1.15 - Lunar Streets steps up in trip to 7 furlongs for the first time. Judging by her 2nd place finish last time out at Carlisle, where she stayed on well towards the end, she should stay the extra furlong today and is expected to be in with a shout at the business end of the race. The is a possibility that Never Fear could make the running and is a potential pace angle to the race. Miss Roberts carries top weight in this race and was unlucky not to win in her last two starts. She found the Group 2 race at Curragh a bit too touch in July but since she stepped up to 7 furlongs and back in class she looks a more exciting prospect and is fancied to defy top weight here.
1.45 - Government Call gets first time cheek-pieces today He looks to have tactical speed but can make the running here if needed. The Group 3 race at Kempton proved a step too much for the colt but a mark of 89 looks surmountable. Love Billy Boy ran a big race at the Ebor meeting in York last month. He failed to win next time out when going off favourite over 5 furlongs at Lingfield and has a tendency to hang to the left but remains a danger here. Sergeant Wilko was no match for the likes of Big Evs and Kylian in his last two starts but this assignment today is not as daunting a challenge and ais worth a market check now stepping up in trip and back in class.
2.15 - Purosangue (NAP) looks a hot prospect here for Andrew Balding. A repeat performance of his big run at Goodwood last month may be enough for him to take the spoils in this listed sprint. Beautiful Diamond went off 11/4 favourite in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot and ran a very good 3rd place. She stepped up to 6 furlongs in the Lowther Stakes and ran a very credible race. She should be suited stepping back to 5 furlongs and has serious claims now running in listed company Toca Madera has form tying in with Purosangre over 6 furlongs and has every chance now back over 5 furlongs and on better ground than he had at Goodwood last time out.
2.50 - Queen Me should be able to run a big race now dropping back to listed company She ran very credible races in both the Nunthorpe Stakes and Commonwealth Cup and ran a close 3rd here at Ayr in the Group 3 Virgin Bet Firth Of Clyde Fillies’ Stakes over 6 furlongs. Funny Story has her chances for Ralph Beckett. She was narrowly beaten in a listed race at Pontefract last month and a repeat performance of that run should see her go close today Aussie Girl was no match for Ocean Quest in the Ballyogan Stakes at Naas last month but the Irish raider has been on some great form recently and no surprise if she took the spoils considering those recent from lines.
4.00 - Cosmos Raj had excuses in running last time out at Ripon and looks a big danger from stall 2 on good ground over a mile. Time To Rumble won here at Ayr in July and has place claims again today now off a mark of 55 Bicep is due to go up 2 lbs in the weights and looked like he was getting back to form last time out at Carlisle. Pembrokeshire steps up in distance for trainer Iain Jardine. The gelding showed some promise early in his career but has not backed that from up this year Maybe the step up in trip and a revised mark of 68 might help his chances.
4.35 - End Zone certainly had place claims and has tactical speed here. A mark of 62 here gives him a chance to get back to some better form. Ayr Poet is a consistent type with plenty of experience around this track. A rating of 66 looks fair and a bold effort is expected here again today Another Jim Goldie trained runner who is in with a shout is Alpine Sierra Stall 13 may not be ideal but a mark of 67 could see him go close here.
5.10 - Belle Of Annandale comes back to flat racing after a brief spell of running over hurdles recently She would look to have every chance here off a flat mark of 66 and William Pyle taking off 5 lbs. Bobby Shaftoe was no match for the impressive Marbuzet last time out at Musselburgh but finished well ahead of the rest of the field that day He has shown plenty of good form this year most likely brought on by being stepped up in trip. A big effort is expected today from the Jim Goldie trained gelding.
WELCOME to Virgin Bet Ladies Day featuring some of the best racing in Scotland plus the Style Awards with fabulous prizes on offer.
The racing features the Virgin Bet Ayr Bronze Cup plus two Class 1 Listed races
the British EBF Stallions Harry Rosebery Stakes and the Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies’ Stakes.
The Harry Rosebery invariably features some high class two year-olds and over the 5f distance is one of the shortest and fastest races that we have at Ayr.
One of the wonderful aspects of these 2yo races is that very often we are witnessing the stars of the future. Last year for example, Caernarfon who prevailed in the 7f Fillies Nursery Handicap went on to win a Listed race at Newmarket before finishing 3rd in one of the Classics, the Oaks.
The Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies’ Stakes is blessed with quality throughout and we have last years winner Gale Force Maya defending her title as well as last years second Pink Crystal hoping to go one better The field is headed by Perdika who has already prevailed in two Listed contests in her career and will be seeking a hat trick for the George Boughey stable.
Immediately following the Arran Scottish Sprint, we have the Virgin Bet Ayr Bronze Cup with 25 sprinters charging down the six furlongs home straight and the precursor before tomorrow’s sprint double header of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold and Silver Cups, where will the winner come from!
Our Style Awards take place on the Champagne Lawns during the afternoon and there are some terrific prizes including a £500 voucher for Remus Uno, a £350 voucher for Rule 42 Boutique and a 3-course meal for 4 at the flagship Virgin Hotel Restaurant Commons Club in Glasgow amongst others. There are four categories – Most Stylish Lady, Most Stylish Gent, Most Stylish Hat/Headpiece and Most Stylish Couple.
There are details in this racecard on the Awards and I would like to thank all the sponsors
A very special thanks to today’s sponsors Virgin Bet, the European Breeders Fund, Tennents Lager and Remus Uomo. The loyal and continued support of our sponsors enables us to stage a meeting of this quality and be in a position to welcome so many top horses, trainers and jockeys to Ayr.
I am always acutely aware of the effort and dedication put in by the team at Ayr Racecourse to ensure this week’s Festival is highly enjoyable.
I hope you enjoy today’s racing, our style awards and entertainment.
As well as our regular bars and cafes from everyone in the Ayrshire Suite and Courtyard, plus in the Princess Royal Suite and on the Champagne Lawns for Club ticket holders, we have a whole host of additional vendors outdoors throughout the course for you to enjoy...

