBLE UP?
Since the race moved to Ayr in 1966 only one jockey has won the race three times – Mark Dwyer on Androma in 1984 and 1985 and Moorcroft Boy 1995 None of today’s riders have previously won the Scottish Grand National, so we will see a new name on the roll of honour.

FACTS
MOST RIDES
Recently retired Richard Johnson rode in this race 19 times which is more than any other jockey. His sole success came in 2011 on board Beshabar for trainer Tin Vaughan.
LIMITED LUCK OF THE IRISH
Only one Irish trained horse has won the race – Huntsman in 1869, trained and ridden by Larry Hyland.
WINNING DISTANCE
2018’s winning distance of a nose when Joe Farrell beat Ballyoptic into second place was the shortest ever winning distance in the race.
WINNING TRAINERS
Paul Nicholls (Belmont King 1997, Vicente (2016 and 2017)) and Nigel Twiston-Davies (Captain Dibble (1992), Earth Summit (1994) and Hello Bud (2009)) have both trained three winners of the Scottish Grand National. Paul runs Stay Away Fay and Broken Halo while Nigel is represented by Beauport.
CORAL SPONSORSHIP
Coral took over sponsorship of the race in 2007, the year Hot Weld, trained by Ferdy Murphy and ridden by PJ McDonald won the race. Their commitment to the race has seen it grow to become the fourth biggest race in terms of betting turnover in Britain.

WIN MY WINGS
OWNER: SUE HOWELL
TRAINER: CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS
JOCKEY: MR ROB JAMES
This was a class performance from the co-favourite of Scotland’s richest jumps race who travelled well throughout the four mile marathon, making steady headway from the 16th before taking the lead four from home. She went clear after the third last, putting seven lengths between herself and stablemate Kitty’s Light.
2021
MIGHTY THUNDER
OWNER: ALLSON SPARKLE LTD
TRAINER: LUCINDA RUSSELL
JOCKEY: TOM SCUDAMORE
Patience was the name of the game for jockey Tom Scudamore as he settled Mighty Thunder put the back and only caught the eye turning into the home straight. He was second crossing the last but got up in the last 100 yards to deny Dingo Dollar.
PREVIOUS WINNERS
KITTY’S LIGHT
OWNER: R J BEDFORD & ALL STARS SPORTS RACING
TRAINER: CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS
JOCKEY: JACK TUDOR
After finishing second 12 months prior, Kitty’s Light went one better to land the prize, to give Christian Williams back-to-back winners in the race. He had been prone to the odd error in previous performances but put that all behind him with an excellent round of jumping. The market had been confident in his chances before hand and he bolted up by three lengths.
2019 2018
TAKINGRISKS
OWNER: FRANK BIRD
TRAINER: NICKY RICHARDS
JOCKEY: SEAN QUINLAN
Since landing this contest in 2019, Takingrisks has been a real force over the longer trips and now has an official rating of 150. Being sent off at 16/1 in the Grand National, unfortunately, he was pulled up and will not be seen at Ayr today.
In 2019,Takingrisks blundered at the very first fence but Sean Quinlan managed to keep the partnership intact and gradually worked his way through the field, hitting the front four out and despite not jumping the last all that well, he had plenty in hand to win by four lengths from Crosspark.
JOE FARRELL
OWNER: M SHERWOOD, N MORRIS, R CURTIS
TRAINER: REBECCA CURTIS
JOCKEY: ADAM WEDGE
Joe Farrell is a horse whose racing career has been hampered by injury but he turned up in top condition last year to spring a 33-1 surprise for trainer Rebecca Curtis and jockey Adam Wedge.
It was an enthralling race and at one point it looked as if Vicente was going to create history by becoming the first horse in more than 100 years to win three consecutive Scottish Grand Nationals.
But it was not to be and when Joe Farrell went clear three out, it looked to be just a matter of how far, but the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained Ballyoptic and jockey Tom Bellamy had other ideas and they battled all the way to the line with Adam Wedge’s mount holding on by just a nose.

