Joe Fanning’s win in the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup on Significantly crowned a magnificent 3 days for the veteran jockey and the now 53 year-old extended his lead over reigning champion Paul Mulrennan to 6 points. Joe’s 3 winners, 2 seconds and a third pushed him further clear of Paul, with Andrew Mullen staying in third on 55 and Jason Hart the best of the rest on 42 points.

Jim Goldie’s looked like retaining his Ayr title for some time now and the trainer weighed in with 2 winners, a second and a third over the 3 days to move on to 120 points. Iain Jardine consolidated his second place position with a winner, 2 seconds and a third taking him to 75 and David O’Meara’s excellent showing at the meeting moved his total up from 24 to 39 and into third place.

Summerstorm Bloodstock’s win with Cosa Sara took the reigning champion owners back into a clear top position on 15 points ahead of the Reluctant Suitors who moved into a second place on their own thanks to the win of Ayr Poet.

DAVID O’MEARA

14% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS

37 WINS FROM 274 RUNNERS

The Yorkshire trainer’s Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup win last year with Summerghand was his second after Louis The Pious in 2014 but he had to settle for a Bronze Cup 1-2 last week with Ascot Adventure and Cold Stare with the last named horse gaining Saturday compensation here 24 hours later O’Meara kept the winners flowing all last week and he saddles 7 runners today, including his Gold Cup meeting winners Hortzaadar and Cold Stare.

JIM GOLDIE

10% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS

73 WINS FROM 701 RUNNERS

The Uplawmoor trainer has gone all out to defend his Top Trainer title at Ayr this season and he starts today’s penultimate meeting of the track’s season with what looks like an unassailable lead over Iain Jardine. Jim saddled 27 runners over the 3 days of the Gold Cup meeting and as well as his winners, plenty of runners outran their odds. Today’s team numbers FOURTEEN horses including 3 in each of the divisions of the 7 furlongs handicap and punters will make sure his horses are well backed as usual..

CHARLIE JOHNSTON

23% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS

9 WINS FROM 40 RUNNERS

Charlie’s across-the-cards 4-timer on Saturday took his first season tally to 147 and the Middleham trainer has 4 runners here today after a couple of horses travelled to Hamilton yesterday The trainer’s excellent form was emphasised further with Sacred Angel’s third in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday on the same afternoon as Dutch Decoy finished 6th in the 34 runner Cambridgeshire Handicap.

JOE FANNING

WINS FROM 289 RIDES

Last month’s Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup winning jockey spent the morning after his big-race win celebrating his 53rd birthday and the evergreen rider is showing no signs of slowing up, despite the current circus surrounding his fellow veteran rider Franke Dettori. Joe’s comeback from injury this year didn’t get the fairytale ending he’d hoped for when Subjectivist could only manage third in the Ascot Gold Cup but the rider had his day in the sun at Ayr on Significantly 10 days ago and had a memorable day at Chester on Saturday with 4 winners.

PAUL MULRENNAN

15% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS

58 WINS FROM 375 RIDES

The reigning Ayr champion jockey has been doing all he can to retain his title and the rider has plenty of chances to put points on the board this afternoon as the Flat season draws to a close. Paul’s partnership with trainer Jim Goldie continues to flourish with the pair teaming up to finish 4th in York’s Ebor Handicap with Euchen Glen before the horse just failed to land the Kilkerran Cup on the opening day of the Gold Cup meeting here the weekend before last. Paul rode a winner for Sir Mark Prescott at Ripon on Saturday and his services continue to be in high demand.

BEN CURTIS

16% SU CC ES S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS

58 WINS FROM 190 RIDES

Ben had a fantastic three days at Ayr last month with his 4 winners including Bronze Cup success on Ascot Adventure and a memorable Group 3 win on Prime Art for Johnny Murtagh in the Virgin Bet Firth Of Clyde Stakes, Scotland’s only Group race. The rider added to last Saturday’s double at Ayr by recording another brace of winners at Ripon on Saturday and today’s bookings suggest he could have another very good afternoon.

HORTZADAR had Ventura Rascal (second) and Hale End (fifth) behind when scoring by a length over C&D last month and he was put up 3lb for that effort. The eight-year-old remains well below his previous winning mark of 91 in April last year and he looks ready to strike once again. If Cosa Sara can run to the level of her penultimate start, when successful over 7f at this track, then she could also have a say.

Course specialist Ayr Poet returns to a more suitable trip after a near-miss over 1m4f at Hamilton last week and should go well off a 2lb lower mark, but the progressive STAR START is just preferred. The penny has really dropped for the Rebecca Menzies-trained gelding, who made it two wins from his last three starts when scoring over this trip at Beverley last week and he escapes a penalty for that apprentice handicap success. Montevideo is respected on her handicap debut.

Master Zoffany has to be respected following his win at Chester a month ago, while similar comments apply to William Dewhirst and Autumn Festival following their recent victories. That said, preference is for ABDUCTION, whose recent effort in the Silver Cup at this venue can easily be forgiven. Prior to that, the five-year-old was not disgraced in a valuable race over 7f at Ascot and a reproduction of that form would give him a big chance.

KALGANOV (second) had Jkr Cobbler (third) behind over C&D on his penultimate start before following up that effort with victory at Redcar. The son of Gutaifan looks to have been found another golden opportunity to strike. As for the latter, he recorded a hat-trick prior to his defeat last time and can get involved once again. Of the remainder, New Tycoon makes the most appeal on his first start for the Liam Bailey yard.

Stewards Note:

PURPLE MARTINI: Following its run on 1/8/2023 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run.

Probable S.P’s: 11-2 Monhammer (GB), Darbucks (IRE), 7-1 Pallas Lord (IRE), Global Humor (USA), 15-2 First Greyed (IRE), 8-1 Alpine Sierra (IRE), 12-1 Purple Martini (GB), 16-1 Debater (GB), 25-1 Zebra Star (IRE), 33-1 Gordonstoun (IRE), Genevieve (GB), 100-1 Flash Bulb (IRE)

The consistent MONHAMMER is a specialist at this intermediate trip and, as a previous C&D winner, he ticks the right boxes given his proven versatility with regard to the ground. David Allan also knows how to get a good tune out of the selection and he could be the one to beat today. Alpine Sierra and First Greyed are a couple of others with respectable course form, while Purple Martini still has relatively low mileage and can figure off just 2lb above his last winning mark.

DISTANCES

Michael’s Pledge has been threatening to score and it would be no surprise to see him finally get off the mark here, but he may have to play second fiddle again, this time to AIGHEAR Despite some good efforts in defeat this summer, Jim Goldie’s mare returns off a 1lb lower mark than when she won this race 12 months ago and she should relish the step back up in trip. Cantalupo Bella separated a couple of subsequent winners when second over 2m at Newbury last time and is another to note.