The trainer has already won the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup FIVE times and he’ll equal the modern’ day record of 6 wins set by the late David Nicholls if he can repeat the feat this weekend. Ryan’s horses have been in excellent form coming into the Gold Cup meeting and one of his Ayr winners at last year’s Gold Cup Festival, Hi Royal, went on to finish second to Chaldean in this year’s 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Jardine’s Carrutherstown stable has been having a fantastic year and the trainer added to the excellent returns from his growing Flat team by completing a jumps 5-timer with Born Famous, which culminated in success in a £50,000 chase at Market Rasen and was extended to SIX straight wins next time out at Perth. Jardine started Ayr Gold Cup week with a winner at Thirsk on Monday and the trainer will be well represented over the next 2 days after declaring 7 horses to run here yesterday.

8 WINS FROM 19 RUNNERS
The Newmarket trainer only has one runner on today’s card but his trips north have to be noted as he boasts an amazing 42% strike rate at Ayr from just 19 runners over the past 5 seasons. One of those successes came from Ayr Gold Cup winner Nahaarr in 2020 with Addeybb adding a Doonside Cup at the same meeting and his only runner this afternoon is the filly Pink Crystal in the Arran Scottish Sprint at 2.50, a race she finished second in 12 months ago.

Ben rode a landmark 1000th career winner on the John Berry trained Merrijig at Redcar on Tuesday and the jockey seems to have finally put his injury problems behind him after a tough couple of years. Curtis has a key ride on David Evans’ Radio Goo Goo on today’s card after 5 mounts here yesterday and he rode a winner at last week’s Doncaster St Leger meeting on the Clive Cox trained Double Jump.

Tom rode the Ayr Gold Cup winner Brando for trainer Kevin Ryan in 2016 and he rides Mon Na Slieve for the Ryan team in the Listed Harry Rosebery Stakes over 5 furlongs. The jockey teamed up with the stable for big-race success at Doncaster last week with Room Service in the £300,000 Sales Race for juveniles and continues to ride some key horses for the yard 7 years on from Brando’s big day at Ayr.

