Welcome to Ladies Day the opening day of the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival Scotland’s biggest and richest jumps fixture.
Over the next two days we’ll stage some of the finest National Hunt racing the sport has to offer featuring top horses, trainers and jockeys with both the Trainers and Jockeys Championship reaching pivotal points in the season.
This afternoon’s feature race is the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase and today’s contest marks the 31st sponsorship at this Festival by the Hillhouse Group. Sponsors are undoubtedly more important than ever and their support helps us stage the best racing possible and continue to attract quality runners. I’d like to thank the Vernon family for this generous and continuing support.
Today’s renewal features some highly talented chasers from leading stables including the Greatwood Gold Cup winner Heltenham and promises to be an exciting and highly competitive race.
I’d also like to thank all our other sponsors this afternoon. Coral came on board as principal sponsors of the Scottish Grand National in 2007 and their unstinting commitment to this Festival ever since has seen it grow into one of the most important fixtures of the jumps racing calendar
The Coral “We’re Here For It” Handicap Hurdle is a highly competitive race and once again we have a quality field headed by the Grade 2 winner Wakool.
Remus Uomo are sponsors who have become synonymous with Ladies Day and also support our Style Awards which form an integral part of the day
Seko Logistics, one of the world’s leading logistic service providers, have also been loyal supporters of Ayr Racecourse for a number of years and sponsor the Seko Logistics Scotland Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase.
Thistle Cabs, one of Ayrshire’s leading taxi companies, sponsor the Thistle Cabs Group Handicap Hurdle and are another company who are regular supporters of the Racecourse.
A big welcome to GS Group who are sponsoring our “Hands and Heels” Handicap Hurdle for Conditional Jockeys and Amateur Riders. GS Group are an insurance broker who are expanding into Glasgow and the West of Scotland they’re so popular that we have two races in their name.
Abbot Risk is an award winning Safety Engineering and Risk Management company operating globally and we are delighted to have them sponsoring our Mares’ Maiden Hurdle.
Our Style Awards take place in the Champagne Lawns during the afternoon and there are terrific prizes in four categories – Most Stylish Lady, Most Stylish Gent, Most Stylish Hat/Headpiece and Most Stylish Couple.
There are some amazing prizes on offer including a £500 voucher from Remus Uomo a £500 voucher from Stewart Travel and 2 tickets to see Girls Aloud and overnight accommodation courtesy of The Village Inn, many thanks to all of our sponsors.
I’d also like to thank the Ayr Racecourse team who have worked tirelessly to ensure this day is a great success.
To everyone enjoy your day!
The Ayr Executive would like to thank today’s sponsor for their very generous support. We wish them and their guests an enjoyable day with us. SPONSORS

FORM RATINGS
6 Days since last run
7 Previous Performances
Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time) going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.
Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.
1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager
2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.
3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.
4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.
5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.
6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win
• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2
• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

This is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170
SP: 9/2
Age/Weight: 4-11-1
Runners: 15
Jockey: Harry Cobden
Trainer: Paul Nicholls
Summary: The free-going Traprain Law set honest fractions under Patrick Wadge for much of the contest. Harry Cobden kept Afadil in touch with the leaders before keeping on well to win going away from his rivals.
LEADING COURSE TRAINER (19-24): N Alexander (43 wins from 232 runners, 19%) runs HOMBRE DE GUERRA TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): P Nicholls (8 wins from 35 runners, 23%) runs JACKPOT D’ATHOU
LONGEST TRAVELLER: JACKPOT D’ATHOU trained by P Nicholls, Ditcheat, 403 miles.
TODAY’S TIPS JACKPOT D’ATHOU successfully made it two wins out of three starts over the smaller obstacles at Taunton last time. He beat a 122-rated rival that day and now makes his handicap debut off that mark, so Paul Nicholls’ gelding could have a bit in hand. Point-to-point winner Dance Thief struck for the first time under Rules over track and trip on his latest outing and he could get into contention off 4lb higher, while Bluegrass is another to note.

