WE’RE READY, ARE YOU?

WE’RE READY, ARE YOU?
1.20pm - Volterra ran a very nice race at York last month when finishing 4th in a 7 furlong maiden The form of that race has since worked out well and the Kevin Ryan trained colt should come on again for that run. Individualism finished 2nd here at Ayr in a maiden in July on good to soft ground and probably just ran into a good one when beaten 5 lengths by Mortlake next time out at Leicester.
1.50pm - Sisyphean finished a neck behind Volterra (who runs in the opening race) at York when finishing 5th of 14 runners. It will be interesting to see how Volterra runs to get some clues on that line of form Sisyphean steps up to 1 mile here and should but in another bold performance under Tom Eaves. Tommy's Paradise is worth a market check on debut for Iain Jardine. Offer and Receive won first time of asking in a maiden at Hamilton but we still do not know how good that race actually was Sisyphean looks a solid choice and is slightly preferred.
2.25pm - American Affair goes up 3 lbs for his win last time out at Carlisle. He is drawn in stall 21 however which may not be ideal here. Preference is for Wee Fat Mac who is drawn in stall 8 for trainer Iain Jardine with Andrew Mullen taking the ride after a first time wind operation. Wee Fat Mac is now running off a mark of 62 but should be able to run a big race if keeping his recent good run of form. Aconcagua Mountain is due to go up 2 lbs and has been running some eye-catching races recently without getting his neck in front and he has form which ties in nicely with Wee Fat Mac
3.00pm - Mr Alan finished 2nd in this race last year but carries more weight this time around Austrian Theory takes a step up in trip for Charlie Johnston which makes him a very interesting selection. Marie's Diamond is now off a mark of 85 and could be dangerous here if he handles a step up in trip today.
3.35pm - Sophiesticate found things a little easier last time out in class 5 company She remains a danger here today off a mark of 69 Alpha Female is well in on the weights after her near miss at Kempton last week and was well supported in the market that day. It will be interesting to see if she lines up again here today but if she does, she is definitely worth a market check.
4.10pm - Ventura Rascal has not shown much in his previous 2 starts but goes down in the weights and could run a more competitive race now off a mark of 72 and getting tongue tied for the first time Tommy G won at the meeting last year and is tipped to go well here again now back at Ayr on better ground Shine on Brendan steps down in grade here and no surprise of he is involved at the business end of the race.
4.45pm - Jkr Cobbler is going for 4 wins on the bounce in handicaps for trainer Iain Jardine. The question is if the handicapper has caught up with him now running off a revised mark of 62 He still looked to have a bit in hand when crossing the line last time out and a chance is taken that he can make it 4 in a row at this track. Global Humor looks a danger for Jim Goldie Recent runs have not been the best but he has previously shown potential here at Ayr on better ground
5.17pm - Rory was a close 2nd last time out at Musselburgh. A mark of 66 is probably fair and he does hold solid place claims. Preference however is for Monhammer He has only 3 wins to his name but his last run at Musselburgh took the eye and is due to go up a further 1lb in the weights after this race
WELCOME to the opening day of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and what promises to be an excellent afternoon’s racing and an appetiser for the action that follows on Friday and Saturday.
I am delighted to welcome Virgin Bet as sponsors of the Festival for the third year and everyone at Ayr Racecourse is looking forward to working with such a prestigious brand once again.
Sponsors have never been as important to racing as they are now and we thank Virgin Bet for their support over the three days of what is Scotland’s biggest and richest Flat Racing Festival. Outside of the Ayr Gold Cup, Virgin Bet is increasing the ‘Best Turned Out’ award prize on all of their sponsored races across the festival, and as a unique further prize, all winning grooms will be entered into a draw to win an exclusive ‘voucher’ worth £1,000
Our thanks also go to today’s other sponsors - the European Breeders Fund, Western House, BrandingHub and Simply Asset Finance.
The feature race today is the Virgin Bet Best Odds Daily Kilkerran Handicap in which there is a quality field of 10 runners including this year’s Ebor placed and multiple winning Euchen Glen who has amassed over £550,000 in earnings over a stellar career Also in the field is Marie’s Diamond a former Group 3 winner at 2 and it’s sure to be a competitive renewal.
Notwithstanding the Kilkerran Cup we also have a couple of fabulous Novice races, and who knew at this time last year that when we witnessed Hi Royal win the 1m EBF Novice stakes that we were in effect also watching the future 2nd in the 2000 Guineas and subsequent 3rd in the Irish 2000 Guineas, keep your eyes peeled today
I’d like to thank the team at Ayr for their sterling work and dedication to ensure this Festival runs smoothly and is a great success.
There are eight races to savour today, and live entertainment follows the last race. I hope you all have an enjoyable and successful Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival.