Connor partnered Gale Force Maya to win the Listed Arran Scottish Sprint on today’s card 12 months ago and the jockey’s back on board the mare today as they go for a repeat success. Trainer and jockey teamed up for a winner at Redcar on Tuesday before Connor travelled to Ayr for 5 rides yesterday and Dods has his usual big team primed for Friday and Saturday after declaring 5 horses on yesterday’s opening day card.
VIRGIN Bet Ladies Day features some quality races which have over the years produced some worthy winners. Here we pick out four horses who brightened up this day in years gone by.
Michael Dods’ mare travelled north from Darlington after winning another Listed race at York 12 days earlier and her win in the Listed Arran Stakes was a 13th career success from just 38 starts. Regular rider Connor Beasley got her home by three quarters of a length from Pink Crystal in a race where 18 fillies went to post. Gale Force Maya hasn’t managed to get her head in front in 7 outings since, but she’s run some fine races in defeat and was only beaten a length into third when trying to land a 4th course win at York in a Group 3 race won by Karl Burke’s Swingalong in July
Call Me Ginger missed last year’s Gold Cup meeting due to a clerical mix-up at trainer Jim Goldie’s yard in Uplawmoor but he’d made his mark by winning today’s Bronze Cup 12 months before, and has already had a rewarding autumn campaign under apprentice Amie Waugh. Paul Mulrennan was the man in the saddle for the sprinter’s Bronze Cup success though, the then 5-year-old chestnut winning by half a length from stablemate Be Proud under Waugh. Paul was winning his second Bronze Cup having previously been successful on Music Society for Tim Easterby in 2019
This year saw the very first running of today’s Listed Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies’ Stakes with 15 runners going to post over five and a half furlongs. Intense Romance was always up with the pace and led from halfway under Cal Rodriguez. Michael Dods’ filly had won her previous handicap at Haydock and after her short head success at Ayr, she went on to win the Listed Rous Stakes at Ascot the following month. Intense Romance didn’t add to her 9 career wins after that, but she’d proved a real money spinner for owner Hugh Malcolm Linsley
Jack Dexter won the Bronze Cup for Jim Goldie as a 3-year-old in 2012 with former Grand National winning jockey Graham Lee in the saddle. The soft ground loving Goldie sprinter won 10 races for the Uplawmoor yard with his Bronze Cup success coming in his first season racing when he scored 5 times in 11 starts. His 4-year-old season started with a Listed win at Doncaster and included a Group 3 success at Newcastle, but his first Gold Cup bid ended with a third to Highland Colori in 2013 and he finished unplaced behind Louis The Pious, Don’t Touch and Brando in each of the next 3 renewals.
He has won four times from 5f to 6f on ground varying from good to soft. Beaten 7l behind Mecca’s Angel at 20-1 when 9th of 19 on his latest outing in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York over 5f (good) last month. Drop back into handicaps should suit.

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.
Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.
Brando was the winner of the Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday, 17th September, 2016.

ELINOR DASHWOOD ran as well as expected when finishing fourth in a race full of progressive types at Chester earlier this month and may be able to regain the winning thread on her nursery debut. The twice-raced Lunar Streets also enters handicaps off what looks a workable mark and Ed Dunlop’s filly may give the selection most to think about, although Miss Roberts arrives in good heart.

In effect, it is an intermediate level; many of the runners in this five-furlong contest for two-year-olds will be using this race as a springboard to even better things. Initially weight is allocated according to sex, before penalties are given to horses that have previously won at this level or above. These penalties range from 3lb for a Listed success to 5lb for a Pattern race victory

A reproduction of either of those efforts would give the son of Aclaim a big chance. Three-year-olds will have to carry 9st and four-year-olds and above are burdened with 9st 2Ib before penalties are added according to the class of race a filly has won in the last six months - 3lb for a Listed race, 5lb for a Group 3 and 7lb for a victory in a Group 2 contest.

This race is a six-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

YORKSTONE took a little while to get on the scoresheet but he showed his appreciation for testing conditions when successful over 7f at Doncaster. The way he powered to the line suggested that he won’t have a problem with the extra furlong, and he can double up. Ayr regular Retirement Beckons must be considered closely, while Gracelands Girl produced a better effort at Thirsk on Monday.

Valley Of Flowers won this race last year from a 4lb lower mark and recent performances have proven that she can compete from her current mark. The five-year-old merits respect, as does Annandale, who struck the woodwork at Redcar last month, though a chance is taken on GLASSES UP. The son of English Channel was unable to land a blow at Musselburgh 23 days ago, but he is proven at a higher level and might be able to strike down in class.