THE CORAL SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL HANDICAP CHASE (CLASS 1) (PREMIER HANDICAP) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
Our feature race of the day is the Coral Scottish Grand National, a handicap steeple chase to be run over a distance of four miles. This Premier Handicap has had its fair share of famous winners over the years including the likes of Red Rum and Earth Summit. The weights are allocated according to the official BHA rating of each horse with steeple chase winners after April 7th receiving a 5lb penalty
2023 WINNER KITTY’S LIGHT
SP: 4/1 JF
Age/Weight: 7-11-0
Runners: 18
Jockey: Jack Tudor
Trainer: Christian Williams
Summary: Christian Williams is making quite a name for himself in the Scottish National as Kitty’s Light followed in the footsteps of 2022 winner Win My Wings. He looked to have plenty in hand over his rivals and with no Win My Wings in the race this year, went one better to win by three lengths.

TODAY’S TIPS Mr Incredible unseated his rider in the Grand National last week and is better judged on his second-placed finish behind Beauport in the Midlands National last month. It would be no surprise to see him get involved on 2lb better terms with that rival. However, the vote goes to ANGLERS CRAG, who remains unbeaten since switching to the Brian Ellison stable and his triumph in the Eider at Newcastle in February was arguably his best performance. The nine-year-old goes off an 8lb higher mark and makes plenty of appeal, while Inis Oirr and Ballygrifincottage are others to consider

THE LET GOOD TIMES ROLL WITH STAGECOACH NOVICES’ HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 3) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a three mile and half a furlong handicap hurdle race for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130
2023 WINNER IMPERIAL MERLIN (IRE)
SP: 7/1
Age/Weight: 6-11-0
Runners: 8
Jockey: Henry Brooke
Trainer: John Quinn
Summary: Imperial Merlin had shaped well on his previous outing when falling at Doncaster and took his form up a notch here on handicap debut. The step up in trip clearly helped and was a ready winner under Henry Brooke.

TODAY’S TIPS
The hat-trick seeking President Scottie holds an obvious chance off a 5lb higher mark than his victory in a class 4 event at Haydock last month, but the one to side with is WELCOM TO CARTRIES Paul Nicholls’ six-year-old was far from disgraced when upped to Grade 2 level at Doncaster in January, finishing runner-up, and, while open to more improvement, he could defy his opening rating of 130 Doughmore Bay filled the runner-up berth in this grade at Haydock last time and is another to note.

THE TENNENT’S NOVICES’ HURDLE (CLASS 3) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two mile, four and a half furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

TODAY’S TIPS BILLERICAY DICKIE got off the mark in the style of a very smart prospect when winning by a wide margin on his hurdles bow over 2m4f at Punchestown in January and, with a freshness edge over some of his rivals, he gets the vote to take Willie Mullins a step closer to securing the trainers championship. Quai De Bourbon arrives on the back of an excellent third in the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham last month and he can give the selection the most to think about. Jetronic scored on his hurdles debut for this stable at Plumpton last month, though he benefitted from an easy time of things out in front that day and isn’t guaranteed the same here.

OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (CLASS 2) (CATEGORY 1 ELIMINATION) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.

GRAHAM LEE
Today’s renewal of the Coral Scottish Grand National comes 20 years after jockey Graham Lee competed the Aintree/ Ayr double on Amberleigh House and Grey Abbey for the trainers Ginger McCain and Howard Johnson.
16/1 chance Amberleigh House was giving McCain a 4th Grand National success after the 3 wins he enjoyed with Red Rum while Grey Abbey completed a famous double for the jockey at 12/1, with a certain Lucinda Russell responsible for the runner-up Kerry Lads.
Graham rode over 1000 winners before switching from being a jump jockey to riding on the Flat in 2012 and he went on to win an Ascot Gold Cup on Trip To Paris in 2015.
The jockey has life changing injuries following a fall at Newcastle last year and the best wishes of everyone here at Ayr are extended to Graham and his family as his rehabilitation continues.
