1.15 - Revich bounced back to good form last time out at Chester finishing 3rd in a class 2 handicap over 7 furlongs. Hollie Doyle takes the ride on Revich this time around. He handles better ground well and looks to have decent claims here today
Isla Kai won last time out over a mile at Ripon and is potentially still well treated off a revised mark of 93 Redarna is another horse to watch out for. He seemed to regain his from last time out winning at Carlisle over 7 furlongs and a reproduction of that race would see him go close here.
1.50 - My Prospero drops back to listed company and looks the one to beat here. The William Haggas trained colt finished 2nd in a Group 2 race at York in July and finished a close 3rd in the Champion Stakes at Ascot last year He gets first time cheek-pieces applied today and stall 3 looks to be a nice draw for him. Pride Of America and Royal Rhyme may have place claims but will need to improve if My Prospero shows up in good form.
2.25 - Gulliver was an impressive winner in a Racing League race at Southwell last week and the 9 year old gelding could be one to watch out for although stall 22 is probably not ideal. Jump The Gun is due to go up in the weights as is Rathbone. Jump The Run is carrying bottom weigh and was running respectably in listed company last year He looks like he may have bounced back to some good from after having a less than ideal season before his last win on soft ground at Doncaster Monsieur Codi (NAP) finished runner up in last years Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup and looks a danger here for Richard Fahy breaking out of stall 13 He looks to be ground versatile and ran a nice race at Ripon in the Great St Wilfrid Handicap last month.
3.00 - Raqiya was an impressive winner in a Novice Stakes race at Haydock earlier this month and looks like the one they will all have to beat. There are a few interesting fillies here however to take her on including the Irish raider Navassa Island who comes here off the back of winning a Curragh maiden over 6 furlongs last month. The form of that race has since works out really well with the 2nd and 3rd both winning next time out. Great Generation is 2 wins from 2 starts and looks set to give Raqiya a big challenge.
3.35 - Albasheer looks to have a nice draw and comes here on good form. There could be plenty more to come from the Archie Watson trained gelding who impressed at York last month. Summerghand won this race last year from stall 12. He carries top weight this year but is coming here off the back of two good runs and has a big chance of making it two Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cups in a row. Juan Les Pins is another horse coming here on good form and a repeat performance of his listed race run at York would see him go close for Michael Appleby
4.10 - Sailthisshipalone got off to winning ways last time out at Thirsk and a mark of 83 looks fair Making Dreams has been running very well and looks consistent. Brandon Wilkie takes off 7 lbs and is the choice selection to make it into the winner’s enclosure again. City Burglar is a danger, the Cracksman colt has ran well in his 3 starts and further improvement is expected.
4.45 - Gainsbourg likes it here around Ayr and a drop back to 7 furlongs is no issue for him and likely to bring on more improvement. Yaaser has been running well over 7 furlongs for Jim Goldie and was a nice recent winner in a Racing League race at Southwell. He now runs off a mark of 78 but you would expect there still is more to come from the 5 year old.
5.20 - Dark Moon Rising has been running well since stepped up in trip. He found a few too good for him last time out at York but this race looks an easier assignment. Sir Chauvelin is sure to stay todays trip and comes here off the back of a nice win at Southwell and the 11 year old cannot be discounted for trainer Jim Goldie. Mr Curiosity carries top weight but is a danger here given his effort in a class 2 handicap at York last month.
Welcome to the richest and most prestigious day of the Flat season in Scotland and one of British racing’s iconic meetings – the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival.
We have an eight-race card that includes the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold and Silver Cups, Scotland’s only Group race – the Virgin Bet Firth of Clyde Stakes and the Virgin Bet Doonside Cup, Listed race it’s fair to say we have an embarrassment of riches this afternoon. The Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup itself is the richest flat race in Scotland worth £180,000
The Doonside Cup is our premier middle distance race at Ayr and is undoubtedly one of the highlights of today’s racing but we are also proud of having Scotland’s only Group race the Firth of Clyde Fillies Stakes over 6f, it truly is the finest racing in Scotland.
I’d like to say a huge thanks on behalf of everyone here at Ayr to Virgin Bet for their sponsorship of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and nine races including the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup.
This is the third time Virgin Bet have been sponsors of the Ayr Gold Cup and I am delighted they have chosen to put their name to the great race and get behind such a wonderful three days of racing. For the first time at the festival, and unique in UK racing Virgin Bet will reward all 25 grooms for their efforts ahead of the signature Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup race. The winner of the ‘Best Turned Out’ award will win £200, double the prize from 2022, whilst each of the remaining 24 non-winning grooms will also receive an unprecedented runners-up prize of £50 Outside the Ayr Gold Cup, Virgin Bet is increasing the ‘Best Turned Out’ award prize on all of their sponsored races across the festival, and as a unique further prize, all winning grooms will be entered into a draw to win an exclusive ‘voucher’ worth £1,000
I’d also like to thank our other sponsors, The European Breeders Fund, Thistle Cabs is a well-known local taxi company, Jordan Electrics are another long standing sponsor who we are very thankful to and we also warmly welcome a new sponsor Bearingboys who round the day off with the final race at 5.20pm. My thanks to all of our sponsors without them a day like this packed full of quality racing would just not be possible.
This afternoon’s Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup is once again full of highly rated sprinters hoping to win the famous trophy for their connections and I am sure we will witness a race that will long live in our memories.
I’d like to thank the team at Ayr for all of their hard work and endeavours in making these days work.
Finally, I thank you for your support and hope you enjoy this very special day’s racing and entertainment.