TODAY’S TIPS: Lily Du Berlais and Innatendue set the standard in this contest boasting ratings of 116 and 115, and the former looks the pick of that pair following her second at Catterick last month. However, SHAKEYATAILFEATHER is taken to improve past them both after producing the best effort of her career to fill the runner-up spot at Kempton last time. Dan Skelton’s mare makes only her fourth start over hurdles and she looks the one to side with.
WIN: Shakeyatailfeather

Dan has 10 horses declared on today’s card as he chases a first Trainers’ Championship and the yard was amongst the winners at Cheltenham’s midweek meeting ahead of today’s trip north to Ayr. Skelton provides most of the winners for his jockey brother Harry who is also in action at Ayr today and the Skelton yard backed up a fantastic showing at the Cheltenham Festival with another good 3 days at Aintree last weekend. Jet Pane and Heltenham represent the Skelton yard in our feature race, the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase at 2.50 today with Harry choosing recent Market Rasen scorer Jet Plane ahead of last week’s Aintree also-ran Heltenham.

Lots of love from Grant, Lisa & the girls
No horse had ever won the Grand National at Aintree and the Scottish Grand National in the same season but 50 years ago this weekend, Red Rum proved he was no ordinary horse.
Three weeks after winning for the second time at Aintree after his famous 1973 success from the luckless top-weight Crisp, Rummy was sent to Ayr to try and complete the Grand National double and, despite pre-race worries that the task might prove beyond him, jockey Brian Fletcher brought him home 4 lengths in front of the high-class Proud Tarquin, ridden by the future Lord (John) Oaksey
The roar from the 18,000 crowd was compared in one newspaper to that of the famous Hampden Roar at the home of Scottish football and the 11/8 favourite was given a hero’s welcome back into the winners’ enclosure after banking £7,922 to add to the £25,102 he’d collected in Liverpool.
Bosses here at Ayr commissioned a statue to commemorate the feat and 12 months later, Red Rum became just the second jumps horse to have a sculpted likeness on a British racecourse after Arkle’s bronze image had been erected at the home of the Cheltenham Gold Cup which he’d won 3 times.
The Red Rum statue can be seen outside the Western House Hotel at the southern end of the racecourse.
An ordinary chaser with bad feet when purchased by Donald “Ginger” McCain for owner Noel Le Mare, Red Rum had actually contested the Scottish Grand National in 1972 when trained by Anthony Gillam, but he’d gone off the 33/1 outsider of 17 under jockey Martin Blackshaw and finished an honourable 5th behind the Maurice Barnes ridden Quick Reply
McCain’s training of the horse on the beach at Southport Sands led to massive improvement and, after he’d caught and passed Richard Pitman on Crisp to win his first Aintree Grand National in 1973, he returned to win the race again under top-weight of 12-0 a year later with L’Escargot in second place.
That 1974 success prompted a public debate as to whether Red Rum should be risked at Ayr or wait to try for a third Grand National in 1975 but McCain and Le Mare bit the bullet and history was made just 3 weeks after his second win at Aintree.
No horse had ever won both races in the same season when the Scottish race was run at Bogside in Irvine and Red Rum became the first and, so far, only horse to do the double since the race was moved to Ayr in 1966
Red Rum went on to finish second to old rival L’Escargot in the 1975 Grand National and because the statue was being unveiled at Ayr, the horse was sent north to try and win Scotland’s big-race for a second time but he proved to have had enough for that campaign and finished 7th behind Barona.
Another Aintree second to Rag Trade followed in 1976 and, when the now 12 year-old took his Aintree record to 1-1-2-2-1 by completing a historic Grand National treble in 1977, the decision was taken to have a 4th crack at that year’s Scottish Grand National where the horse finished a well beaten favourite behind Harry Bell’s Sebastian V.
Other horses have won the Scottish Grand National (both Ayr and Bogside) and the Grand National at Aintree in different orders and in different years, but no horse had completed the historic double in the same season and Ayr is honoured to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Red Rum’s achievement in 2024 with a plaque to be unveiled on Coral Scottish Grand National day
This three mile and half a furlong handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 125 In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

