Saturday 9th March

@AYRRACECOURSE WWW.AYR-RACECOURSE.CO.UK OFFICIAL PROGRAMME : £3

Welcome to Ayr Racecourse for Virgin Bet Raceday our first Saturday fixture of 2024 and whether you are a first time racegoer or a seasoned racing enthusiast I hope you have an enjoyable experience with us today.

Today we are delighted to host the first ever Women’s Day Sponsored by Virgin Bet which celebrates Women in Racing. We have 2 panel discussions taking place in the lower Chancellor starting at 12 noon and what could be more apt than to have jockey Charlotte Jones participating not only on a panel discussion but also in the 4.18pm Handicap Hurdle. In addition we have panelist and leading trainer Harriet Graham entering Posh Et Noir in the 4.53pm race. We are thrilled also that Delly Innes Chief Executive of Scottish Racing and Emma Kay Walksafe Founder and CEO have agreed to join us and share their experiences. Who could possibly lead such a panel chat than presenting star Natalie Pike and we are honoured that she is visiting Ayr today

None of this would have been possible without Virgin Bet and we thank them for their continued support and input. Sponsors are incredibly important to racing and Virgin Bet take that further by being incredibly generous in their support of racing grooms and of our charity partner Ayrshire Cancer Support.

We have some excellent racing today and I really have to say thank you to all of the connections of our runners today it really is appreciated. Our feature race is the Class 3 Virgin Bet Every Saturday Money Back Handicap Chase and 3 of the 5 runners have previously won at Ayr, it should be a competitive race.

Our Food and Drink Festival provides the opportunity to savour some amazing cuisine from woodfired pizzas to fish and chips and some traditional Scottish fayre. A gin trailer, a Cocktail bar and Prosecco bar what’s not to like.

We also have Angel Star playing in the Princess Royal after racing together with an Invades DJ in the Ayrshire Suite. In the Western House, Scott Nicol plays between 5 and 8pm.

I would also like to thank our racegoers for attending today and wish you all an enjoyable and successful day out at Ayr and a safe journey home.

WELCOME TO AYR

SPONSORS

The Ayr Executive would like to thank today’s sponsors for their very generous support. We wish them and their guests an enjoyable day with us.

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time) going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

MIGHTY THUNDER WAS THE WINNER OF THE SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL ON SUNDAY, APRIL 18TH, 2021.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

Virgin Bet Raceday Preview

13:23 - Coniston George was a nice winner of a Carlisle Novice Hurdle last time out and has won here at Ayr in a bumper last year He steps up in trip but looks like he should get the extra distance. Ozzy Cosmo won here at Ayr before Christmas and the form of that race has since worked out well with the 2nd in that race winning next time out.

13:58 - Not Staying Long won here at Ayr over 3 miles on heavy ground last time out after making all the running from the front. She goes up 5 lbs in the weights but does have her chances to repeat her last effort over this shorter trip Donso Star looks to be coming into better form recently and she could be still well treated now running off 92 with Ben Smith taking off 10 lbs.

14:33 - Dreams Of Home does have many jumping questions and although he is falling in the weights and is a course and distance winner, it’s hard to make a case for him given his recent jumping displays Salamanca Bay can be a bit quirky but looks an interesting pace angle in this race A chance is taken that he can put in a bold performance as long as he does not boil over before the race

15:08 - Ruby Island is a course and distance winner and is worth a market check on his seasonal reappearance. Atlantic Dancer (NAP) looks a nice pace angle to this race, runs well on soft ground and with a clean round of jumping is tipped to put in a bold effort today.

15:43 - There might be more to come from Whodini who is going for a hat trick of wins and runs well fresh. Ballycoose might have just bumped into a good one when finishing Back to 2 ½ miles today should suit him well and looks well treated off 125.

16:18 - Artic Mann has been running well this season and a repeat of his last effort at Ayr would see him go close here. Clovis Boy can be a bit hit and miss put does have place claims if he can bounce back to form.

16:53 - Step Out was no match for the likes of Romeo Coolio and Predators Gold in previous Irish bumpers but he should find todays task a bit easier Saracen Beau is worth a market check on his debut but preference is for Kingston James who was a nice winner of a point to point last year

RACE RESULT DISTANCES

CONISTON GEORGE is 2-3 over hurdles after securing victory by two and a quarter lengths over 2m1f at Carlisle last month, and he could improve further for this step up in trip. Therefore, he looks the way to go, and his main threat might be Whistle Stop Tour The six-year-old has put in some respectable efforts this season and is taken to get involved, while Sea God is also worth considering on his debut over timber.

LADY IN THE PARK dead-heated for second when only being touched off by three quarters of a length over an extended 3m here last time. Lucinda Russell’s six-year-old is only 2lb higher on just her second handicap start and she is taken to go one better. Lucinda’s double with Traprain Law and Derryhassen Paddy at our last meeting on February 26 took the Milnathort trainer level with Nicky Richards on 145 in the modern-day record books for number of winners trained under National Hunt/jumping rules at Ayr. The Russell team have a small but select team heading for Cheltenham next week with Grand National winner Corach Rambler going for the Gold Cup next Friday, Ahoy Senor primed for Thursday’s Ryanair Chase and the respective targets for Apple Away and Giovinco still to be finalised this weekend. The stable has TEN runners on today’s card and winners at Newcastle, Kelso and Carlisle already this month suggest plenty more to come.