Easterby’s father Peter trained 3 Ayr Gold Cup winners with Polly’s Brother, Able Albert and Final Shot between 1983 and 1990 and Tim has tasted success of his own in the Silver Cup with Golden Apollo and Staxton in the past 4 years. The trainer has had another good year with his Group-race sprinter Art Power and has NINE runners declared on today’s opening day card including Triple Jaye which won last year’s 2.25 and is all set to go again.

Leading Scottish handler Jim Goldie warmed up for the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup meeting by saddling winners at Perth and Musselburgh over the past few days and the trainer will have his usual strong team over the next 3 days at Ayr. Goldie and his team will be busy saddling 14 runners across today’s 8-race card, including yard favourite and Ebor Handicap 4th Euchen Glen and last year’s winner of the 4.10 race, Tommy G.

Charlie became the sole name on the Johnston Racing licence this year after dad Mark re-wrote the record books for the number of winners trained in Britain and the young trainer has already made his mark by logging up his first century at the very first attempt. Johnston senior never won the Ayr Gold Cup but the stable has had plenty of good sprinters over the years and it may now only be a matter of time Johnston has 5 runners today including Subjectivist’s half-brother Individualism at 1.20

Irvine-born Danny realised a lifetime ambition when he rode the winner of last year’s Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup on Summerghand and the jockey is having another terrific season. The retained rider for the ever-expanding ownership group Clipper Logistics, owned by Steve Parkin, is at the top of his game and has 5 rides today, including top-weight Star Shield in the 4.10

Joe has bounced back from serious injury to resume his position with Johnston Racing and ride his fair share of winners for the new man in charge at Kingsley Park, Charlie Johnston. The jockey partnered old ally Subjectivist into a gallant third in this year’s Ascot Gold Cup before the horse was finally retired due to injury A winner at Musselburgh on Sunday signalled that there was no sign of Joe retiring any time soon and the veteran pilot has 5 rides today including local hope The Caltonian at 4.45
16% SU CC ES S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS 57 WINS FROM 356 RIDES
The reigning champion jockey at Ayr is making a bold bid to retain his title and Mulrennan’s partnership with trainer Jim Goldie has been a feature of the Scottish racing scene for a few years now Paul has a full book of 8 rides today with Euchen Glen headlining 6 mounts for Jim Goldie in the Kilkerran Handicap at 3.00 The jockey’s other 2 rides are for Michael Dods for whom Northern Express is a possible Ayr Gold Cup partner on Saturday
Paul Mulrennan was the main mover in the Ayr Jockeys’ title race after our Tennent’s Racenight on Thursday August 17, with a second and a third for the reigning champion moving him to within a single point of the absent current pacesetter Joe Fanning. Hollie Doyle continued to keep her Ayr fans happy with a winner on Love Lies with Ollie Stammers riding a double on Wreck It Riley and Bohemian Breeze.
Jim Goldie pulled further clear in the defence of his Trainers’ title with a winner and a second boosting his tally to a magnificent 111 points for the season while Charlie Johnston drew level with Mike Smith in third thanks to Bohemian Breeze. There will still be 2 more racedays to come after the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival ends on Saturday night and there’s still a 3-way tie at the top of the Owners’ championship between Francesca Mitchell, James Callow & JS Goldie and Summerstorm Bloodstock so good luck to everyone over the next 3 days.