This is a two mile, four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

TODAY’S TIPS OUTLAW PETER has adapted well to chasing and, with last month’s Kempton success looking particularly solid, the Paul Nicholls-trained gelding is difficult to get away from with a 5lb higher rating looking a fair assessment. Any further rain won’t hinder the selection’s chances and, with his usual partner Harry Cobden doing the steering, everything is in place for a big run. Jack had his biggest career win when Kitty’s Light won last year’s Coral Scottish Grand National for trainer Christian Williams and the pair teamed up with the same horse a week later to win Sandown’s Bet 365 Gold Cup. Kitty’s Light gave Tudor a great spin in last Saturday’s Grand National at Aintree before the pair finished an honourable 5th of 32 behind Willie Mullins’ I Am Maximus and the horse will head back to Sandown to defend his Bet 365 Gold Cup crown next Saturday The jockey has 2 mounts at Ayr today on Phantomofthepoints at 1.20 and Royal Mer at 3.55 and both horses won last time out for the jockey and very much in-form trainer David Pipe.

The figures in red to the right of the horses name refers to its placing in previous races. Figures following the hyphen refer to this season’s form.
Trainers’ names, pedigrees etc. have been provided for the convenience of racegoers but are not guaranteed to be accurate.
Each horse with form is given a rating, the higher the rating - the greater prospect of winning.
This is a two mile, five and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

The penultimate race this afternoon is a two mile and half a furlong handicap steeple chase for novice five-year-old and upwards which have been officially rated 0-130 As is all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 100 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95

Jockey: Henry Brooke

Summary : Whodini had previously run poorly off the same mark at Kelso a month prior but put in a much improved performance. He may have been helped by the favourite departing but ran past the winning line with plenty left in the tank.
LEADING COURSE TRAINER (19-24): L Russell (43 wins from 259 runners, 17%) runs SALAMANCA BAY TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): P Nicholls (8 wins from 35 runners, 23%) runs BEAU BALKO
LONGEST TRAVELLER: BEAU BALKO trained by P Nicholls, Ditcheat, 403 miles.
TODAY’S TIPS SALAMANCA BAY wasn’t for catching over this course and distance last month and could again be hard to reel in if he continues to progress. Fitted with a first-time hood on that occasion, the eight-year-old got better the further he went and, with the headgear retained, another bold showing can be expected. The progressive Royal Mer is officially 3lb well-in under a penalty for scoring at Wincanton, so has to be feared, while Beau Balko could be finishing strongly and is also taken seriously

Today is the
FINAL of this race series, open to Amateurs and Conditional jockeys who have ridden fewer than 10 winners.
This two mile, four and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 120 and is limited to amateur and conditional jockeys. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
SP: 7/1
Age/Weight: 11-12-0
Runners: 7
Jockey: Dylan Johnston
Trainer: Iain Jardine
Summary: Proved that age is just a number when landing this race 12 months ago. He travelled strongly into the contest and despite not being overly fluent at the last, kept on and went clear inside the final half furlong.

FANCY THAT: I Jardine won this race in 2018 and 2023 The stable runs VOIX DU REVE today
LONGEST TRAVELLER: QUEST WITH SPEED trained by J J Hanlon, Ireland.
TODAY’S TIPS DON’T TELL SU has been a bit costly to follow but broke through as his odds suggested he would at Wincanton and a mark of 117 for his handicap bow certainly looks workable. Billytherealbigred has been a revelation since going handicapping, although he is a massive 18lb higher than when completing a hat-trick at Market Rasen. Plaisir Des Flos is the one on a three-timer now and has been bumped up 10lb for a Wincanton triumph. Front View enters the equation, while Voix Du Reve wasn’t in great form when he took this 12 months ago so this season’s moderate efforts shouldn’t necessarily detract from his chances.

TODAY’S TIPS: Castletown competes in this race for a remarkable sixth time, winning it once and finishing second twice, but while undeniably well treated in this sphere, he has been off since August. Lihyan has held his form well, although his regular pilot William Maggs gets the leg-up on Barrichello, who needs to rediscover some sparkle. Glen Cannel was well ahead of Better Getalong when third at Haydock but this can go to SEASETT, who possibly found an extended 2m5f too far when attempting to supplement a Carlisle success at Wincanton.
