WELCOME TO AYR RACECOURSE

Welcome to Ayr Racecourse on what is recognised as International Women’s Day, although more on that later

Whether you are a first time racegoer or a seasoned racing enthusiast, I hope you have an enjoyable experience with us today

I’d like to thank our owners and trainers for choosing to run their horses here today and I wish all connections the very best of luck and sincerely hope you have a successful day and return again in the future.

We welcome both Weatherbys and Virgin Bet as sponsors of our 6 races today and we thank them for their continued support of our race programme.

Saturday 9th sees the course hold the inaugural Women’s Day sponsored by Virgin Bet giving race fans an opportunity to celebrate women in racing. Two special panel discussions will take place with broadcasting star Natalie Pike hosting the events that feature some of the top women in racing. Much more on that in tomorrow’s racecard and what a good excuse to come back.

We have entertainment after racing in the Princess Royal suite and also have Paul Scully playing in the Western House hotel between 5 and 8pm, there should be something for everyone.

I would also like to thank our racegoers for attending today and wish you all an enjoyable and successful day and a safe journey home.

MEET THE RACECOURSE TEAM

SPONSORS

The Ayr Executive would like to thank today’s sponsors for their very generous support. We wish them and their guests an enjoyable day with us.

8 Form guide

9 Age

10 Weight

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time) going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

MIGHTY THUNDER WAS THE WINNER OF THE SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL ON SUNDAY, APRIL 18TH, 2021.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

RACE RESULT DISTANCES

AYIKO was pitched in at the deep end when finishing last in a Grade 2 bumper at the Dublin Racing Festival, having struck here the time before. Now switching his attention to hurdling, Stuart Crawford’s gelding makes plenty of appeal and gets the vote to make a winning start in this sphere. Hazy Glen went close at Newcastle, but will need to handle a drop in trip. With that in mind, the main threat could prove to be Ridin Solo following his runner-up efforts at Sedgefield and Carlisle.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - SANDY THOMSON

Bases at Greenlaw in the Borders, near Duns, Sandy has 4 horses declared on today’s card and teams up with stable jockey and son-in law Ryan Mania with 3 of them, including the sure to be strongly fancied Leading Force in the featured two and a half mile handicap chase at 3.30 The Thomson stable’s latest winners came here at Ayr on February 26 with the hugely promising I Am Max, closely followed the next day at Catterick with Wolfburg but the trainer has been frugal with his number of runners in recent weeks and the yard will have plenty of horses lined up for the spring, including the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival back here at Ayr next month.

15% SUCCESS RATE AT AYR OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS 19 WINS FROM 129 RUNNERS

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - TOM CANNON

The jockey is at Ayr today for two rides on horses trained by Scottish Grand National winning boss Alan King (Godsmejudge 2013), the English based Scottish trainer having horses running back at his home track ahead of next week’s Cheltenham Festival. Tom’s latest winner came at Plumpton on Monday and the jockey will be on one of the highest-profile horses of the week at Cheltenham next Wednesday when he gets the leg up on King’s Queen Mother Champion Chase contender Edwardstone, winner of the Arkle Chase at the Festival for the King/Cannon combination in 2022. Tom’s rides today are in the 3.00 on Broomhill Road and the 4.30 on Kay Tara Tara.

SERIOUS EGO was in fine form earlier in the season, with a brace of victories at Hexham in November before a couple of underwhelming performances. His most recent third at Sedgefield was a step back in the right direction and the use of Conor Rabbitt’s 5lb claim gives him every chance of a decent showing. Lifetime Adventure may benefit from a first-time tongue-tie, while the consistent Cancan and handicap debutant River Ayr are others to note.

Broomhill Road hasn’t achieved what his bumper form suggested he might be capable of in three attempts over hurdles so far. That said, the five-year-old now sports a visor for the first time on his handicap debut and it would be no surprise to see him step forward. However, WEAVER’S ANSWER is 5lb well-in under a penalty after routing the opposition at Plumpton 11 days ago and the drop in trip shouldn’t be a concern. Beat The Retreat and Follow Charlie are others likely to be in the mix.

2ND 3RD 4TH TIME

It is difficult to look past ARTIC ROW, who has an excellent record here. The seven-year-old should be able to manage a 7lb rise and is taken to uphold form with the reopposing Monochromix (second) from their meeting over C&D last month. Consistent maiden Leading Force and Coniston Clouds, who was a comfortable winner at Catterick before coming down when sent off favourite at Sedgefield, also enter the equation.

DISTANCES

An easy winner on his chasing/handicap debut at Musselburgh last month on the step up in trip, WHOSMYDADDY should have plenty more improvement forthcoming and an 8lb rise could prove lenient as he attempts to follow up. That may be at the main expense of Heritier De Sivola, who had Baron Briggs over two lengths behind him in third when runner-up over C&D last time out. totewin: Whosmydaddy

RACE RESULT DISTANCES

This represents a significant drop in grade for EL ELEFANTE and a return to softer ground should also play to her strengths as she looks to return to winning ways for her in-form connections. Micks Jet is likely to pose a serious challenge following an easy success at Musselburgh last month, while Kay Tara Tara is not to be ruled out either on the rise in distance.