The opening day of the Virgin Ayr Gold Cup Festival has seen some stunning performances down the years these include…
Joanna Mason has made great strides as a professional since she left the amateur ranks to become an apprentice with her grandfather Mick Easterby, and last year’s Kilkerran Cup success on Yorkshire Lady has been one of her career highlights. Yorkshire Lady had won handicaps at Sandown and Haydock before finishing unplaced in a Listed race at Saint-Cloud and she’d been teed up for her trip to Scotland with a fine 4th in a fillies’ handicap at York. Two runs on the Knavesmire this year have failed to yield anything more than a 4th behind subsequent Ayr winner Kihavah but the grey’s rider has gone from strength to strength since coming back from a freak injury earlier this year
Keith Dalgleish retired from training this year, but he certainly left his mark on Ayr racecourse, winning the Kilkerran Cup 2 years ago with Sir Ian Good’s then 4 yearold Chichester under Cal Rodriguez. The pair turned the race into a procession as they romped home by six and a half lengths from stablemate Platinumcard who was no slouch himself Chichester won 3 more races for Dalgleish after Ayr - including a Listed race at York in June - and he’s now in the care of Charlie Johnston at Middleham.
Mick Channon has handed the training reins to son Jack this year, but the former England striker loved a winner at Ayr and landed the Kilkerran Cup 4 years ago with the well-backed favourite Certain Lad. Winning rider Ben Curtis had finished second on the 3-year-old at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting the week before and the jockey was back in the plate at Ayr as the horse held off Jim Goldie’s Nicholas T by a neck. Certain Lad was winning for the 5th time that day and the horse went on to win next time out at Meydan in January before landing a Group 3 success at York under Hollie Doyle in August 2020
Mark Johnston’s 3-year-old won the Kilkerran Cup under stable jockey Joe Fanning in 2014 and the tough-as-teak son of Soldier Of Fortune went on to add 9 more wins to his CV before being retired at the age of 10 in 2021. Fire Fighting won a total of 14 races from his 99 career starts with his successes gathered at an astonishing FOURTEEN different tracks including FIVE on the all-weather Racing TV presenter Fran Berry rode him to win a Listed race at Dundalk and current trainer Adrian Nicholls rode him to win twice.
He has won four times from 5f to 6f on ground varying from good to soft. Beaten 7l behind Mecca’s Angel at 20-1 when 9th of 19 on his latest outing in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York over 5f (good) last month. Drop back into handicaps should suit.

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.
Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

Jim Goldie is strongly represented, with his five runners headed by recent Carlisle winner American Affair and Sound Of Iona, who took a small step in the right direction at Hamilton. Ben Macdui didn’t get much luck in running at Beverley and commands plenty of respect, but the vote goes to last year’s runner-up REFUGE. The six-year-old won off this mark at Haydock in July and he wasn’t disgraced when fifth at Carlisle on his latest outing. Ski Angel, Sir Maxi and Borough complete the shortlist.

Little separated Dungar Glory and Golden Melody when third and fourth at Ripon, but ALPHA FEMALE shaped like her turn was imminent when runner-up at Kempton and Ed de Giles gets her out again before her revised mark comes into effect.

LITTLE TED: Following its run on 28/8/2023 it was reported that the horse suffered post-race heat stress.

TOBETSO did just what was required to get off the mark for his current yard in a similar contest at Ripon last month and, with Zak Wheatley more than cancelling out the 4lb higher mark with his claim, this is a good opportunity for the Declan Carroll-trained gelding to strike while the iron is still hot. Dark Desire is another with bags of scope for improvement, while previous winners of this race Tommy G and Ventura Rascal are also dangerous to rule out.

MONHAMMER travelled smoothly into contention before finding just one too strong at Musselburgh on Saturday. He is 1lb well-in today and ought to be more than capable of going one better, though Highfield Viking, who occupied the same position at Catterick last time, can provide a stern challenge. Rwenearlytheredad has been progressive this season and should be thereabouts despite a 3lb rise for his latest victory. Cassy O should not be underestimated either.