Galashiels based Katie is well on the way to setting a new seasonal best with a growing stable of horses which is gradually improving in quality The trainer had her first juvenile winner this year and she warmed up for this week’s Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival with a winner, second and third from 5 runners at Musselburgh’s 2-day fixture last weekend. Stable stalwart Gweedore looks like carrying Scottish hopes in today’s Gold Cup, with no horse trained this side of Hadrian’s Wall having won the race since Roman Warrior in 1975

Watson had a memorable Royal Ascot with a remarkable 3 winners at this year’s meeting back in June and his stable form has continued at a high level as he continues to improve his annual winners’ tally The trainer has an excellent record at Ayr with a winners to runners ratio of better than 1 in 4 and Shadwell cast-off Albasheer (130,000 guineas) has long been his big hope for today’s Gold Cup Watson saddled the runner-up in Sweden’s Stockholm Cup with Outbox last Sunday and one place better today would crown a fantastic season.

Varian made history this month when last year’s St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov added the all-aged Irish version at the Curragh, the first horse to complete the double since Touching Wood won both races in 1982. The trainer has already won a big-race at Ayr this season when his subsequent Group 1 heroine Al Husn won the Listed Rothesay Stakes here in May and he landed a 181/1 TREBLE on this very day last year, when he also had three at Newbury and one at Newmarket to complete a magnificent SEVEN on the day

Hollie hit the headlines at last week’s St Leger meeting with her ride on Doncaster Cup winner Trueshan and the jockey hit the 100 winners mark for the season at Newcastle earlier this week. The Doyle century was brought up by the Archie Watson trained Korroor and it’s the jockey’s association with Watson which could bring big-race success at Ayr today after an excellent season in which they’ve teamed up for multiple big-race wins.

PJ is a member of that elite club of Flat jockeys to have tasted big-race success over jumps with the rider having enjoyed his biggest success in that sphere here at Ayr. McDonald was the jockey who rode Hot Weld to victory for Ferdy Murphy in the Scottish Grand National of 2007 and the rider chalked up his biggest Flat success last season on the recently retired Pyledriver in Ascot’s King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, when that horse’s regular pilot Martin Dwyer was sidelined through injury