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - CHARLOTTE JONES

Charlotte travels to Ayr for just the one ride on Lewa House for trainer Catch Bissett at 3.00 today but the jockey has been making headlines with her exploits for main employer James Moffatt as she’s added 13 winners to her career total this season. The jockey will be a guest of Virgin Bet before racing as our sponsors celebrate Women in horse-racing with discussion panels hosted in the Lower Chancellor in the Main Stand by presenter Natalie Pike and the chat will no doubt come around to some of her other track exploits as she climbs towards the 95 winners mark which will see her lose her claiming conditional rider status.

AYR CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF RED RUM’S HISTORIC GRAND NATIONAL DOUBLE

No horse had ever won the Grand National at Aintree and the Scottish Grand National at Ayr in the same season, but Red Rum was no ordinary horse back in 1974.

Three weeks after winning at Aintree for the second time after his famous 1973 success from the luckless top-weight Crisp, Rummy was sent to Ayr to try and complete the Grand National double and, despite connections’ pre-race worry that the task might prove too difficult, jockey Brian Fletcher brought him home 4 lengths in front of the high-class Proud Tarquin, ridden by the future Lord (John) Oaksey

The roar from the 18,000 crowd was compared in one newspaper to that of the famous Hampden Roar at the home of Scottish football and the 11/8 favourite was given a hero’s welcome back into the winners’ enclosure after banking £7,922 to add to the £25,102 he’d collected in Liverpool.

Bosses here at Ayr commissioned a statue to commemorate the feat and 12 months later, Red Rum became just the second jumps horse to have a sculpted likeness on a British racecourse after Arkle’s bronze image had been erected at the home of the Cheltenham Gold Cup which he’d won 3 times.

An ordinary chaser with bad feet when purchased by Donald “Ginger” McCain for owner Noel Le Mare, Red Rum had actually contested the Scottish Grand National in 1972 when trained by Anthony Gillam but he’d gone off the 33/1 outsider of 17 under jockey Martin Blackshaw and finished an honourable 5th behind the Maurice Barnes ridden Quick Reply

McCain’s training of the horse on the beach at Southport Sands led to massive improvement and, after he’d caught and passed Richard Pitman on Crisp to win his first Aintree Grand National in 1973, he returned to win the race again under top-weight of 12-0 a year later with L’Escargot in second place.

That 1974 success prompted a public debate as to whether Red Rum should be risked at Ayr or wait to try for a third Grand National in 1975 but McCain and Le Mare bit the bullet and history was made less than a month after his second win at Aintree.

Red Rum then finished second to old rival L’Escargot in the 1975 Grand National and because the statue was being unveiled at Ayr, the horse was sent north to try and win Scotland’s big race for a second time but he proved to have had enough for that campaign and finished 7th behind Barona.

Another Aintree second to Rag Trade followed in 1976 and, when the now 12-year-old took his Aintree record to 1-1-2-2-1 by completing a historic Grand National treble in 1977, the decision was taken to have a 4th crack at that year’s Scottish Grand National where the horse finished a well beaten favourite behind Harry Bell’s Sebastian V.

Other horses have won the Scottish Grand National (both Ayr and Bogside) and the Grand National at Aintree in different orders and in different years, but no horse had completed the historic double in the same season and Ayr is honoured to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the horse’s achievement in 2024.

Red Rum won the 1974 race on Saturday April 20 and the 2024 renewal will be run on the exact same day

THIS DAY IN
The Red Rum statue can be seen outside the Western House Hotel at the southern end of the racecourse.

This represents a drop in grade for PARK ANNONCIADE, who performed with credit in a valuable contest at Musselburgh last month. The six-year-old won a couple of times in November and gets the vote ahead of the capable Bois Guillbert and Ruby Island, who was a progressive novice last season and makes her return after almost a year off the track. Atlantic Dancer and Kerosine Light are not to be ruled out either.

A determined winner over C&D when last seen in November, WHODINI may not be ideally suited by soft ground, but he arrives at his favourite track following a couple of taking victories and the hat-trick looks very much on the cards. Ballycoose will appreciate going back up in distance, having scored over C&D in January, while Dubai Days is another to consider off a mark 1lb lower than his last victory.

RACE RESULT DISTANCES

A chance can be taken on LAHARDAUN, who showed signs of promise across his three qualifying runs. An opening mark of 88 looks more than fair and, with the step up in trip likely to suit, it would come as no surprise if he improved markedly on his handicap debut. Clovis Boy has improved since turning his attentions to handicaps and is likely to prove popular, along with Sanosuke, who finished third at Musselburgh last time having scored there the start before.

RACE RESULT DISTANCES

The vote goes to YAKALEO, who shaped with significant promise when finishing third on his racecourse debut at Musselburgh in December. Nicky Richards’ charge might not want ground conditions to deteriorate too much, though, having been withdrawn on account of soft ground at Kelso last month, but he ought to hold every chance if lining up. Irish raider Step Out has shown ability and is respected with a first-time tongue-tie applied, while point-to-point winner Kingston James is another to consider.
