Our feature race today is the 1.35pm Win Your Wedding at Western House Novice Handicap Chase and we have two Irish runners looking to take the spoils back home, it looks a very competitive race. In addition to top equines, we’re spoiled for choice with the very best of jockeys including current champion jockey Brian Hughes and current leader in the championship Sean Bowen. Sean has an impressive 23% strike rate and will be looking to maintain that form.

TODAY’S TOP JOCKEY - SEAN BOWEN The older of the two Bowen brothers plying their trade at the very top of the jumping game is back at Ayr for 2 rides as he looks to build on a very healthy lead over Harry Cobden at the top of the Jockeys’ Championship. Sean is no overnight sensation as he shone in pony races and point-to-points before winning on his very first ride under rules when Kozmina Bay won at Uttoxeter in December 2013 when the jockey was just 16. The Champion Conditional Jockeys’ title followed in 2014/15 and amongst other big-race wins, a Scottish Champion Hurdle followed here at Ayr in 2022 on John McConnell’s Anna Bunina.

TODAY’S TOP TRAINER - NICKY RICHARDS The Penrith trainer landed a treble here last Monday with Florida Dreams, Better Getalong and Aubis Walk and Richards has declared 5 horses to run on today’s extra card at Ayr. Soft Risk could well be the star of the show in the novices’ handicap chase at 1.35 with the 7 year-old racing for the first time since finishing second in a handicap hurdle here on the opening day of the Scottish Grand National meeting in 2022. The gelding had previously won his debut bumper and first hurdles starts at Ayr and a debut chase win would make for a unique hat-trick with his course form figures reading 1-1-2.

Fitted with a tongue-tie for the first time and on his second start following wind surgery, a far better performance is expected. He is preferred to Blow The Budget, who performed with credit at Kelso last time, and Spit Spot, who would hold every chance if taking to this new discipline having achieved a peak rating of 73 when trained on the Flat.

Busty Boy exploited an opening mark of 100 over the extended 2m7f at Kelso on his penultimate start before finding a progressive rival too strong last time and he is likely to enter calculations.

Having said that, ARTIC ROW could get the better of that rival on his second start over the larger obstacles. Nick Alexander’s charge had excuses when pulled up last time, given the saddle slipped, and this may prove to be a solid opportunity. Course specialist Ardera Cross is also respected.

There was plenty to like about AYIKO’s first start when filling the runner-up spot at Roscommon in June and Stuart Crawford’s gelding gets the vote to put that experience to best use. Malicash shaped with a fair amount of encouragement on his racecourse debut when third at Kelso last month. The four-year-old is entitled to step forward from that display, while Young Getaway boasts a pedigree with more speed than stamina, being related to Morgiana Hurdle winner Iktitaf, and could have a say in proceedings.