Hawick born Hart has gone from strength-tostrength in recent seasons with the former champion apprentice hogging the headlines for his exploits on John Quinn’s flying filly Highfield Princess. The jockey has also struck up a Group-race winning association with the Charlie Johnston stable and he continues to be a rider in high demand when not booked-up by the Quinn yard. Hart rode current sprinting sensation Big Evs to win Listed and Group 3 events this year at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood.
The final day of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival is Scotland’s richest day of racing on the flat and has produced some memorable winners. Here are five outstanding horses who won on this day
Summerghand wasn’t winning out of turn when he landed last year’s Virgin Bet Gold Cup as he’d previously chalked up 14 successes without landing a major handicap. The now 9-year-old has since won a Listed race at Lingfield and added a valuable sprint handicap at York with a recent 4th at the Curragh proving his current wellbeing. Danny Tudhope’s been in the saddle for the horse’s last 4 wins and the Irvineborn jockey was winning his first Ayr Gold Cup 12 months ago.
William Haggas won an Ayr Gold Cup with Nahaarr in 2020 and the trainer was completing a big-race double after saddling Addeybb to win the Listed Doonside Cup. Addeybb arrived at Ayr after a spring campaign which had yielded two Australian Grade Ones at Rosehill and Randwick, but he’d also been a Group 2 winner in Britain at Sandown and soft ground was key. The gelding proved as much by winning Ascot’s Group 1 Champion Stakes on his next start after Ayr and he won another Group 1 at Randwick before ending his career with a Group 2 success at Longchamp last October
Mark Johnston’s filly won the Group 3 Firth Of Clyde Stakes for one of the trainer’s Kingsley Park syndicates under Joe Fanning, the filly having been picked up for 3,000 euros in Ireland as a yearling. The filly went on to win two more Group 3 races at Newmarket and York, but her Ayr win was a career highlight and she was sold at a massive profit for breeding duties before coming back into training to finish second in 3 Listed races last summer
Frankie Dettori is the only jockey still riding to have won 2 Ayr Gold Cups and the second of the soon to be retiring Italian’s winners came on Redford for David Nicholls. The late trainer was winning the race for what would be the 6th and final time and Frankie had won the race the year before on Jimmy Styles for Clive Cox. Redford won off 97 and followed up at Ascot a week later off 103 but he only ran 4 more times and never won again.
He has won four times from 5f to 6f on ground varying from good to soft. Beaten 7l behind Mecca’s Angel at 20-1 when 9th of 19 on his latest outing in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York over 5f (good) last month. Drop back into handicaps should suit.

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.
Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

Our opener today is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

This one mile, two-furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st for 3-y-o colts and geldings and 8st 9lb for fillies the same age, with 9st 5lb for 4-y-o+ colts and geldings and 9st for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level
3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for a Group 1 or 2 win.

With the notable omission of William Haggas’ My Prospero, ROYAL RHYME can cash in and make his mark at this level. The son of Lope De Vega turned a warm handicap into a procession at Goodwood last month, as he scooted clear on rain-softened ground. Pride Of America is 2lb clear on official ratings, but having to concede 5lb to the former might be a tough ask. After every race the official handicapper reviews all performances and alters the runners rating, either up or down, in accordance with their performance. A below-par effort could result in the drop of a point or two whilst a barnstorming victory could see a horse’s rating increase significantly However, if a recent winner runs again soon after its win, there will not be time to reassess their performance, so they will be allotted a mandatory 6lb penalty This handicap has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards and will be run over six furlongs - a consolation race for those who just missed out on the Gold Cup later on today

In another wide-open renewal, a chance can be taken on WOVEN, who was runner-up in this race last year off 4lb lower The seven-year-old has competed over 7f the last twice and he now returns to this sprinting distance, which could spark him back to form in order to go close. Call Me Ginger has won two out of his last three starts and, in his current form, he is difficult to dismiss. Others to note are Bernardo O’Reilly and the hat-trick seeking Rathbone TOTEWIN:

This six-furlong race for two-year-old fillies is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things. Initially, all runners will carry 9st 2lb before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for those successful in a Group 2 or Group 1.

Distance Six furlongs Prize money £180,000
The Ayr Gold Cup was first run on the original Ayr Racecourse on the south side of Ayr in 1804 and restricted to horses trained in Scotland. It was won by Chancellor, who also won the race the following year The race was run over two miles in those days.
In 1907 the Ayr Gold Cup was run over the new course and over a new distance of six furlongs. The reason for the change in distance was that the Duke of Montrose wanted his horse Raeberry to have a better chance of winning the race. The Duke’s plans were scuppered when Charis won the race.
Since 1980 five jockeys have won the race twice – John Lowe – Sparkling Boy (1980), Final Shot (1990); Jimmy Fortune Joveworth (1989),Coastal Bluff (1996);Daryll Holland Royal Figurine (1995), Continent (2001); Adrian Nicholls Bahmaian Pirate (2000), Funfair Wane (2002); Frankie Dettori Jimmy Styles (2009), Redford (2010).
Bielsa’s success two years ago gave trainer Kevin Ryan his fifth winner of the Ayr Gold Cup. His previous successes came with Brando (2016), Captain Ramius (2012), Our Jonathan (2011) and Advanced (2007). The winningmost trainer of the race is the late Dandy Nicholls with six wins.
Since 1980 only four favourites have won. These are Coastal Bluff in 1996 at 3-1, Don’t Touch in 2015 at 6-1, Son Of Rest, who was co-favourite at 5-1 when dead heating with Baron Bolt in 2019 and Nahaarr in 2020 who was sent off at 7-2.
Virgin Bet was launched in 2019 and is one of the UK’s fastest growing sportsbooks. This is the third year of sponsoring the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and nine of the races, including the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold, Silver and Bronze Cups.
The Ayr Gold Cup has built in stature over the years and it now takes a very highly rated horse to win. In 2016 Brando, with a BHA rating of 110, became the highest rated horse to win the race. In 2019 dead heaters Baron Bolt and Son Of Rest were both rated 101, Nahaarr in 2020 had a rating of 100 and last year’s winner Bielsa ran off 98 In 2000 Bahamian Pirate win the race off 86 which shows just how far the race has come.
Chancellor won the race, in both 1804 and 1805 and there is a restaurant on the racecourse named after him as there is Roman Warrior, winner of the race in 1975 And the Be Friendly Bae is named after the horse of the same name, winner of the Gold Cup in 1967 and owned by the late Sir Peter O’Sullevan.
*Max Free Bet £10. 1st cash bet up to £10 must be placed within 48hrs of selected race/s (main market, ex antepost & specials). Win part e/w bet. Free Bet: use in 7 days on sportsbook. Stake not returned. T&Cs apply.
This afternoon’s feature race is a historic six-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

A cracking renewal of the Ayr Gold Cup with the past two winners, Bielsa and Summerghand both in the line-up again, but its last year’s third who catches the eye. JUAN LES PINS was just a length and a half on that occasion and although he’s 6lb higher this time around, he continues to improve and is due to go up 8lb after this. Significantly was narrowly denied in the Portland at Doncaster last week and must enter calculations if rocking up here in the same form. Orazio can be forgiven his run in the mud at Goodwood last month and must be respected along with Montassib, who has place claims.

Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post.
A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry This particular one mile race has a maximum rating of 90, so some classy two-year-olds will line up.

The penultimate race of the afternoon is a seven-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61-80 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

Yaaser is a big player if turning up after Friday’s Bronze Cup engagement, while Riot and the unexposed Angel From Above are others to consider

The final race this afternoon is another handicap race, this time for stayers and run over one mile and about five furlongs. It has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which have been officially rated between 76 and 95 Like all handicaps on this afternoon’s card this means that should a horse rated 90 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85 unless a 6lb penalty is added.

Summary: It was a three-timer on the day for the Varian/Mitchell duo as the favourite Aimeric justfied his market support to win a hard fought contest. Despite starting awkwardly, he battled back well, taking the lead right before the line in a photo finish.
